My 9 year old is totally devastated. her cat apparently got outside 2 days ago. We've looked for her to no avail. My daughter is heartbroken. I tell her that maybe the cat will return, I doubt it though. Any of you guys ever have this problem? What did you tell your child?

I would assure her that the cat can survive. Tell her that the cool thing about cats is their independence, and they don't feel like they have to sit around and be taken care of like other animals do. This situation is how you can explain why they call cats "curious" (and if you wanna tell her what curiosity has done to the proverbial cat, that's your call hehe).
When they get out from the house, they usually come back if they've been around the family/house a while, so hopefully that will be the case here. Good luck finding the lil fella!!
p.s. consider getting the cat fixed if you are tired of seeing "free kitten" signs all over the place, cuz if this cat gets out and reproduces, I bet one more pops up somewhere :D

I have had cats get out and disappear for several days, even for a week or better. They came home. Sometimes they get trapped in garages, sheds, open vehicles etc. Our neighbor's cat crawled into a moving van and ended up going on a cross country trip from Cambria California to Tampa Florida. The moving company flew the cat home for my neighbors. But the whole point is the cat will come home if it is able. I have always told my kids that God would take care of the cat and loves them and will return when they are ready.
Don't doubt that the cat will return, keep your mind open and figure that the cat is having a vacation and when it's tired of the vacation it will come back.

When I was younger, I had a baby kitten that got outside. It was gone for a couple of days, but eventually came home. I have noticed that cats always seem to find there way back home. So there is a chance that it will come back.

I used to have cat that disappeared every so often, he would get out and just disappear. He would be gone for a week to ten days at a time and he would always come back he would be a lot thinner but he would be fine. I am not sure if yours will, but hopefully it will, it is horrible when they just disappear.

my cat recently got out without me seeing him get out because he is a sly sneak. i just prayed and all the suddenly i looked out the window and saw him walking outside. i ran out, chased after him, picked him up and took him inside. he looked kindof depressed walking outside. i think he got used to being an indoor cat that when i called his name and came close to him, he didnt run away, and just looked sad. since i adopted him, i made him an indoor cat and he got used to it. he is spoiled now.
when i was little, same thing happened, and i just prayed. and usually the next day or sooner, they would show up somewhere.

cats are smart. it will come home. put some of its food out on your doorstep. the cat will start to get scared and come home. we actually let our cat go outside when she wants to. then we just call her name and she comes back to the house. P.S. to prevent this problem again they have a product that is a tiny gps tracking dvice the size of a grain of rice. it is implanted under the skin and you get a cd with software for your computer. the soft ware then tracks the cat where ever it goes and it displays a map of the city on your computer hope this helps.

One of our cats got out and he was gone for 14 days before we finally got him. He was in the neighbourhood but got into a fight with another cat and he daren't come back into the street again. We rented a special cage from the RSPCA to catch him and fortunatly that worked.
I was devistated knowing he wanted to come back but couldn't, meowing to us but to affraid to be picked up as he knew he would go through the street again where he had the fight. He was just to frightened.
When he got back in he was the same sweet house cat as ever.
I would be honest, telling her that there is a chance the cat won't come back. Children appreciate honesty. Tell her you will do whatever you can to get the cat back. Put posters everywhere in the neighbourhood and ask anyone who knows the cat to look out for him/her. Check local newspapers. Perhaps someone took the cat in.
Good luck, it's hard losing a cat. I wish you the best of luck finding him/her.

My nephew's cat got away when he was about the same age. It was a lazy cat. There is no way she would have gone far. Somebody must have grabbed her, when she was sunning herself on the steps. We told him that somebody stole her and might resell her. Unfortunately, a lot of pets were stolen at the time and from the news about it he figured out very quickly where those pets were sold off to (animal research in case yo didn't catch onto that). Broke his heart, but he got over it and took very good care of the next pet.

put food outside and it will eventually come home, it's probably just exploring, cats have an instinct and they know where there home is. they only way it won't return is if something happened to it or it got picked up by someone.

Hi! Losing cats happened to our family for several times. We have absolutely no idea where those cats went. But there was one cat that got lost. We thought we'd never see it again. But 1 week after, he got back. We were so happy that he found his way back. Another cat also got away...but I think he preferred the streets. I hope your daughter's cat will be able get back.

Hi there! I don't have a child yet and i don't have a pet yet. But my neighbor lost her cat once before too. Her young daughter was very upset and hardly eat for few days. Her mum told her that the cat just went out for vacation and maybe the cat found some other family who will treat the cat very well too. Then the mum went to get another kitten for the young girl. The cat never return until today, and no one knows what happened to the cat. Anyway, don't worry, kids can get over it very fast.
