Would you pay to take calls and receive text messages on your mobile phone?

Currently in Britain, mobile phone users do not have to pay to receive calls or text messages.
However, mobile phone users may soon be charged to receive calls and text messages in new plans by the main regulator.
Apparently, this is already done in America where users are billed for their incoming as well as outgoing calls. Is this true?
What do you think? Would you pay to receive calls and text messages on your mobile phone?

Here in the Phils., we do pay for text msgs and calls on our cell phones. I do pay for my internet use on my phone too. I pay an extra P2.50 per msgs i send and i am being charged too of every msg i receive thru the net. But i do have my wifi connection at home which is P1000.00/a month. I have to stay connected on the net because it is my lifeline to friends and my loved ones so i have no choice but to pay for txt msgs, phone calls and my wifi. It is a little steep but i am happy being connected so i guess it's ok.

You didn't mention whether you are paying to receive as well as take calls.. With the internet, it is pretty expensive in many countries
Here, it's affordable

I have to respond to this discussion.
To answer your questions. yes, it is truth that people in the USA pay for incoming calls and texts ( I do ) At first it seemed unfair, but one gets used to it, I know I did. There are so many planes, I chose to go the prepaid plan, with a bundle of texts, so to me it is very cheap to get texts and to text, and the calls are ok too, and because there are so many plans out there, I guess people will pay what they are willing to pay.

I do hope they'll have some affordable bundles but I see this cutting back on the calls and free messages included in plans already.. I'd also not want to call people or text them or vice versa if I know I will or they will pay for just receiving the call. This could be the start of something quite interesting

To Marina to me and due to how I use the phone it is a great plan.
To Irish whatever works for you is great.
To us texting works and we all text in different levels.
Me and my daughter text to each other often, she prefers to have only a text bundle and that works for her because she pays minute per minute.
I have a mini plan, 200 anytime minutes and 500 for weekends/nights, that gives me a text bundle at half price for 1000 text messages, so for me is great.
I can see that texting does not work for everyone, you have a great plan btw

I'm in the US, so I already do pay for incoming calls and texts. With most companies here, you have a plan that gives you a certain number of talk-time minutes every month and minutes are deducted whenever you are talking on the phone. However, most companies do not deduct minutes for night-time calls or on weekends, those times are free for both incoming and outgoing calls. If you have a shared plan, you can also call others on your plan for free at any time. Texts are the same way, you pay an extra fee each month ($5-$15 gets you 500-unlimited texts) to send texts, or you can pay by the text ($0.25 usually).
Personally, I pay about $90 a month for a family plan that includes 3 cell phones and 700 minutes, which really isn't that bad a price, really.

That's a pretty good deal. If you are already paying for unlimited texts, then that should absorb the cost of the incoming texts, too (at least it would here), thought they will probably raise your rates for "unlimited" plans to make up the difference for themselves. It's all about the money.
In the US, cell phone users have always had to pay for both incoming and out going calls, back to the 80's when cell phones first hit the market (and the calls were hugely expensive back then!), so it is just sort of accepted here. I'm sure the companies will find it a lot harder to push on customers that haven't had to pay incoming charges for years in other countries.
Hope they decide against it for your sake.

We do have affordable contracts and plans here too but do not pay for receiving calls or texts and they are proposing to put these in place..
I currently have a plan of 600 minutes to any network and unlimited texts, 15 video calls for £35 pounds a month and a free N95 phone which I'd pay for within the plan; sounds all good before you bring in having to pay for any calls or texts I may receive

Thank goodness, the competition between the different telco in Singapore is too stiff for them to even consider such a move. In the not so long ago past, telco used to charge for incoming calls too. However, one telco started to provide free incoming calls and the other telco start to do likewise. So far, I've never paid for incoming calls or incoming messages before. I hope I'll never need to.

i used to have to when i had a regular phone. now i have a boost mobile. you can beep back and forth all day long for just a dollar a day. they dont charge you if you dont beep any one. that day. its prepay, you can talk to anyone in the USA that has a phone like it. its like a walkie talkie. others have to have it to talk with you. its a lot better and cheaper than my regular cell was.

yes it is true that in the US incoming calls & txt for free is rare, usually you dont have any choice if that certain free services is not available in your area, so whether you like it or not, if you need it, you gotta. right now i think only the cellphone provider called Cricket is the only one offering such free service in the US. they also have unlimited local calls. however here in the philippines, people wouldn't buy cellphone service whom charge for incoming calls.

In Canada, a couple of the cell phone companies are charging to receive texts unless you have a text message plan. Right now we are paying for receiving texts because we are still deciding about which plan to move to.

