Did you know who Sarah Palin was?

Yesterday, when it was announced that John McCain had chosen Sarah Palin as his running mate, the first words out of my mouth was "Who is Sarah Palin?" I never heard of her before yesterday. I guess I shouldn't feel too bad; I watched a video where a newswoman admitted to having to look her up on Wikipedia because she has no idea of her background. Now that I have googled her, and know a little bit more about her, I am not sure if McCain made the right move or not. It is either a stroke of genius, or a complete bone-head choice. I think it boils down to McCain trying to convince people like me that he is serious about not playing Washington politics (Palin is an outsider) and people like my wife that she should vote for a woman. So did you know who she was before yesterday? And do you think he made the right decision?

I had the same reaction. She's Governor of a state with a quarter the population of Brooklyn, and she's got some really...OUT there...affiliations. See for yourself: http://tinyurl.com/5nanrm

An anti-Sarah Palin blog. What a brilliant source. I have better things to do than read their drivel. She's governor of the largest state in the country. The population may be small, but the geographic size of the state brings issues not present in city or smaller state. There's more to being a governor than dealing with the people in your state.

The blog entry does no 'original research', it's all sourced, cited, and quoted--so look at the myriad links coming off of that entry and find fault with THEM if you can. I wonder if you would equally dismiss a blog that praised her as a "pro-Sarah Palin" blog? "I have better things to do than read their drivel." Why don't you listen to the woman herself express her complete ignorance and lack of drive for the position she was just nominated for, just a month before being picked? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pak-rH0dCeA (2:50) I'm not surprised the Romney and Pawlenty are angry at having been passed over in favor of this newbie.

Thanks for the link, it's a little long I read some and have to come back when I can read without the noise. I have been wondering a few things about her and her anti abortion views.

I've known who she was for a long time. I've been repeatedly saying that she would be the best choice for McCain's VP, and I've repeatedly told people the reason he's been waiting so long is because if he chose his VP first, Obama would have chosen Clinton to counter. McCain's move was brilliant as Obama failed to take the sure thing and pick Clinton. This gives McCain an edge with women voters while shoring up his weaknesses as a president. I really think she's a brilliant and strong woman who brings a lot to the ticket and may be seen as one of the best VP choices ever.

That poll was done less than 24 hours after McCain's decision. The people polled didn't have enough information to make a valid assessment. It would be better to look at polls done after people learn about her. In comparison only 39% of voters said Biden was ready to be president when a poll was conducted shortly after Obama choosing him as a running mate. As Biden is extremely experienced that number is ridiculous. As with Palin, most of the people polled probably had no idea who he was at the time. I know you're generally an honest guy, but the flickr photo you used really doesn't look like any official poll at all. The data in that photo doesn't match anything written in the source you listed either. Overall according to that article her effect on his campaign is clearly more positive than negative. It is also more positive than Biden's effect on Obama's campaign.

That is something that I didn't think about. Yeah, Obama probably would have chosen Hillary to counter this move if he would have seen it coming. I know a lot of Democrats wanted him to...well, time will telll who made the correct choice; November is just a couple of months away.

Women aren't so stupid as to flock to voting for McCain just because his running mate has two X chromosomes. In fact, it looks like women are LESS satisfied with the pick than men are. So much for that gamble: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3020/2810618377_1d08f2d3f6_o.png (source: http://tinyurl.com/6f6ulx ) McCain's Hail Mary didn't work, like it or not.

No, I did not know who she was, and the minute I found out that she had been choosen for McCain's running mate, I sure did do my research to find out who she is. By the way, he made a bad decision in choosing her.

Yeah, I researched her right after the news broke. An advantage of being self-employed is that you can do things like that when you feel like it. I am not sure if he made a bad decision or not; in my mind, the jury is still out on that issue.

She had been on Glenn Beck where I first saw her. Personally, I think he made an excellent choice and it clenched my vote.

I actually did know who she was. I sort of pay attention to this stuff but she has been one of the better republican governors out there recently. I am sure a lot of democrats will not like her but that shows how strong her republican views are I guess. I am neither and I am not sure how anyone can simply agree to just be one party or another. It seems kind of ridiculous to me to think one party can have all the ideas that you personally believe in or agree with and the parties often fight and disagree with each other even when it costs the American people.

I tend to vote for candidates from both parties despite belonging to one of them. I have never voted a straight party ticket in the twenty-two years that I have been voting.

I did know who she was. I had mentioned her in another post as a candidate that would be an excellent choice for VP. I think that is what makes her one of the best choices though.... people don't know her. They will learn more as this campaign goes on and will realize she isn't more of the same in Washington.

no, but since barrak only had 6 months in the senate i didn't know him either, but i think mccain made a sweet move having her as v.p. she should be able to pick up some of hillary's votes now that she's out of the picture.so the race is really between biden and mccain i think the others have no experience to speak of.

I had heard of her name, but I couldn't have told you which state she was head of. I think he made the right choice, and I think it is a good choice. He is trying to pick up women voters, but in particular I like this woman, and I admire all she has accomplished - all while rearing a family. It could turn out badly for him, or it could be a good move. I guess time will tell, but no matter which party we all belong to, it is nice to see an intelligent woman being given a chance at such a high position.

I had heard OF her (not the same as knowing who she is)...but I'm a politics + news blogger, I catch a bit of everything...and sometimes work extensively to increase my knowledge about something. However, the more I learn about her...the more I realize how shaky this decision was for McCain I think he prolly botched this one...it mighta worked better for him before DNC, but now...I dunno. According to GALLUP, she's getting a pretty low vote of confidence.

Palin who? Nope never heard of her and as far as I am concerned it was a simple play for the ex-Hillary vote. It talks down to women as far as I am concerned. It is like saying, "the only reason you vote it gender.... you don't vote on issues other than that one". As far as I am concerned it is saying that he thinks women are stupid.

Yes. When he announced his vice-president choice, me and my dad were also like, Well, who is she? We din't even know she was a choice. We were looking at the likely candidates online, and on the major political blogs/sites she was not even mentioned! No one knew about her... A CNN interview with her in July, and she said that she din't want to be Vice president. So where did this decsion come out on? Just to get the Clinton voters to his side? Did he feel threathened by them? Anyways... after like an hour of that discussion and off watching CNN, it became clear who she was but not why she was chosen as VP!
