Yes it is very weird, "they" say that it could be your brain while you are relaxing, thinking this relaxing is that of falling, so your brain tells your body to jerk in response, like "keep you limbs straight.. you are gonna fall"
Who knows, but hee hee I do not like them!

Yay, now I finally know what they are called... Thanks for sharing with us the term :)
Anyway, I don't experience those body jolts that often that's why when it happens to me, I kind of enjoy the feeling...haha, I know, weird right? But yeah, I do enjoy it. I don't know why...and I laugh at myself because having a "jolt" or "jerking action" looks weird and funny.

I get those quite often. It's like you are falling and then BAM you wake up just as you would have hit ground.
Definitely a pain in the butt cuz afterwards, it's hard to go back to sleep.

Finally a name to the beast that has plagued me since I was about six or seven or so. It seems to me that I get this sensation of falling almost and then I have a hypnic jerk and sometimes they actually scare me senseless... I find they happen when I am really really tired and my body is just exhausted but I often wonder why they happen?

Hi Sinfulsweet,
Yes I have read that these most often happen when a person is extremely tired, from what I have read there is really no "Scientifc" explanation for these, but they are common. Yes, and very scary at times, I hate them!
Thanks for the response, as I find out more info, I will post! :)