Well on the plan that we have and the carrier that we have, we don't pay for incoming calls they are all free, and our incoming text messages are free, but if we send a text message its .25 a message unless your enrolled in a text message plan. The only time we have to pay extra on our phone bill is if we go over our minutes in our plan, most of the time we don't go over tho.
@marina321 (4556)

Yes, we also don't pay for incoming calls or messages at the moment so unless it's included in the plan would be very relatively expensive.

Yes except with certain 'everything' type plans or some plans which are free incoming everything - but you pay more for those. If you are trying to get by with something very cheap, you are going to be restricted by having fewer minutes, no free nights, no free weekends, etc.
My plan for instance is through tmobile. I have the fave-five plan 300 which is unlimited calls to and from 5 numbers of my choosing, but only 300 anytime minutes per month to and from other callers. I do have free nights and weekends, which is 9pm or later every night and weekend is considered Friday after 9pm till Monday 6am I believe. I have an unlimited internet package which includes every type of text, pictures, im, email. If I had to pay PER TEXT I would be charged 15 cents! Talk about ripping off the consumer. Most people who text a lot get an all-inclusive, it quickly becomes way too expensive otherwise.

I agree with you on that one, first they have us where they want us with all these FREE this and FREE that plans and now they think they might as well charge us for incoming calls too

Uh I don't think that would ever happen here in the Philippines because we're still a developing country and everyone would lose interest in the cellphone if this happened. When I'm abroad I need to activate my phone's roaming service though which means that I pay for calls I make and receive. It's really annoying, but I pay up anyway because I don't have a choice.

Yeah, roaming is pretty expensive! You can get a nasty shock when you get the bill.. I don't use roaming at all now..I'd rather pay for the calls in local currency

Here in U.S., I personally only know of 1 company that offered free incoming plan & it was Nextel... But once nextel & Sprint merged, now I don't think they offer it anymore... People who has gotten the plan is "granfathered" into it so as long as they don't change their plan, they would be good... Thankfully, I have unlimited everything on my phone... I have my phone plan through T-Mobile... I'm paying $100 for the voice part, which also includes unlimited messaging... I also have blackberry plan & I'm paying extra $20 & that gives me unlimited emails & internet access... I do work at a retail store that gives me discounts on my cell. phone bill so my total bill after the tax & fees, it comes out to $116/month... I do use my phone for work & personal reasons & I don't use land line phone at all... Only 2 reason why I have a "phone line" in the house is because I have DSL for my internet connection & my daughter uses it every once in a blue moon... For the type of usage I get on my phone, if I didn't have the plan I have, I'd be paying a lot more than I'm paying now... I am paying for the incoming calls & text messages but I don't pay for it(?) considering my plan includes everything...

since there's a mobile phone in China, Chinese people will have pay both take call or receive. btw, the most expensive fees all over the world. on the other hand, most Chinese people get poor wages as well.

I live in America. I pay one certain amount per month and I can get as many incoming calls as I want. There is a certain number of text messages I can send and receive before they start charging but I never go over my limit. I also get free night and weekend calls where anyone can call me and I can call anyone.

No I would not!
Here in Italy there are at least three different companies operating on the mobile phones. They all three have options whereby you EARN from incoming calls and not the opposite.
If the ones I am using start to charge me to receive calls and text then that would be the end of my contract with them
Hope this is only a rumour and does not be enforced ever.
Happy posting!

Hoping it's a rumour too especially since it's the regulator saying this and not particular network(s) It was in the papers this week that they may charge for receiving calls and text messages to distribute costs of termination of contracts and people moving from one network to another and that this may make actual costs of making calls and text messages a bit lower...but I do not see that happening; we're happy to pay for just making calls and texting, thankyou very much!
That's good that you earn for receiving calls and texts

That does not seem right does it? So the person that sends a message or makes a call gets charged but then so does the person who they are calling or messaging! That is unfair to me, but I guess that I will not have a choice if I want to keep using a mobile! I wonder if that would appy to pay as you go as well. I am lucky in that I only text on mine anyway so it would only be that I would have to pay for.
@marina321 (4556)

It does seem unfair yes! First they make mobile phones cheaper, then they make contracts cheaper, then they give us free calls and free messages, then unlimited text messages and calls to any network inclusive - now they want to charge us for taking and receiving calls!
The proposals would mean that you would pay for any texts you receive too! I use texting more on mine too so it would be a bummer

Hadn't thought of the wrong calls and texts Nothing as annoying as getting those texts that you have send a STOP message to stop receiving as they keep charging you for any received
Yup, time to not take those calls with no caller ID! hehe
