Today my friends son came crying from school...he is 5 years old and in First Standard ...he said that he was very tired in the last period and dozed off to sleep in the class..his teacher woke him up and told him that he is a donkey and hit him on his palm with a wooden ruler and he was asked to stand on the chair the full period ..all children made fun of him and he said he will never go to school again...poor kid i feel very sorry for him the teacher was very rude...so far he was in kindergarten so school was only for 3 hours and now suddenly he goes at morning 7:00am and comes at 2:30 pm so it is a drastic change for the child ..i think the teacher should be more understanding and i think his mother should go and speak to the principal about this..this will also effect the child psychologically..what do you think? what should his mom do? is it right to have such long school hours for such small kids?

First i think she needs to go to the school and investigate why a teacher is allowed to hit her child with a wooden ruler. I could care less if she just hit him on the palm, what she did should not be tolerated. For the love of god, parents can't even spank their children anymore because of laws that have been passed. What gives a teacher the right to discipline a child by hitting???!!
Secondly, the teacher who is supposed to be an adult..resorted to name calling, what teacher does that??? Then making him stand on a chair for a whole period (which im imagining is about 30-45 min long). I think this sort of disciplinary action was uncalled for for him simply dozing off.

I'm glad to hear that she was verbally warned. Being a teacher is not a job for insensitive people, especially if you are going to work with small children. I hope she learned her lesson. Glad to here the little fella isn't going to drop out at such a young age as well, lol.

some times it is necessary for kids to be punished...espeically with the way kids act these days.
if my kids being unruley and disruptive, then bust his butt. i tell my babysitters and stuff not to ever let my kids walk all over them, because they will if they believe they will get away with it!

playmateshorty that child was not unruly he fell asleep, surely
you would not punish a child that young for falling asleep, kids
today do not act any different than they did a thousand years ago, its just made more public today. I do not think that beating up on kids does anything but make mean adults. its just a big enjoyable power trip for the big adult to hit the little kid. I think you are being a bit intolerant here. no teacher has the right to hit a child with a ruler, thats just being very mean.

I do not care what country you live in, no instructor, professor, or teacher has the right to hit a student or call a student names. You can sue the intructor for doing that to your child.

Hi nupats,
Yes, I think it is too long for five years old to be in school and what the teacher done is illegal, we do not tolerater that sort of thing in this country U.K. the teacher should be sack and if I were the child parents I would go to the school and have it out with them and report them to the law, that is child abouse.

Aw i think that teacher deffintly took things to far, and i would go over to the school and talk to the principal, i dont think a teacher should be allowed to hit a child or call them names and make the child feel bad in front of his class mates thats just wrong, i think that teachers should call the parents if there is a behavioral problem or the teacher should only be allowed to give a child a time out, i think punishment should be up to the parents to decide after the child gets home.

You should speak to the school about this, it's just not on at all. This kind of punishment is illegal in most countries, and a child should never be made to feel as though they don't want to go to school because they got punished. It's important for young children to be taught discipline, but not in this way, and i'm not surprised that he's tired, with him having to work such long hours at school.

Yes, mother should definitely take some action about this matter otherwose this can have a great effect on child's behaviour. What mother can do is either go to principal and make a mistake or go to teacher and have a direct talk so that this should not happen again..

I think the mother should defiantly say something, I know I would. Teachers should understand that the chilren aren't used to long days. If that would have went on in our school district the teacher would have been fired that day. Teachers do not have the right to use such discipline, if there was a problem the mother should have been contacted. The teacher should not have embarrassed the child, and disciplined him in thatmanner.

hi nupats that is just plain mean and so stupid. I was hit on the knuckles with a ruler in the first grade and it hurt so bad that I walked out of the school and went to my dads office, he was the small town doctor, and boy was he mad at that teacher, he took me back and he bawled that teacher out like crazy and she never ever touched me again. the mom should go to the principal as soon as she heard about it as that teacher is very cruel and should not be left to get away with that kind of treatment. specially in kindergarten. and no its not right to have such long hours for little kindergarteners.

