acupuncture is a technique of inserting and manipulating needles in to specific body points (ouch!)with the aim of relieving pain or for therapeutic purpose. It is thought to have originated in China and is commonly associated with Traditional Chinese medicine. It has been a subject of active and recent studies and yet its effect is not yet well understood and still controversial to researchers and clinicians, but evidence seem that it is effective if not for all, for some. There is also a general agreement that it is perfectly safe if administered by well trained practitioners using sterilized needles. and did you know that more than 10,000 scientific research studies have been published devoting to acupuncture.. such an interesting topic.. and here are some list of illness that acupuncture can help (that is according to my experience):
head ache
fever
severe coughs and colds
relieve pain from dequarvein syndrome
relief from rheumatism
relief from menstrual cramps
and below is my hand while mother is treating it with acupuncture when I suffer from dequarvein syndrome (http://www.wheelessonline.com/ortho/dequervains_disease

Oh it originated from the Chinese. I've seen a person undergoing Acupuncture when I visited a Chinese doctor. I was kinda amused. I saw so many needles inserted in different parts of the body and I found it quite scary. The Doctors doing that must be experts otherwise they might insert in the wrong place ouchhh, hu,hu,hu! Sorry, I don't like even if the Doctor is an expert. Ha!ha!ha! That reminded me of the Korenovela, Jewel in the Palace... the leading lady there was doing Acupanture also. I think it is really effective, is it not? Otherwise the Chinese will not continue that technique.
