does it bother you when workers at a store are less than enthusiastic to help?

Today I went to a paint store because I knew it was the place where paint was bought for our house. I wanted to get some paint to match our outside so I could freshen it up with a coat. So I tried to see if they could look up the original color from the builder/painter that did our house since we bought it from another and was not left with any info. Even though they were not busy, the two workers obviously did not want to even try to do this for me. I gave them everything I had and they fussed a little on the computer and said they could not find it. So they didn't offer any other ideas or assistance so I grabbed some color samples and left and got the standard "thanks for coming in" which made me laugh. I could not match anything from the samples so I decided since they were not very nice that I would just buy it elsewhere. Since I can't match it I might as well buy elsewhere. The next place I went had a person who was glad to get my business so they got it for the paint and supplies and if I ever need more I will go there.
Would you stop going to a place because you did not get the customer service you deserve?

They would definitely lose a customer. There are plenty of competitors who could use my business. I would make sure, though, to let them know why I wouldn't be back there, so there would be no doubt that their employees were losing business for them.
Too many people are desperately seeking jobs in this dreadful economy. They can hire people who know how to deal with the clientele and are very willing to do so. There isn't a bargain good enough to make me put up with less than the best service!

I guess I was too nice to say anything and one of the people helping me was the manager so he obviously wasn't setting a good example. We all have bad days, but even when I had one and worked in customer service if someone asked me how I was doing, I would say "fabulous" or something because they really didn't care that my dishwasher broke last night and leaked all over or whatever right?

It may sound like you're being phoney, but I found it helpful when I dealt with the public to "fake it till you make it". It's important to present a happy, interested face to the customers. I found that, before long, I really did feel happy and enthusiastic. It just came naturally.
If it's a manager who turns of the customer, then his or her supervisor should know about the bad example that drove you to a competitor. We get excellent service if we demand it!

I agree, I hear of so many people looking for jobs that they should appreciate it more.

No, I don't let one or two people influence me about going to a store. If they were that bad, chances are they won't last very long. If my service was very bad I might call a manager and complain. How will management know there is a problem if people don't tell them and just stop going?
I also probably would have just gone and tried to match the color myself or tried that in the first place before I asked for help.
I don't like people over eager to help me, if I want help, I'll go find it.

I guess, but unfortunately this was the management so I guess if they don't set a good example, the other employees will do the same. I had gone very out of my way to go to that store too. On the other side, I don't want "fake" enthusiasm, just more courtesy, no one even asked if they could help me I just had to stand at the desk until they decided they couldn't avoid me.

That is bad. If it's a major chain, they probably have a web site you can complain to. My daughter complained about service at a restrant once and they sent her coupons for free food. She went back.

I don't mind people eager to help but if I say I don't need help, I don't want them to follow me around.

I'm with you. I can't be bothered giving my business, essencially my money, to people who can't be willing to help. I went into a store that sells fabric and patterns looking to make something for my daughter. The salesperson had no interesst in stopping her conversation with her co-worker to help the woman ahead of me, or me. I left and went to a different store and the not only found me a nicer pattern and better quality fabric, but they were well informed on sewing and gave great tips. I've gone there ever since.

Your story had a great ending but how rude of someone to be more interested in a conversation than doing their job. They were probably complaining to the other person about their job!

If I want to buy something in store and I don't have any info about the product. I will ask question and find the info from the workers / shopkeeper. But if the workers doesn't give me attention and answer my question with details. I think I will get upset and won't go again to that shop.
I as customer need a good service so I can know the product and buy it. But with that kind of attitude from the workers, I think i'm very bother with it.

I agree, but there wasn't much communication, at least verbal. I could just tell by body language and facial expressions which spoke louder than words.

