I'm VERY excited today. I got a call and was told I'm approved to adopt Murphy. He's a border collie - husky cross. 8 months old. I met him on tuesday to see what he was like and if we got along. I've been looking into getting a medium to large sized dog for the farm and finally found one i fell totally in love with this week. I get to pick him up tomorrow after work. I'll be home for 3 days with him so he gets used to his new home. Seeing the other dogs left behind makes me sad for them. Have you ever adopted a pet from the humane society?

Yes, I have. I think it's a great way to get a good family pet. They are already screened for odd and/or aggressive behaviors, and you are saving a pet that would otherwise possibly be euthanized. I love certain breeds, but most dog trainers will tell you that a mixed breed is generally more intelligent.

They told me after i had decided to take him that he's been at the spca for 3 months. The one here isnt "open" at set hours so people dont go to it very often for pets. I felt sad for some of the others there I wish i could take them all home.

I've never adopted one, but I've pondered in the past getting a dog and i planned on getting it from a humane society. i think it is great that you've decided to adopt the dog and give it a good home. i would probably be sad too leaving behind all the other dogs as well..don't ya wish you could just adopt them all, lol.

I was very sad that i had to leave the others behind. And the kitties too! He was very happy to come home with me. I am noticing now that he has a few bad habits (I've had him three days) developed there that will have to go...such as jumping up to get a treat...or wrappign the lead around one's legs and tripping them. I know the ladies at the shelter encouraged the treat thing but....He's going to be alot bigger than me and i dont want kids around to get hurt by that trick either.

Wow, a border collie - husky cross! You will have your hands full. That mix is going to be very energetic. We have a husky and he requires 6 miles a day, on lead only. I hope yours has move of the collie in him as that would make him easier to train. A husky does what he wants, when he wants and can never be of lead outside. We tend to get our pooches from rescue centers or the welfare programs for the breeds that we are interested in. Kai is a welfare pooch and he has calmed down nicely after 4 years. He has some health problems but we are dealing with them. He is good company and a great listener.

I'm hoping he can go with me while i ride horseback. My older dog (cocker spaniel - 17 yrs old) can no longer go with us as he cant keep up. The horses dont mind our dogs going for their walk or run with them while we ride. I love the name kai. The lady at the spca said I'd have to keep him tied up for the first few weeks and then try him off the leash while I'm home. I'm hoping he is ok off the tie as I'd feel bad having him tied all the time.

Hi saundyl, Murphy is beautiful! What a gorgous dog! I like his name! He looks like a Murphy! It's a cool name! Being that he's been called that for 8months you could do either. If you really have another name that you like you could try to give it to him and see but honestly, I like his name! He really is a beauty! I'm jealous! I think what your doing is just wonderful. I've gotten shelter pets before and when I went I left crying because I couldn't take them all home. I hate going to the shelters because I get so upset. I hate the fact that I can't take them all. It's just too sad, but the fact that you're at least taking Murphy should give you the best feeling that at least you're going to give him a great home and make him happy as I know he will make you! Enjoy him! Kiss him for me too!

I like the name Loki. I've been informed he cant stay murphy as we have a murphy already. it sounds similar enough to Murphy that I'm hoping it wont confuse him too much. I've very excited for 4:30 today! I'm sneaking out of work early to pick up a leash and collar for him before hand. I feel the same way about shelters.

Oh, he's gorgeous! I used to have a border collie and he was an amazing dog, his name was Pip. I loved him so much. And well done for adopting a dog too! Pip was adopted from an animal shelter too. He was tiny and skinny, and had been treated badly in the past so he didn't like men very much at first (except my dad) but he gradually came around to being around men. Good luck introducing Murphy to his new home!

I have adopted some small animals from the Humane Society. Most of my animal have come to me before they head there. One of my dog's was going to the shelter. My parents told the person not to bother. He already had a home. My friend is trying to get me to adopt a dog. I already have a adopted bird.

I don't have a pet but that is a wonderful thing you are doing. I love animals, I watched the Animal Planet station often. I am a fan of Animal Cops and they asked that you adopt a pet from the shelters instead of from these pet stores. The breeders really don't do justice to their dogs. Murphy is a fine looking dog it makes me want one too. I am sure Murphy will enjoy his new home. Congratulations.

I think it all depends on the breeder. Most Breeders wont sell to a pet store. You have to go to them. My parents breed cocker spaniels for 10 years and sold them. But we also had a variety of pets we adopted from the spca (always fixed before we got them spca policy) and we loved them all. Murphy (now Zeus) seems to be totally loving the freedom of being on a farm. He's pretty dirty & stinky today because he was rolling in things id never willingly roll in!
