Not for a long time actually caribe. The last time I took the train was when I had to travel back from the city to our home and at the time our son was only 6 months old. Sister and her boyfriend (now her husband) were down south for a visit so we went to the city to pick up another sister for the weekend. However on the way to sister's place, b-i-l hit a tree and did lots of damage to car. To cut story short, this meant I had to return home by train the following day. Up early to catch train into city at 6.00 a.m. before getting the train back to the country at 9.00 a.m. What should have been a 4 hour trip actually took 10 hours, because first the train hit a cow, so delay while that sorted out, then it hit a horse, which meant more delays. Then it hit a car, which meant we were stopped for ages while Police took statements, new train driver came etc. To make matters worse had only planned to be in the city long enough to collect sister and then return home. Max 10 hour trip and we should have been home by 10.00 p.m. at the very latest but instead arrived home at 5.30 p.m. with one very whingy baby, no clean nappies etc.
That was not much fun at all, and I have never taken a train since that day. LOL
Yes right, ended up getting back home

My Father worked on the railroad so I was brought up riding cargo trains. When I was an infant my parents lived in a boxcar that had been renovated into a house. Cool eh? We have pictures and inside it looks like a regular house.
I use to ride a passenger train every summer to visit with relatives and I loved the experience, it was a lot of fun and very interesting. It was more fun trying to walk from car to car than doing anything else. I always sat in the restroom when we would go over a long trussel, these were a little scary and always very long. The Amtraks go 120 -160 miles an hour so it was fast and fun.

You rode every summer? That sounds like fun. I rode a train a few times as a young child and I always enjoyed it. I guess a boxcare being renovated into a house would be something similar to a mobile home, only much more sturdy. I don't think I have ever seen one used for a house. I have never ridden on Amtrak, but always wanted to. There is a train ride up through Canada, I believe, that I always wanted to ride on because I saw some of the scenery from such a ride. It was beautiful.

I really enjoyed it as a child. Airplanes are more fun because you get to your destination so much quicker. I really don't like small planes. I rode in a four seater one time and didn't like the feeling of almost nothing under my feet. On the other hand, a big jet doesn't feel that way to me and I really don't mind flying on them at all.

yes, i did, quite a few times. it felt great and couldnot sleep the whole night gazing at the beautiful smoky (the window panes were foggy)outside. i could feel the hills, the red sandy subways and the ranches. i was transported to a different world altogether, no worries, no fear, so cool and unblemished.
those were the days my friend....

I have had the pleasure to ride Amtrak a couple of times in my life. It was actually quite an experience, and something I would Love to do again if I ever have the time. I have had the priveledge to travel from Illinios to Oregon and then Washington to Illinois, etc a couple of times. It was a Fun adventure, and you can meet a lot of wonderful people doing this as well.

I have had the pleasure to Ride Amtrak a few times in my life from like IL to WA state and what a pleasure it has been. I have even taken it from Seattle to Portland once as well. When you ride a Train long distances it gives you an adventure to be able to see a lot of the coutryside that you cannot see elsewhere. You also get a chance to meet a lot of New people and can create Friendships that could last a lifetime if you let it. For me I would Love to be able to do it again but never have enough time to consider it due to Lack of Time.

It really depends on the journey itself. I have used trains most of my life and must have spent countless hours travelling this way.
I travelled to and from work by train for just over 10 years, so it is easy to get bored with the experience undrr those circumstances. Nevertheless, I have enjoyed some good train journeys in countries such as Holland and Spain.
I would love to travel on the Trans Siberian railway, but unfortunately it is a 7 day journey so I would no doubt get bored well before the journey ended.

It is a long time since I have been on a train, other than on a historical steam train ride we went on last year. When I left home to join the military about 35 or so years ago, I took the train then as we all did. Went on tranfer interstate that year, again by train and then home on leave also by train. Then I got my own car to where I was stationed, and that was better.
Cannot say much good travelling anywhere by train. They are not much fun at all, and now I doubt that I would get onto one unless it was luxury all the way. My partner and I did consider taking the Ghan from Adelaide up to Darwin (Australia) but then she saw the price, and we didn't go. I thought we had not missed out on much by not going on it.

I have been on a train a few times, not that exciting. SOrt of like a car, but you can walk around. Way slower then flying and more expensive.
I think it is an alternative to people who are scared to fly, but when it comes to transportation, I must admit, I don't think of it.

I have ridden trains a lot here in the UK - the only train rides I have ever been on in the USA were when I moved from Pennsylvania to Illinois. I rode the train from Pittsburgh to Chicago - it was at night for the most part and it was uncomfortable, cold and drafty. Once in Chicago I had to change trains for one to Springfield, Illinois. I said then never again and I haven't been on a train in the USA since. Here in the UK I have made quite a few trips on the train and when I was growing up here train rides were frequent for me. I must say that in the years I have been away the trains have lost their comfort and they are getting expensive.
