Do you like to upgrade?

When it comes to seats on the plane or hotel suites, most of us would be thrilled to be offered an upgrade. I'm talking about the free upgrades here. But why is it that when my computer tells me that there are new updates available for download, I'm not really thrilled? I don't mind the time it takes to update and upgrade my current software because I'll be online doing something else anyway. But I always find myself baffled with a new layout or new functions. The old version seemed fine so I don't see the point of trying to come up with versions 2,3,4,5 all the time.
So tell me, am I the only person who hates these techy upgrades?

What you said does make sense. but say for e.g its the case with MS IE or Mozilla FF. The new upgrade will be something more sophisticated and more than that, some of the bugs in the previous versions would have been fixed. Say something as important as a security fix.
Some software like that, I would definitely go for an upgrade. But say something like word 2007 over word 2003 is what i might not prefer unless forced upon me. We are so comfortable that anyone will resist a change.
one thing i would definitely update other than the browsers are my Anti-Virus software. I guess you also will do that. :)
Happy posting friend..

Hey thanks so much for sharing that bit on upgrading for bugs in Firefox. I hate upgrading my firefox because it doesn't seem to make a difference for me. But now that I've read your response, I'll be sure to say yes all the time in the future. I do upgrade my MS Word all the time though! I like the new features. When I saw the graphs and graphics I fell head over heels in love! but MS World 2007 is quite complicated sometimes I don't know where the function buttons are!

Hi mimico,
I ignore updates or upgrades for my PC cause it usually affects my internet connection making it slower than usual. Sometimes to me, the upgrades to me means yes you get upgraded software than normal but then it takes up most of your pc's memory that it just affects everything. I guess again it depends on the speed of internet connection you have or the amount of free space you have in your PC.
When you are just comfortable with the old version you have been using for awhile, then there is no need to upgrade. Unless if you are bored with the older version, then upgrading them would be interesting.
Happy mylotting!

Hey rina312! I apologize for getting back to you really late but I was really in a dry spell these past couple of weeks. Today, I feel energized and ready to conquer the world! Anyway, I'm glad we feel the same way about upgrading or system. But you know how sometimes the upgrade icon pops up and you just have the urge to say yes?! It always happens to me and before I know it, I'm already upgrading. :(

I'm so sorry for coming in so late. Same with me also, I usually avoid to upgrade until it becomes absolutely necessary, as it eats up precious time I have.

I ignore using updates because the XP what I use these not genuine for not genuine software's the Microsoft will damage by using automatic updates by sending all the updates to the system it causes the system slow and to format the system again and again for this better to keep automatic updates off and use the software.

I ignore updates for applications that i've been using but i do system update for windows xp.
It's annoying if your in the middle of something then a pop up appear saying new update is available. Plus the fact that it will eat up bandwith and system resource that's why I ignore it.

Yeah I agree. I can't forget how many times I'm forced to update iTunes or some game server just so I can have a measly new interface or skin or model. It doesn't seem like upgrading a bad thing but I just feel like if I was to upgrade at a cost why, why not wait until they re-release it for free. Although when all of the updates are free it's still annoying, because if some other browser or whatever is released, all that downloading goes down the tubes.

Oh I was just asked to upgrade my iTunes today. It took forever, let me tell you!!! The Apple upgrades always take such a long time. I don't know if it's because thye're more thorough or what. I even decided against the upgrade knowing they'll ask me again another time. But I wasn't doing anything anyway on the computer. i was just downloading a couple of tv shows so I just said yes.. Although i'd really like to know the details of the upgrade! I wish they'd tell us about it before telling us that a new version of the software if available...

