I have a lovely dog and have been thinking of getting a cat as well. The dog is 4 years old and large. He is very friendly but I have never seen him with cats and do not know if it could work out. Do you think cats and dogs can be friends?

Oh yes! It is possible. My mother is one of those crazy catladys that people whisper about. You know the type... the ones with more than ten cats milling about their house. Anyway, at last count she had 17 felines and 2 canines. All of the cats love the dogs and even sleep with them. The dogs kind of heard them about which is kind of funny but never so much as nip them.

That is a lot of animals. It is good to know that they can live together. I will have to see if my dog will be happy with a cat. I hope a cat would also leave my chickens alone.

Neither do I but then this is the first time I have had free range chickens, I have always kept them in a shed or fenced in run before. Now I let them roam all over the garden and the dog ignores them unless I talk to them.

Hmmm... i have no experience with cats and chickens...but i suppose anything is possible. i know that cats get along well with other farm animals like horses, but i never heard anything about how they do with chickens.

Dogs and cats can definately be friends. I have five cats and one dog and have had a combination of cats and dogs throughout the years. At one time we had three dogs and five cats in the house and they all did fine with each other. The dog that I have now is about 9 months old and we only got him two months ago. He loves the cats but until recently none but one were very keen on welcoming him. However, many cats take about two months to adjust to a newcomer whether it be a dog or a cat. Cats are just naturally more suspicious than dogs. I would get the dog a kitten and introduce them. One thing you can do with your dog in the meantime until you get a kitten is to teach him a couple of commands. The most important one is the "leave it" command. Say the dog's name followed by "no" and then "leave it". This will help you out so that he doesn't chase the kitten all over the place and also be handy for him to know in other situations like when food is in his reach but you don't want him to have it. I'm sure you'll be successful if you just follow those steps.

Thanks for the help. I will definitely do that. I have taught him not to chase my chickens now so I will see if I can do this with a kitten as well. I would like them to be friends.

I have a friend of mine who is an animal lover.she had a dog and that dog is very possesive of her.It will not even let her children go and sit on her lap when its jealous it will nip the children. My friend always wanted to have cats too.I felt it may not work out.Now she has 3 cats at home and they get along very well with the dog. They even climb up and sleep on the dog.Its quite amazing the 3 cats and the dog are like one big family.Till i saw it I never thought they could get on together.

Thanks for that it is very interesting. My dog is quite jealous as well. He gets upset whenever I talk to the chickens. I let my chickens go free range while he was sick in hospital this year and when he came home I taught him not to chase them but I was surprised to discover that he got jealous if I talked to them. I never thought a dog would even care about them. So I wondered how he would go with another animal that would get affection.

It could work.It usually works if you have them interact when they are both still small. My friend had a bunch of dogs and one cat and the cat was the one that dominated over them and was mean to the dogs. But at the end of the day they would all cuddle together. I have noticed the bigger dogs are always the nicest though so I would try it with yours.

Yes, cats and dogs can get along together. Seeing as your dog is of some age in years now maybe you could 'borrow' a cat from a friend and introduce the cat to your dog to see if he gets along with other animals before going out and buying a cat of your own

Thanks I will see if I can find a way to introduce them and see if they get on ok together. He is a very friendly dog and does not seem to dislike cats. It is the cat I am not sure about as they can dislike dogs. Hopefully a kitten would learn to get on with him.

I have had lots of cats and dogs be friends. Not only have they been friends but some thought they were family. I have had kittens that thought dogs were their mother and try to nurse. As long as you get a young cat or kitten, everything should be fine. At first they will probably stay away from each other and the cat may hiss but eventually, not long they will get along and even play together. I have even had rabbits and cats together. One rabbit was in love with my cat and followed him everywhere. Welcome to myLot!

Bribery helps in animal relations - THe dog and cat get along best when there is food involved (especially ice cream bowls!)
I have one of each and they get on quite well. They are not exactly "buddies" or cuddle together, but they do not fight and respect eachother. In my case, I had the cat first and he was about 8 years old when we got the dog, who was 1 at the time. My cat had been around other dogs in the past, so he didn't freak out, which helped alot. Mostly, it depends on the personalities of the animals involved. Since your dog doesn't pay much attention to your friends cats, he would probably tolerate you getting a cat. I would recommend getting an older cat who has been around dogs, if you can. Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice. He has been scratched by cats before because they had a thing about dogs but I don't think he would chase them or anything like that. The problem would be his jealousy of another animal getting affection.

When i got my cat my dog was about 4 years old. My dog took it upon herself to raise my cat. So I do think that it is possible. If you dog interacts well with other animals and people I think that he/she would do fine with a cat as a companion. If you have a friend who has a kitten take your dog to see it and see how he/she responds to the cat. This may be the best way.

Thanks for the advice. He interacts so well with other animals. We take him over to a friends house where he plays with her dogs. She also has cats and he does not even seem to notice them. The cats are old and they seem to be scared of everyone.

They can. Our cats sleep with our dogs in the dog house. Its so cute to see them all curled up in a pile.

I had a dog and a cat that were best of friends. The cat would brush up against the dog and they would lay next to each other. Our other dog, on the other hand, liked to chase her and bark at her. So, I guess it depends on the dog. The one dog and the cat grew up together - we got them when they were baby's still. The other dog came along later.

Yes it probably depends on the cat and the dog. If they were brought up together from young I know they can be ok but I am not sure about older animals accepting others. In the past I have had cats and dogs but they were smaller and the cat was there first. I had two cats once. One did not like anyone and the other spent all his time outdoors where the dogs never went. I also have free range chickens and I am not sure about how they will go with cats, although a friend of mine has all three, cats, dogs and chickens and they all seem to ignore each other.