Absolutely. I always find myself tsk-tsking people when they have horrible customer service skills (or rather lack of. I've worked in customer service for several years and I always tried to maintain a sunny disposition, give my full attention and try my hardest to help the customer find what they needed and if I was unable to then I'd find someone who could. If our store didn't have what they needed then I always told them of other places that would definitely have what they were looking for. They always appreciated my help and even if they couldn't find what they were looking, they would usually walk away with a smile nonetheless.
It's frustrating when a place of business doesn't have proper customer service or their workers are just too lazy to try their best to help customers. I knew everyday going into work that people were coming in, spending their money and if they needed help I was more than glad to offer it. I enjoyed it. It makes you feel good when customers appreciate the hard work you put forth. I just wish other people working in customer service could have the same views on it that I do.

Sounds like you would be good at customer service. I know it's not for everyone, so if you don't like people, do a job where you don't have to interact with them right? We do all have bad days but this was just laziness from what I saw. I gave my $200 to someone else because they didn't seem to need it.

Definitely yes.. even if the product is good if the people who work there are not polite or helpful then what's the point in having such a big shop ???
I need some love and respect and concern from the workers who work in the shop and its their duty to respond and help the customrers with love, just by not being helpful i bet you the management will be poor and the company will come down in its growth

Yes it does make me mad when this happends. I was at walmart the other day and I had asked a lady that worked in the ladys department what the price was on this shirt, because there was on tag on it. She just looked at me and said that she did not know. She did not even offer to try to fine out the price. I was mad and put the shirt back and left the store.

That was so lazy of her to do. You would think she would at least have made an effort to look or advise you to go to customer service and try to get a good deal on it if there wasn't another. I would have dropped the item on the floor so she would have had to pick it up.

Sure it does but not all that much since I am usually able to look for things myself.
Let me share an example that happened just today.
I was at this shopping complex that is owned by a particular race of people. The whole place "belongs" to this race. It is a gigantic place and you can see that all the counters are manned by people of this race.
FYI, my country is a multi-racial society. This race above is a minority race. I may be the majority race in the country but I feel out of place there. I might have been overly sensitive but I feel they look at me (because of my race) differently. I may be wrong but I don't think they are treated any special elsewhere in my country (we do try to treat all races equal).
Back to the example, I was this security guy for directions. I wanted to know where a certain item was kept. There was another guy (his race) who was talking to him but he had concluded and walked off - that was when I asked. That other customer turned back to ask something else but it was already "my turn" so to speak. I can certainly agree that there is nothing wrong for the customer to continue asking. But the thing is, I asked my question, I was standing so close to them but they both treat me as transparent.
That security guard simply ignored me. Only after they finished chatting part 2 (it was quite some time and I was standing there fuming) did he turned to me, utter an insincere apology (yes, with a fake smile) and try to address my question.
If I judge his "technique" while responding to me alone, I would say he has great customer service. But my gut feeling tells me he faked the whole thing. By being polite and all, he leaves me no ground for complaint (not that I would bother). He thinks he cannot be faulted yet his callous manner in brushing me aside following to the demeanor is a telltale sign. My gut instinct is just that.
He was not the only one. I met a few other staffs in the complex and they all showed me tardy service. They ignored me, a customer, while happily chatting with their colleagues. Even at the last stop when I was paying for my items, I was standing there (no one was before me) but I was ignored while the cashier turned to talk to a staff who walked over.
The rude part is that I could have been politely asked to wait. Both the examples above, the person could have turned to me and said a polite "please hang on" and I would feel much better. So all in all, service wise, I don't like the place.
Customer service talks about the heart. It needs sincerity, not fake gestures.

It is hard to say, you can usually tell when people are being sincere. I was wondering if they would have treated me differently if I was a cute young college girl.

I have so been in your situation! I really like certain stores and the people who run it! I used to get the lotto tickets for the company lotto at a certain store but then I stopped at another place and they where happier to serve me. They actually gave me back my old tickets after they scanned them for winners! The other place would simply toss them and say 'no winners'. I will actaully take time to share my experience with a manager if I find someone who did a good job. It makes everone's day go well.

