Americans and their deep sense of pride for their roots..

Hello! Why do americans choose to insert the name of their ancestry in front of their nationality? Like for example Irish-American. If say, I had french grandparents, over here in ireland, we don't say 'french-irish'..it sounds silly. Just wondering:)

I honestly have no idea. I have heard this a lot before, but I've never done this. I guess that is partly because I'd have no idea where to begin... I think I'd be something like English-German-Irish-Native-some other thing here-American.
