My birthday is and it has changed ever since 2001, I do not even bring my birthday up unless somebody happens to ask me or something because its like your bringing up old feelings, thats what its like for me, Its not even like you can feel ok celebrating it, its weird. Do you feel this way? Do you or someone you know have a b-day on this day? What if you did, do you think it would change the way you feel about your b-day?Honestly, Im even afraid when I put my b-day on official documents anymore because Im afraid Im gonna find out the first time I fly (if that ever happens) that Im on the blacklist, even locally, I think people are going to be suspicious of me, even worse is my boyfriend is Turkish and named Hasan, how does that look.

My birthday is also on September 11th. I now celebrate my birthday on the 12th. I just couldn't after what happened in 2001. I guess it's my way of being respectful. About the blacklist.....girl you are not the only one who has thought that:)

OMG. Yes, it does put you in a bit difficult situation. hmm... I think people from your hometown are joking... (or slightly jealous?) & may not even be aware they are hurting your feelings... If you're uncomfortable about it, you can always celebrate a day or two before or after... 10th is supposed to be a lucky day.. :) Many people celebrate on the closest Saturday or Sunday anyway... I don't see how anyone could blame you for your birthday anywhere... Not sure if you can change birthday like you can change a name? (you could ask or look it up?) /Or would that look even more suspicious?/ Also, IMO you don't get on the blacklist for such simple things... I think there are probably a lot of Turkish people everywhere... & IMO Arabic people may have it even worse, but even they can survive somehow.. There are even people with surname Bin Laden who manage to survive somehow.. & still fly planes.. (I read an excellent book by & about Carmen Bin Laden) To quote Wikipedia: 'She says it's a large family & not all family members are directly associated with Osama.' Now if your bf would really be involved in some iffy activities, that would be different. That might get the two of you blacklisted. Even then, if you are truly innocent, I believe it can be proven.. People might be a bit stricter at airports, but if you have nothing to hide... You're safe, IMO.

yea I do not think I have too much problems with officials but its scary when there was all the talk about terrorism because it seemed like so many people arabic and even Turkish became suspects, me and my boyfriend went to Canada a year after 9/11 and when crossing the Border we had to wait 20 minutes because they came up with another persons name also Hasan that was similar to my boyfriends and my boyfriend had to keep telling them, 'that is not me!' and then just this year April 2008, when we crossed the Border to visit Toronto after seeing the falls from the American side we had to go inside the customs and waited 45 minutes! I had to talk my boyfriend through it because I could tell he felt so discriminated against and I do not blame him. There were two Arabic familys waiting with us and some Japanese people. Thats why its hard not to wonder in the back of your mind if you will be the suspect. Thanks so much for your support!

My friend's birthday is Sept. 11 too. What's wrong with that? Celebrate if you want to, be thankful for another year of your life. You have nothing to do with that incident, what are you ashamed of? It's a blessed day for you.

You shouldn't be too ashamed to celebrate at all. I think a lot of people would be pleased to find something positive about that day. And I don't think anyone would think it looked suspicious. And why on earth does your boyfriends name make you look bad?

because some people are frightened of terrorism and will relate the slightest like a name to terroristic cause, even in the small town i grew up in (rural), they have a name for my boyfriend, "Hassana Bin Laden", even though I know these people growing up I just cannot believe what Im hearing when they say things like that.
