Do you feel like a teacher when you award best response?

Most of us consider starting discussions as part of what we do at myLot. I know some of us prefer sticking to responding but there is a fair number who churn out discussions after discussions at enviable paces.
If you have been starting discussions, I hope to think you have been awarding best responses in a timely fashion too. What goes on in your mind when you decide who to give the best response to? Do you have a checklist or something? Or you do it so arbitrarily that someone giving a single word "Yes" or "No" response might just be your lucky winner too?
Do you feel like a teacher when you award those best responses? You know, like someone marking examination scripts, ticking away and awarding marks. Sometimes you act strict, sometimes lenient lol. Do share your thoughts! :D

One of the most inspiring leaders I've met in the last several years does not run a Fortune 500 company, did not launch a startup in his garage, and has not led an armyHe's a schoolteacher. But his persuasion skills are so effective they should be adopted by anyone who manages anyone.
so a guy who brings control of his students in a friendly way and teaches the content in simple way so tatevery one could under stand... should be awarded a good teacher

Sadly, I have to say that I don't give a best response. I know I should, but I find that if I am reading through the thread and do find a response that I agree with, I'll nod my head and keep reading. That I intend to change.
I don't particularly feel like a teacher when I get a best response, but it's nice to know that I did say something to someone that struck a chord.

Well once a month (or 2 maybe), or when you have a bit more time to spare, perhaps you can consider giving best responses. It can be quite fun so don't see it as a chore!

No, I definitely do not feel like a teacher, and I do not feel like I am grading things as such. I usually try for a feeling of who "Got" what I was asking, the intent as well as the words. I am more instinctual that literal, I guess. I do have a few to resolve tomorrow, since I prefer to do them at the end of the month. Problem is, I have my best discussion ever as far as number of response goes and there are so many responses, I know it will be hard to decide. I have decided that the topic is one that struck a chord for many readers, for many reasons.

I can honestly say, and not proudly, that I forget to award best responses. I guess because I am so far behind on responding to discussions and comments. I am trying to work on a lot of discussions tonight, since it is almost the end of the month. Plus my mailbox is bursting with a ton of myLot emails.
I am going to try tomorrow to award some best responses.
I don't feel like a teacher, I honestly award it to the person who truly gives the best response.

Hi lordwarwizard! Whenever I give or award anyone with the best response, I just try to see who gives me the answer that is closer to my heart and if it makes sense at all and sometimes even if I don't agree with his/her opinions but does make a great point, I will award it to him or her. I don't feel like a teacher at all. I guess, I feel like more of a student who is having a multiple choice examination. haha..
Take care always..God Bless!

I know what you mean.
Every now and then, a best response BEST CANDIDATE will jump at me. Sometimes, this happen as soon as I read the response. Even if I mark the BR months later, when it comes to really marking it, I will clearly remember that response.

I had a hard time picking the best response as most of the time a lot of the good responses where by my mylot friends and I want everyone to have a fair chance at a best response. I got some good tips and I just try to read them all equally and pick the one that touched me the most, make me laugh the most, made me consider my own point of view once again or so one. Whatever struck me most .

That's a good strategy as well, I also like to give out best responses to newbies if they have made a good effort to add to the discussion. To help them get going and motivate them to keep up writing good quality responses

So maybe you can let everyone take turn? I try to do that a little unless a response is obviously the best candidate.
I keep a spreadsheet so I know who got BR how many times and who haven't. I try to give those who have not got any before a chance if they are candidates for the BR.

Yup, people love getting best responses. In fact, if someone NEVER ever give out best responses, others might be upset.

Ok stand behind your desks, no talking, teacher is here, you will do as your told or you'll be kept behind after school, do you hear!!!
Right best response, well straight away if I get a deeply profound response like I did today that really knocked me for six I will award it straight away. If the response is informative, interesting and to the point then I will award A+++ LOL. It will also get a positive rating, I do not try to abuse the rating system.
Sometimes there are so many good responses that it is truly hard to decide so I base it on the thought and irrelevance and whether it covered everything. Oh and I don't have a teacher's pet, in that I do not favour friends when awarding br, I am not into nepotism in any way
Ok you can sit down now class!

