Yes, it will enhance your speaking skills most probably. But is it really good to engage yourself in debates and arguments all the time?
What are some of its pros and cons as you have experienced? Above all, is it healthy to do so? Why or why not?

It depends on the person with whom you are getting into a debate with. If they like to respect other person's point of view, then it would sure be a healthy discussion and a beautiful exchange of ideas. But i the person is a stubborn one, then they would make sure that it ends up name calling and fights {sometimes}.
Debating is a good form of increasing one's language and communication skills. If done with zeal, then it can surely lead to a better person with more knowledge after the discussion.

Debates are one thing, as long as they are fair, and everyon has the chance to speak equally. Arguments, on the other hand, till easily turn into fights, resulting in a lot of screaming and hurt feelings. Good debates should occur on a regular basis, but arguments should be avoided.

I love debating but have found that you have to be careful who you are debating with. I have a few people who I debate different topics regularly. We all pretty thick skin and each understand that we are not arguing.
I did just recently have a discussion with someone and realized that they were very offended that i questioned their position. Some people really take things to heart.
