My uncle has come to stay with us for at least the weekend and early next week. He is from New Orleans, and he has evacuated here. With him, he has brought his three cats and two dogs, like he did when he came here after Katrina. My cat did not like the other cats the first time, and he still hates them now. The door opened, and one of my uncle's cats (appropriately named Satan) came out to investigate. Our cat, Patch (he has one eye) saw him, and immediately attacked. It would work more towards his advantage if he wasn't fighting someone with claws. Since he is an inside cat, and loves tearing up the furniture (but ignores his scratching post), we declawed him. I just hope that they can learn to get along.

When my kitty had to stay at the vet for a few days after I went and got her my other cat would hiss at her when she got home for a few days I think she smelled the scent of other cats. Even cats that are declawed can fight as the vet told me they fight with their back claws anyways. She will be able to hold her own and hopefully they will learn to get along.

Well, yes. They do fight. Both mother and I work at a vet clinic, and my uncle works at Pet Smart, so we all know how to work with cats and dogs and other types of animals. We did what we did last time--we slowly introduced everyone. We kept the cats separated for the first evening and night. One of the cats were loose at one point, so she was able to see Patch, and Patch was able to see her. It is just a bit confusing and complicated here at the moment, because right now we have a total of five dogs and four cats here (we have one cat, three dogs, they have two dogs, three cats). I just wasn't sure if Patch would remember the other cats or not. But, I do know that he started to calm down after a while when they were first here, because we didn't have to watch them together after a while.

Since they are only staying a short time, I advise just keeping his cats in some part of the house away from your Patch. They aren't staying so there's no reason to try and introduce them.

There are proper ways to introduce cats, but you have to do it AGAIN if they don't stay. So, they stay for a few weeks/months and leave for another 3 years, its back to square one. A cat can't remember that long a time.

Yes, we know that. We were kind of hoping that there would be something there, but as you can see in a comment that I made below, we did take the steps once again to reintroduce them. They are starting to calm down now. Our cat is sleeping on my bed right now, and the other one is roaming, and neither seem to be bothered at the moment.

See, we don't really know that, either. They were here for several weeks last time, so they had a chance to meet and greet last time. But, we don't know how bad they will be effected, so it could end up being just as long. We figure, best to kind of do everything now so that we won't have to do it again later for this visit.

We evacuated to Texas. In the car was my sister's cat and our dog. We didn't think they would get along, but they did. lol In my brother's house where we evacuated to was 2 more cats. 1 was about 2 months old. My dog got along fine with all the animals, but my sister's cat tried to kill the 2 month old kitten. Funny story about that. Nikki my sister's cat kills all the rats, lizards, etc that he finds, so when he saw Shadow (kitten) he thought it was a rat! He pinned it down with his paw and had his mouth around his neck. The poor kitten was screaming, my sister stopped it and then Nikki followed the kitten around thinking he needed to protect it now. lol Funny how animals relate to others. I hope you cat and uncle's cat can co-inside with each other, or you find away to keep them seperated. I also hope your uncle was able to get back home.

Hi, Glad to hear there was minor damage. We had our carport come down, but it's back up now. Luckily it didn't fly off like it did for Katrina. lol I am originally from New Orleans, I moved to Kenner 15 years ago. Yes it is weird how animals behave and I do agree that people need to learn a lesson from them at times.

He was able to get back home, thank you. And, they suffered minor damage. Are you also from New Orleans? It IS weird how animals get along, sometimes. One moment, they're fighting, and the next, they shake hands and become good friends. Some do. If only more people could be like that, then we would really have something good.

Isn't there a way to keep them apart? I think it's wonderful that you are helping your uncle. I'm hoping that this storm isn't as bad as Katrina. These people suffered enough for a lifetime. Let's pray that it won't be as bad.

I am not religious, but I will hope. And yes, sort of. Mostly we're just monitoring them. We can't keep the other cats shut up in one room all day, it would just be torture for them. The cats finally did start to calm down, until they saw our dogs. Now we have a new problem!

If you think your uncle cat (Satan) is going to attack Patch You should keep them separated, Patch is at home so he should be free to roam. What are you going to do? With a name like Satan I would keep him away from my declawed kitty. Poor Patch he doesn't stand a chance.

My cat is actually the one that is attacking him. He doesn't really like the idea of the other cats in his home. Satan just has the upper-hand because he has all of his claws. That, and he has a lot of practice in biting and kicking and clawing because he is very playful, unlike my lazy cat. They eventually got used to each other (well, somewhat) when he was here for about a month after Katrina, but we're going through the process all over again.