Hi Nupats, children in your country start young - 5 years old, and they are in First Standard?
Ours start at 6-7 years old; even then, it takes sometime for the kids to get used to the long hours.
Teachers are not very understanding or tolerant of young kids - it's been happening for the past few decades. Poor kids, especially the younger kids dare not retaliate, so the teachers are heavy handed on them or take out their personal frustrations on them. So it's no wonder that the kids, when they grow bigger, they turn on the teachers, especially when they are in their teens, in high schools.
Sometimes it help, or may not, help talking to the principal. They could very well 'gang up' on the poor kid, branding him a complainer, and treat him worse. That's the reason why many parents kept quiet, and bear with the mean treatment of their kids. It's simply terrible! These teachers are the people in whom we place the education of our children!

hi dear the education system is harsh on children my son is 3and half years old and is in Kindergarten (Lower KG)..he is expected to to know all alphabets capital and small (recognition)..numbers one to twenty and then they are asked to do match the following which gets tough for small kids too much of pressure...his mom had gone and met the principal and told him that this is no way to treat a kid so small and that too just because he got tired by the last period and slept off...the teacher could have woken him up and told him to go and wash his face but this was very rude..kids are very sensitive and she called him donkey the kid was deeply hurt...the principal has given a warning to the teacher and told her that such a behavior can lead to her suspension in future..this should knock sense into the teacher and she will behave with children with more love and patience in future ....so now she will send her son to school on monday..thank you for sharing your views

My mom is a pre-school teacher but I have not heard that she does that to kids. Kids can find it very difficult to adjust to school especially in the first few months of school. They should never be humiliated and by a teacher, that is worse! Maybe you should tell your friend to go and see the principal or talk to the teacher. Is transferring to another school a better alternative?

It's very sad to see how there're still some teachers that think that the best way to teach children is this one...
I believe that the parents should step up for their kid and dont let this kind of behavior be punished as the teacher did, the best thing you can do is to tell the child not to sleep in class in a good way, not hit him/her!

Physical punishment in uk schools has been banned for over 20 years, yes, children need to be disciplined but resorting to calling children names by teachers as a form of discipline is unprofessional and cause for an official complaint about that that particular teacher and especially towards a child so young. I don't know the legalitys of punishment in schools where you are, it would be good to have some of these explained so i can comment further

Children trust their parents and then their teachers and if teachers start behaving in such a way the child will be demoralized. It is here that the parent should take a strong standing and make the child feel secure. Say that we are there for you. The child's mother should meet the teacher and the HM without any delay. She should be very careful when talking to the teacher and the HM because her child spends most of his time there. Be soft but firm that her child has not taken the punishment well mentally and his academics could suffer because of this.

Without a doubt she needs to say something to the head of the school. As for the length of the day, yes it is a big change on a little one. My son had the same sitatuoin, went for 3 hrs last school yr and t his yr goes from 8-3;10 however, after lunch for about 20 mins they have towels that they lie on the carpeted floor and can rest. The teacher told us the first day that for the first cpl weeks if they fall asleep she will let them sleep for a bit longer, prob an hour at the most, because its such a drastic change. Then after the few wks if they fall asleep she will wake them, because they dont want them mising out on the subjects covered in the afternoon. I feel for the little boy and cant blame him for not wanting to go back. She should talk to the school, maybe keep him home jsut for a few days til the school addresses it in the way it should be, and then maybe he can go into another class with a diff teacher.

I am a person who likes kids very much. It is very sad to know that there are some school teachers who punishes the children even for their small mistakes. It is not good for anyone to punish a child, especially a teacher. This kid is used to sit in class only for 3 hours and suddenly when the school hours changes, it will be very difficult for him to manage. Actually the teacher should understand it. Instead he made fun of him. We should never punish small children for their mistakes, even if the children go wrong, we should ask them the reason and make him/her differentiate the right and wrong thing. Instead if we punish them, he/she will feel bad and this in turn will badly affect their character formation. So the mother should go and talk to the teacher. It is not good to have long school hours for small kids. It will make them tired and lack of interest in going to school. What do you think? Is it right to punish kids?

I think if the child will have a problem in class (feeling tired, falling asleep, etc) and since the child is only in his first year your friend should change the school his in and change to an afternoon school as they have noon school for year 1 and 2 kids. this way the child will be well rested, able to learn and not be scolded for dozing off in the class room.

When i was in my elementary in the year 1995, i still remember how my school teacher punished me inside the school,it's because i am not listening to her or i am talking to my seatmate or i forget to bring what she said us to bring. She punished me sitting on the air, kneeled on the monggo seeds or salt. and then sometimes she hited me with her long stick. and i can say that it's not right, punishing children can affect them psychologically that can cause kids afriad to go to school and it can cause some of kids trauma.I suggest that school must do some measures about this kind of issue and not to punishing school children.

Oh my gosh, that teacher should be punished too. I remember my elementary math teacher who throws chalk and black board eraser to students who are not paying attention. Aww! Is that a proper way of disciplining a student? I am certain it's not! We look up to our teachers so they should be good role models to students.
