while travelling i had a chance to visit a place in india. i was near a temple and the people around were gathered in a huge crowd. i also peeped into and witnessed very unique thing never seen before . people around were amused to see and beating drums. a few people were piercing their bodies at various places with iron rods!!at the cheek . near the chest and the naval region . big iron rods weighing heavily and many of them piercing their bodies.through the tongue. i could not see i for long and left the place in a huff. have you ever experienced it before ?

Hi.
I have seen it a couple of times, when I was in "Bhuj". I can hardly remember the whole indecent, because it was way back in 1994 and I was only 7 years old at that time. As far as I remember though, there was a tribe there who's people perform this kind of things twice in a year to please their tribal god. I am not very much fond of such things though.

alright coolmailraj. yeah it is going around in many backward areas which are predominantly tribal belts!!
no body seems to be fond of such things but since i saw it i can not forget it that easily!!
it is indeed painful and their dedication to the deity and their faith is the overriding factor in all the exercise!!

I've seen it on television and in pictures but I've never actually witnessed it, those people must have an amazing tolerance to pain or be in a deep trance to be able to do it.

Good day... Nope I never had a chance to see such a thing and I'm not looking forward to seeing one either. I don't see or can understand the logic while people are mutilating themselves like that. It's just don;t make any sense.

I have never experienced such things in reality. But yes i have seen similar things on TV. I just don't know how they do it. They are harming their bodies and don't realize it. Here when we get a small cut or wounded we feel it a lot at times.
Imagine piercing piercing their bodies at various places with iron rods. Oh my god how painful that could be. Seriously speaking they are dumb. What fun they get in doing all this makes no sense to me at all.

people here in India have different weird beliefs which you can not cure. and you might not know your lifetime why they do so? So , they were on their own, we are just spectators hoping it will change sooner or later,but mind you that not only India in many foreign countries also affected by this.

hi dear harichandan, it is a firm belief among the people in some backward communities that you can please your GODS in this way and they keep non performing such acts off and on or on specific periods!!
well you say that i am not an athiest but what is the celebration going around in all over maharashtra about ganapati puja and visarjan after the puja. and the similar thing in bengal about kali puja?
is it also about the wierd thinkings?

I have never witnessed that, and don't wish to witness either. I get really depressed and my nausea rating gets very low at such scenes. I may even vomit at such occasions.
Just reading the topic was really painful to me as the body piercing at various parts, and those also with heavy iron rods, which means PAIN PAIN AND PAIN. I wonder how the crowd managed to see it for such a long time. As of me I have never witnessed such events in my life.

Body piercing, body torturing, body beating, lifted through hooks on skin and flesh... all are different forms of worshipping their Gods. They want to please the God by offering such crazy things. People with such primitive mind and thoughts are there in every part of the world, but you can see more of them in India and sub cultures.
Superstition mixed with religion pretends that they are integral part of the culture. Infact those gathered believe in the powers and blessings of their God.
For me also, it is horrible to see such scenes, but I have seen.

yes dear aryajayaprakash most of the people do it with religious bent of mind to please their GOD but is it fair? will the GODS be pleased in this way?it is rather insane and it is better if one goes and serves the poor or the needy in their hour of absolute need. like we are having in bihar save a life!!god will be happy!!give food to some one!!

i know such things exit in many different places all around the world, not only in India.but ive never seen it happen in person.its scary.but to tell the truth,i respect them. they sacrifice themselves to their beliefs.i would dare to witness the whole process.i will only wish them good. anyway,you know,Gods are also different vary from places.

Its shabby and bloody as well. I've never seen such an act before my eyes but have seen on the TV. I don't think that their faith prescribes these acts but some influential crooked minded dhongibabas lead the poor and illiterate rural population of India who say that by doing this they will gain moksha.

hi xpertcomments. it is indeed shabby and bloody . it takes roots from the fact that at one time people used to offer a sacrifice to the deity a live soul . and it is still practiced in many parts among many communities not only in india but in the outside world too. previously it was in the name of religion and the offer was distributed and accepted as prasad but today you will find killings at all corners and the stuff available as a fruit and vegetable!! raw or cooked under great and prestigious banners!!

I had never seen this before. And i don't wish to see one. From what i imagine from what you describe, it's kinda scary. Is it bloody? Or they have their way to pierce themselves? Any ambulance around in case some accidents occur when they try to pierce themselves?

hi dear corngrass it is and it can not be a worth seeing sight!!
but the sight is so exciting with the beat of the drums around that it makes it all the more scary and astonishing when many of such people are visible around and indulging in this kind of activity. many of them will have around adozen or more of such piercings with iron rods!!!horrible to see!!
