Macaroni cheese.....what can I add to it???

The other day I was making myself a jacket potato and was deciding what to have on top. I was debating whether to have beans and cheese but then I saw a tin of macaroni cheese so had that instead. It was nice but I felt it needed something else to add flavour. So if you were to 'spice' up macaroni cheese, what would you add to it???
What topping do you like with jacket potatoes??

I love macaroni cheese but it has to be home made! I love chopped tomatoe through it but unfortunately my daughter is allergic to tomato so I haven't has it that way for ages! As for the baked potato well that is easy - gotta be cheese and baked beans! xxx

Yes I love cheese and beans on a baked potato - I decided for a change to have macaroni cheese but I felt it needed something to add to it!! Its a shame that you cant use tomatoes but Im sure it tastes nice, I'll have to sample that and remind you of the taste!!

Food... my favourite subject! Well my best topping is beans and cottage cheese as it is really creamy hot and yummy. Never tried macaroni cheese, but I would probably add some onions and chopped olives. I also like sweetcorn and cheddar on a spud. You've made me hungry!

Hi Cinderella, If I have macaroni cheese I will also put a lot of black pepper over the top of it and also chop in some cherry tomatoes and maybe some onion if I have some. I hope you enjoyed. On a jacket potato I will usually have melted cheese and onion or melted cheese and ham and if I have them I will have with prawns in a marie rose sauce with lemon and pepper. Ellie :D

Onions might be good as it will add a crunch to it!! I may have to just add abit of everything in my cupboard, that might go well!!! ha ha Can you imagine if you added a tin/jar of everything in your cupboard, that would be an interesting combination!!! Thanks for sharing xx

Those tins of macaroni cheese are pants, they have no taste whatsoever. In the past I have made the mistake of buying them and when I cooked it and tasted it I thought "I am not eating that".
I have put tomato sauce in it before now, but have also added some extra cheese, nutmeg, and have even added some sausages to it! I just put whatever is in my cupboard into it!

Chopped green peppers, onions and garlic! They're good in that kind of cheese. So is cooked broccoli.
I top potatoes with plain yogurt or chili usually, but it depends on what I have on hand. Broccoli and cheese sauce, diced ham or bacon, leftover meat with or without gravy are favorites, too.

McCormick and Schilling spices and herbs has a nice blend of bell peppers and garlic that I like to use on a variety of foods to liven them up. I might add some of that and some tuna or chicken. How about some bits of broccoli or cauliflower for crunch? Add a couple drops of a good hot sauce and you give the macaroni and cheese a real punch.

Hmm, I really don't know what a "jacket potato" is, but it seems like a baked potato. I would suggest to put some bacon bits and some broccoli in the macaroni and cheese. Not only is it great, but now the "jacket potato" is a full meal lol!!!

I was actually talking about steamed broccoli. I don't eat raw broccoli much, but it is good with ranch dressing. Hey! Maybe you could put the ranch on top of the raw broccoli, bacon, and mac-n-cheese!!! This potato is getting better and better!!!

Sorry yes a jacket potato is the same as a baked potato. Adding bacon could be nice, Im not much of a vegetable person but adding broccoli does sound interesting and add some crunch!!
Thans for sharing!!

You can add tomato to mac and cheese or some bacon. Green onions are really good in it too.
As far as potato toppings- sour cream and butter maybe a little cheese.

A tin of macaroni cheese Cinders?!!! They are so bland that you have to add something to them. Sausages, bacon, vegetables almost anything that you might eat withy pasta you could eat with a TIN of macaroni cheese. The first thing that you should do is take a block of cheese, mature cheddar will do. Grate about half of it and add it to the macaroni cheese sauce. Now we have some taste, then add the rest of your ingredients.
I love chili wit my jacket potato or good old baked beans. I'm hungry again.
Did you really say a TIN of macaroni cheese. Cast aside these student habits and make some real food. LOL.

Boil some water and add macaroni to it. Grate a wodge of cheese. Melt a couple of knobs of butter in a saucepan and add a couple of tablespoons of flour stirring the whole time add milk and keep stirring until the goo resembles a thickish sauce. Add cheese and perhaps a little more milk to dilute the sauce some. Add salt and pepper if you wish. Drain off macaroni and add to saucepan. Mix together and pour onto a plate(s). Eat! Takes about as long as to find the tin. Open it. Pour it into a saucepan and heat. It does take one extra saucepan granted. But tastes a load better.
In my store cupboard we have:
Dried pasta - various
Red kidney beans
Baked beans
Chopped tomatoes
Fish soup
pasta sauces
icing sugar
vanilla pods
saffron
various dried herbs and spices
peanut butter - crunchy and smooth
1 bar plain chocolate for cooking. Bu won't be cos I'll eat it
Several Heath bars sent by generous American friend
Rice - several sorts
Mayonnaise
Corned beef
Bramble jelly
Flour - plan, SR, Bread, Wholewheat
Cous Cous
Tuna in cans
Dried butter beans
Food colourings
Dried dates
Salt and pepper
That's it I think. Now, what can you do with that lot!

Im no good at cooking and I prefer simple and easy meals that take less than 10 mins!! lol Its not student habits its from the Butlins days of only having a microwave to cook with until we sneaked in those George Foreman beasts which werent allowed!!!
I did add some cheese to it but it needed something to add a crunch to it. Im not into spicy food so chili is out of the question. I love baked beans and cheese on a jacket potato. What have you got in your cupboard apart from biscuit wrappers that I could experiment with??? lol
