I've been doing this everytime I cook! I think it becomes a habbit for me! I saw Rachel Ray do it in her show and she will say "salt on my shoulder for luck"! How about you do you throw a pinch of salt on shoulder when you are cooking? Or do you know somebody do the same?

Hi maxilimian! I'm not sure if Ms Ray is just kidding, buy maybe yes and she got me there, lol. It wont make your shoulder dirty because it's just a pinch, but it can make it look like a dandruff, lol. I've heard when you give someone a wallet/purse as gift and you put coin inside, it'll give some luck! I have given someone before, but I'm not sure what happen! Thanks.

I never knew that supertitious belief.I will definitely make it a habit from now on everytime I cook. I guess nothing is wrong with sprinkling a little amount of salt on my shoulder when cooking.Who knows it may really bring me luck after all. Thanks for sharing us that belief cjay.

Hi CJay. No, I only throw salt on my shoulder when I drop salt in the kitchen or in the table because it cut the bad luck LOL. Here we believe that drop salt is bad luck so we need to throw salt on our shoulders to cut this bad luck.
Have a nice sunday.

This is a new thing for me. We do not do it here. Nope, not even my mom. I think its a customary to many places like yours. I don't remember anything like that, which we do before cooking.
So, do you do it everyday?

Such habit is unknown in my land but I did it sometimes just for the fun but I don't believe in these things if they were true then i would have needed salt blocks in some cases to have luck And when i cook I don't need salt cause it always happen that i have small cuts or little scractches and the tomatoe juice on those zones are enough if you ask me.
And I admit I love Rachel Ray's show she is so original and funny also learnt some tricks there hehe.

I have heard a variation of this superstition where if you were to tip over a salt shaker, to thwart bad luck, you would throw salt over your left shoulder. I have never heard of doing it while cooking.

Sometimes I do if it is a really noticable salt spill but sometimes I don't remember to do it. When my wife and I are cooking in the kitchen together we will do it out loud and kind of laugh at each other about it. But if I threw too much behind my shoulder she would probably yell at me for making a mess on the floor.

I never knew it until this moment. Hehehe I love to cook and I would like to try it. I need more luck than anybody could have right now. I'll try it once I cook today. I never knew that it's good luck. So, that's why I saw Rachel Ray do it too but it didn't caught my attention. This is fun and I would like to try it for luck! :)

I have never heard of that! That is crazy. And messy. I'm not one of those people who believes in luck and religion or anything like that so I'm not going to start that.
If I mess up my cooking, it is not because there wasn't salt on my shoulder.

I have always heard if you spill it then throw some over your shoulder for luck, but maybe I will try it to see if my luck gets better. God knows we can use all the luck we can get now adays. As for luck I believe we make our own luck. Will let you know how much luck I get with doing this. You said you been doing it has your luck changed?

my wife is the one who cooks and i dont see her throwing salt at her shoulders. for us we believe that salts are sacred so we dont like to scatter and step on the salts so maybe thats the reason why i dont see her throwing salt at her shoulders. i respect others belief like Rachel Ray but that doesnt mean that i need to imitate it too. if my wife one day does that then i will still respect her

before we had our dogs, my mom and i usually throw a pinch of salt over our shoulders. but now that we have dogs, they kept on licking the floor. to be honest, i am afraid that the salt may cause kidney failure or renal failure for our dogs. so we stopped all together.

well it seems that there are different views on this I always thought that if you spilt salt to throw a pinch of salt over your left shoulder to either continue your good luck or keep away bad spirits