The thing is, it is what the owners want too! An environment where customers are happy and are commenting about good things! If we want our favorite store to get better all we have to do is make a positive comment to a person in power! It will trigger an endless cycle will will only bring us even better service next time!

I think everyone loves a compliment and loves to hear they are doing a better job than a competitor. It's a little thing they did, but look what a difference it makes to you. I would want my tickets back too.

Bad customer help: Walmart, Canadian Tire, Zellers, Future Shop. If I manage to find a person, they have no idea what to do. Example: I went with my daughter to Future Shop so she could buy a camera. We knew what we wanted but as always, it was sold out. Discount for the display model? NO! So we choose another one. 30 minutes later he said they have none. Discount for display model? Yes. Then he tried to sell us a memory card that was incapable. Good thing I know more than all Future Shop employees combined, I picked the right one. This happens all the time, employees that know nothing.

I would definitely not go back to the place that doesn't have any initiative to help customers. If I were in your place, I have reported the workers to their manager or supervisor. It's their job to assist their clients so they really have to make an effort to make cutomers happy and satisfied. =)

It was sad that the manager was the one who at least made an attempt to look it up but it was definitely like I was bothering him and he had more important things to do. He didn't even show his other employee how to do it - could have been a good learning experience for him.

Some times the right training is not offered to employees so its not fair to say its all their fault... I would say its partly managements fault for letting them go out on their own. I hate horrible customer service... but to me it looks like everywhere I go people are less willing to give me what I want. I mean I understand that the economy is bad and a lot of people are just there to shop around... but when a paying customer comes in... snap to it people =.= I get crap going through the drive throughs now a days... I just like to find and do things myself, leave your crappy associated at home. I'll lug my sofa over the self checkout scanner! lol

Yes I agree with you but maybe they just got chewed out by their managers.
Some of those managers are drill sergents...so although its not professonal
I give them a little slack and fine it myself.
Or they could be rookies and are just hoping you dont ask them anything because
they just dont have the answer and dont want to look stupid
.

That is true. I have learned from my experience that it is better just to say you dont know rather than try to cover it up so you don't look stupd and I can respect someone saying, I'm new or I have never been asked that, let me see if so and so can help us both learn about how to do it.

I really hate that. It really bothers me because when ever I am doing a job I always try so hard to help people and to see people not try at all just drives me nuts. What ever happened to having pride in your work? There is also a local small grocery store by me and the last 4 times I have gone there I have not gotten a hello or a thank you or anything from the cashiers. This really is starting to bother me. I can let it go a couple of times, but it seems that they just don't think it is important to thank customers. I'm thinking I should call the store manager and say something about this lack of respect towards customers.

You a hit the nail on the head - it's all about pride in your work. I have had some not-so-glamarous jobs but I always had pride. If I was cleaning a house I did it as good or better than I would do my own, not just what I had to do to get by.

yeah, it really bothers me when the store I went to have a very bad customer service. I mean, it's one of the important factor that the store have, they are there to help the customer with their needs and questions. When I happen to go to a store like that, I wouldn't bother to go there again. I'll just look for another store that will have a good service, even if it's too far.

I definitely get pissed off every time I go to a store and I don't get the right service. I have encountered that situation many times. There were many times that when I go to fashion shops and ask the clerk for another size or color, he/she will say, "Sorry miss but there is no more." But later on when I rummage for more, I can find what I had asked for! What a real turn off! Those clerks are just very lazy to do their job. But I really don't generalize hastily and include the store's image. Maybe it is just really the personnel who's got to be blamed directly. However, in addition, the store's management should also see to it that they are training their personnel especially on matters with customers so as not to sabotage its image and reputation to the public.

I would think they would try to help you find a size, or at least try to find you something close to it. I think the tone is set by the management so obviously theirs was lacking. I could almost understand if they were busy as it did require a few minutes of work, but there was one guy standing there and I think he was just shooting the breeze and not even a customer.