Updating is different to upgrading. An upgrade means getting something more - a better service, extra facilities and so on. An update just means that your software (or, I suppose, flight or holiday) is more relevant to the moment.
It's in your best interests, usually, to routinely update Windows and Antivirus and other security software when updates become available. Sometimes some of these companies sneakily offer an upgrade at the same time (but not for free). I generally consider them and conclude that there is no significant advantage to me at the moment.
Sometimes it is annoying when they change the interface drastically, I agree, but usually I'm aware of the functions available and it only takes a little while to find things in the new version. More often than not there is a logic behind the changes and things work better.

I am always skeptical about upgrades especially if it is the operating system. If it is only an utility program, I am likely to go for the upgrade if it is free. One such good program would be anti-virus, unfortunately, such upgrades never come free. lol.

I usually try and apply the additional upgrades if and when I am told they are available. Usually these software upgrades and patches come about because of reported issues or problems, and the manufacturer offers these upgrades to plug problems, limitations or loopholes discovered, or maybe to improve some existing features. Of course, not all upgrades are useful especially if we don't use the features which are being addressed by the upgrades but often we don't know what has been changed in the newer versions, and so trade-offs have to be made as to whether to effect the upgrades or ignore them. Given the uncertainties, if diskspace is not an issue, I'll just upgrade each software to the latest possible.

You're not the only one who hate computer upgrades. I think it has to do with the fact that once you clck that upgrade button, you have to wait until it loads, and then sometimes you have to restart your computer just when YOU DON'T want it...that is the part that vexes me everytime lol

The problem is that someone has sat on a computer and been paid a lot of money to develop the orginal program. But then it is done so how are they going to justify their high salary and keep their job. They design upgrades and it does not matter if they make the program better or worse as long as they look different so you can tell the punters it is better

I think everyone loves upgrades and if it comes for free, it is all the more better. I have once got an upgradation in my train tickets and it was amazing. I mean when these things are for free then it feels great to me. I would always love to get these upgradations

Oh, i am with you. I hate it when these updates just came out of nowhere and asking you if you want to upgrade. I have a very old computer and would freeze up when i open another browser. Imagine yourself enjoying your photoshop practice, and then, oopps! You get an offer of upgrading or updating your browser. Why can't they just mail us? And or let us choose when they could come back, now? in 2hours? the next day? or never. I would be glad to say never. LOL java update always makes my computer hang a lot. Geez, im getting tired with all these new programs when the present is just good for me.

I like the upgrades of all software except from Micro$0fT.. they allways offer an upgrade to make others programs work worst.. so, I upgrade my antivirus, my messengers software, my file manager and my downloaders and firewalls, but never the OS.. I don't know why they do this, but I think that they will always will try to get private information from us to "improve" their OS..

I do not mind the Windows Update but when I am offered a new update for my software, I will wait for a while so that I get version four rather than version 3.1, 3.2, 3.3. etc. all the time. By that time, the upgrade is stable. If it is a hard ware upgrade I am doubly cautious as it makes it hard for me as sometimes it works havoc on something else on the computer. I find that with software, sometimes they are updating every day or once a week, so why do it then when you can wait a few weeks and get one with everything fixed?

Except the anti-virus software, I don't upgrade others.
I am very lazy to know the new functions of the software!

When you get a free upgrade at a hotel or on an airplane, you better yourself. However, when you get a free upgrade to your computer, you know it's gonna be nothing but headaches & heartaches & a minimum of 5 days of fixing problems. But then again, what do you expect for free??? I tell myself that EVERY time I see an update. I can't afford to pay for the upgrade so I have to remind myself that free even with problems is the right price.

Hi mimico! If it is operating system update, I'm willing to do that coz it can protect your system. Well, if it is application upgrade and upgrade too often, I feel really annoyed!! Basically, you can tell nothing different after upgrade...Maybe we are too lazy? lol

If it's an application I trust then I will allow the upgrade however if it says Microsoft I usually don't. (Microsoft is constantly trying to upgrade my system with things I don't want, and sometimes I have to strip them out later.) Although I was glad when I didn't upgrade to Firefox 3 when it first came out as there were a lot of problems with it. I assume they are fixed now.
