Young married women are particularly vulnerable. By custom they go to live in the house of their husband’s family following the wedding. The marriage is frequently arranged, often in response to advertisements in newspapers. Issues of status, caste and religion may come into the decision, but money is nevertheless central to the transactions between the families of the bride and groom....Marriage is more like a Financial transaction for those who expect to make easy and continuous money...i cannot understand why do people marry in families which keep a dowry demand? women are burnt alive for money. More than 6,000 dowry-related cases are registered on an average annually, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)..it is a pity that with so much of changes, modernization and women liberalization we have still not got rid of this evil..is the women a property of the in laws that they treat her so badly and even burn her to death and she quietly bears it..is this fair?..do you also have the dowry system in your part of the world? how should this evil be removed?

Law is getting strict
but when girl is burnt, there are so much investigation that some times truth is not revealed either by neglegency of dept or its covered with heavy bride
Just hope for best and i am sure Education and awareness can minimize it

hi dear thank you for responding...i really hope we are able to do something to control this evil...law is strict about this but unfortunately all action starts after the crime is committed and the girl burnt..i think it is also to some extent the girl and her parents fault they keep trying to keep the marriage on and not break it even if it is abusive..

This evil should be removed. In the city that we live in we hardly hear about dowry deaths but once when I was visiting a hospital burns ward I was surprised to see the number of newly married women admitted there. At first I thought that this happened only in remote places. But it is happening all over, even here.

I think if every girl decides to do something when there is a problem with her marriage there would be less problems later. She should either try to solve the problem in her own way or else end the marriage if she thinks nothing can be done. And when you know the family is just too greedy and not satisfied with what has already been given I think she should just walk out of the marriage.

These atrocities are up there with female circumcision. The whole concept of this is not only terrifying to imagine it is very, very real as you have pointed out. And it is beyond disgusting. The only way they can defeat actions like this is to overcome the corruption behind those that control these communities that are turning a blind eye to acting this way. It is disguised as "honour" being brought back to the family that has been spited; yet the act itself is beyond dishonourable. ANYONE that acts in this way needs to be brought to instant justice and jailed for a very, very long time. It needs to be shown to be far more dishonourable to carry out these actions than the perceived shame brought upon the family by unpaid dowries or supposed "wayward brides to be". People act this way then hide behind a deep wall of elders that spout off the need for the "old ways" to be followed. Start from the top down I say and show the same amount of mercy they have shown for these poor women.

It is so sad that women in some parts of the world are still considered as second class citizens... and some are not even considered as citizens at all... the practice of giving or demanding dowry should be abolished... even if it is based on culture... since it is so prone to abuse...
In the past... my country practiced the dowry system... but it was usually the groom who gave money or valuable items to the family of the bride... this will prove that he is capable of providing a good life to the bride... that was a good custom... but that is no longer being practiced in my country...

That is horrible! I wonder why loving parents continue to give their daughters this way?
We used to have dowry here way back a couple of hundred years ago. A woman wasn't considered marriageable to any sort of a decent breadwinner unless she had a dowry or at least a trousseau (troo-so) which consisted of linens, clothing, and other household necessities. She kept them in a "hope chest" in hopes of making a good marriage.
I can hardly believe such a practice that would marry a woman off to people who then killed her and kept her dowry. Aren't there legal papers both parties can sign to insure her life? That would keep evil people from killing her, maybe. Women need to speak up and refuse to participate, although I understand that changing customs takes much more than that.
