I just talk to people. I think the best way to make a friend is by making them laugh. Laughter is the key to friendship. Everyone wants to be around someone who can make them laugh.

I guess the key to befriending strangers is to be pro-active and be the initiator of conversations. If you want to make friends, you need to be a bit "thick skin" to start that conversation. Normally what happens is that we have two parties who are shy and dare not approach each other; this situation will not spark a conversation at all and thus it would be highly unlikely that those two people can become friends. However, when you take the bold step to just initiate a conversation, you will see the other person responding a bit awkwardly at first but will start to open up and reveal more as he or she gets more and more confortable with the conversation. Of course, body language also plays an important role in conversations, because if people see you're nervous and sort of "being fake", they would be more likely to be reserved. All in all, like you said, be nice to the other person and always smile and be real as yourself.

I usually make the first move to talk because I know nothing happens if I won't initiate, but I am very choosy sometime when choosing people whom I can befriend with especially to a total stranger but there are situations like a new classmate in school, a new colleague, a new neighbor, talking does always work a mile when we start it. A very rare instant though, I hand a candy to one of my new classmate in high school, from there we become very close friends on !
