I am wondering what some of you think. My niece is 9 years old and she went to public school for kindegarden and first grade. Then after her first grade year the public school said she was up to second grade level, but how was that when she was failing most of her subject? So needless to say we pulled her out put her in private school she ended up getting held back, but at the end of her first grade class she was up to a 3rd grade level. So what do you all think about the public schools today??

hi gypsie!
i am a graduate of public school from elementary to high school, with top honors, and i continued to compete in college, graduating still with honors in a top private university in our city.
however, this was a long time ago, and i am not really sure about the quality of education that public school materials and teachers give. i mean of course, we lacked training also in the past, and i compensated my lack of training by reading on my own and exposing myself to different media, and then of course, i learned most of what i do today on the job.
but lately, i have been editing textbooks for public schools written by supposed to be doctorates in english and man, oh well...i guess that is what i can say about their composition, etc..
anyway, i am not really sure. but wherever our kids are, one thing we can be sure of is that parental support and outside influences still determine the overall learning of the children. sometimes though, i just worry about public schools because frats and gangs. otherwise, i think it is okay.
you should really check what is going on in the school of your niece. take care and God bless you!

Well, I don't mean to undermine the public schools, but there's actually a huge difference between public schools and private ones. Well, it doesn't ensure that children going to private schools are more akin to becoming successful in life, but I'm sure that the opportunities of more learning is available in private schools than in public ones.
But of course, where the child goes to school isn't enough, the parents still has the obligation to nurture the child's mind at home and shouldn't leave all the teaching, most especially values, to schools.
If you could afford a good private school, then that would be great. But if not, public schools will suffice but responsibility of nurturing your kids would always fall on the parents themselves. After all, life's teaching doesn't end in the four corners of the school. It's high time parents should acknowledge their part in building up the kid's character and future.