Are you arguing with the teacher? Wiz? Do you want detention or the slipper? Sometimes a response is so damn good and so damn profound it just hits you in the eyes and it cries out for a br! Ok 1000 lines I MUST NOT ARGUE WITH TEACHER!!

Geez Wolfie, that is so wrong!
By giving a BR too soon, you deprive others! You can't do that unless that BR is going to me.

Nope not me I don't feel like a teacher when giving BR. I feel more like the wicked witch from the west. I hate that job because never fails I always wind up with 4 or 5 best responses and how do you decide?

Wicked witch from the west. Ha!
How do I decide? Well you know about my medals so those who get them already feel better, hopefully. Then I just re-read these bests and see which was is the bestest out of the lot and most relevant to the discussion.

Well, one thing for sure, I do not give out best responses to every thread that I create.
Best responses usually goes to the one that really gets me thinking, or laughing... basically, invoke an emotion in me that makes me really enjoy reading the response.
There is no hard and fast rule to who gets the best response.
There are many times when I go into a discussion that I started, I can re-read the whole thread, nothing in it strikes me to want to give out a best response.
But there are those posts that, when you read it, you know that you HAVE to give it a best response cos it is so well written.

I make the extra effort.
Already I am making the conscious effort to give out positive ratings to all the discussions and responses I respond to.
Working towards reviewing past threads to select the best response for those that have not got it yet.
Look out for it. You may be the many I am intending to give out.

I always feel a bit silly awarding "Best Response." I always imagine myself standing around talking with a group of friends. Suddenly, I slap a ribbon on one friends chest and say "Here ya go, Bob. Your opinion is more valuable than everyone elses!"
Hmmm... maybe I'll start doing that in real life....

Lol, why would that make you feel silly? Change that to you feel important and appreciative that people are responding to you and you are thanking the one who made the most amount of effort!

I don't really feel like a teacher, but I feel smart. I can' deny it is the same thing.
When my star rating goes lower, I feel dumb though.

When I choose best respose I look for the one that I find was the most thought out answer even if it they disagree with how I feel . I am looking for someone who can offer some insight or thought to the question that was asked . I will never reward a best response for a simple yes or no for the simple fact that why should someone recieve a best response when they put no thought into how they were going to answer the question that was asked . If the answer is yes then they can state why the answer is yes and if the answer is no , then they can explain why the answer is no .
I wouldn't say I feel like a teacher but would say that I am looking for something that shows that a person gave a lot of thought about how they were going ot answer and how much time they spent trying to explain what it was they were trying to say .

Hello lordwarwizard,
I don't mark my best response on the spot or after starting my discussion just a few hours or a day. I don't prefer someone in my friend list too. I will get back to my own discussions whenever I have time to do so and mark my best response to the one whom I think gave the best response. Oh! I don't feel like a teacher too whenever I mark the BR. I just feel it is my responsibilities here to let them know that I read all the responses and I appreciate their time spent here. By the way, my discussions have less responses compare to yours and I don't have any difficulties to re-read the responses

when i get a best response award it make s me feel i have been appreciated by the person who made the post and i guess its just the way we answer that it meets the need of the person starting the discussion, personally,i do give best response to people if their response meets my needs for the post i dont just give it arbitrarily,

hi lordwarwizard thanks for reminding me I need to catch
up on giving best responses. I dont fell like a teacher,
but more like a person grateful for her friends responding
so well to her discussions. I also feel like I wish I could
give more than one best response as sometimes I get several
really good responses. its so hard to chose at times.

It can be tough since you start so many discussions.
And yea, you know I don't mean that we are not grateful for the responses - just that sometimes, when you try matching the responses to your own set of criteria, you might just feel like a teacher.
Cheers!
