It seems that there are a lot of ppl that text message. I don’t…I don’t even use a cell phone except in an extreme emergency. I know there are ppl that can’t live without them and such but I’m one of those that can live happily without one.
I’ve been seeing a lot of ppl using texting when they do their discussions both starting them and responding to them. Stuff like R U ok? I C U. I'm here 2. Personally, I find it annoying but then I’m sure there are things I do that ppl find annoying LOL Perhaps it becomes a habit after texting for so long.
Do you text on MyLot? Is it annoying when others do it? Do you think it’s intentional or habit?

Just the other day I used my first
text speak on Mylot.
I referred to peanut butter
as pb. I was hoping everyone knew
what I meant. It was a discussion
about peanut butter and I just got
tired of typing that word.
Though I guess that I could have
copied/pasted the word every time I wanted
to use it. Wish I'd thought of that before!

I have never texted anyone. I probably wouldn't even know how to do it. I noticed a few days ago that I had received a text from someone in July. I didn't recognize the number and it didn't make any sense so I am assuming it was sent to me by mistake. Normally the only texts I receive are from Cingular and I don't normally even read them.

I write out everything, I don't do texting with my cell neither. I have a prepay cell phone and its only used when it is needed. I think it is a habit with some people. Specially the younger ones. I don't even know the letters for the words, some of course are easy.

Hi Twoey I actually do text quite a bit on my cell phone and it is an easier way to keep in touch or ask a question and anser it than phone someone and spending money..I say that as my texts are free and so are minutes on my contract phone..when out it is good so that if anyone wants to contact me they can as I don't have an answer phone..as for texting on mylot I haven't actually noticed or seen anyone doing that but guess when you do start texting it is hard not to do it when writing so in all it hasn't annoyed me..but if people do I would rather think its out of habit..blessings littleowl

Are you referring to the 'abbreviations' that people make while texting? If so, I guess we're all a bit guilty of that.
I don't do it often but will occasionally come out with "LOL". Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I prefer to write things out. Maybe it's because I was an English major. I don't know.
All I do know is that some of these abbreviations are so obtuse that I have to think about them for awhile before I understand what they mean.
I do not text message on my cell phone. I don't understand why people do that. Why don't you just talk? I mean, it's a PHONE, right? It takes much less time to say something than it does to type it out. I don't care how much you abbreviate. But, I suppose that some people think of them as little computers.
To me, a phone is a phone and a computer is a computer, but you won't find the kind of abbreviations in any dictionary that some people use while text messaging! In my opinion, it's just plain laziness. If you're going to type, LEARN to type. If you're going to use the English language to do that, learn how to spell.
I noticed that you use 'ppl' instead of 'people'. It took me awhile to figure out what 'ppl' stood for! I mean, I've known it for awhile now, but it took awhile when I first saw it typed.

I don't text on Mylot and normally when I text on my phone I still spell everything out unless I am in a hurry. It doesn't really bother me unless it's something that I don't know the meaning of. I think it's more habit than anything when people do it.

I don't text on My Lot.When I do text, i use complete sentences. I don't understand many of the text phrases. And if I can't read and understand a post, how can I respond to it. I had read LOL about 100 times before I looked it up.

I don't text as a rule, and like you, I find that cell phones are being misused, and that they are for emergency calls, rater than a social tool.
I do text occasionally in answer to a text message from my daughter, but that's about it.
I don't necessarily find it annoying that other people do so, but I don't find it that interesting either.

Hi,
My post is late considering this discussion started 4 months ago, but I do find some texting still occurring, especially with young folks. But others may find it difficult to understand. In fact in one thread, someone advised the texter to study English grammar, apparently unaware the person was using text. LOL
I don't know if myLot has rules regarding text. I'm fine with reading it, as long as it's intelligible.

And really, these people that use short phrases or letters, as you call text messaging,
are silly because they are losing money from mylot, by doing so. The longer our posting
is the more money we make, so why shorten it by using text messages.
But then, maybe they don't know about the way we get paid and so they don't know better
and they think they are just saving time by not typing out the whole word. I used
to tell other members this, but I don't anymore because let them find out for themselves.
I am not being mean in this, but when I suggested to some people to use the whole words
and told them why, they either didn't care or they just didn't read my response or they
don't think I am right about it, so I don't say anything anymore about it to them.
Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend,
Have a good mylotting day, Chris

Hi Twoey, This made me laugh when I read ppl instead of people as to me this is a text abreviation. I don't mind the odd abbreviation and sometimes in a header there isn't room so you need to shorten a word or two bu throughout the whol discussion is annoying and not necessary but each to their own really. If the conent of what is being asked is good I will still respond. I don't even abbreviate on a text so definitely don't on myLot and like you tend to use my mibile more for receiving calls or emergency calls really.

twoey I think some people here have texted so much they'have
forgotten how to spell people, your, you, I see you and other words that are in our english vocabulary. Prettysoon nobody will spell anything out, it will all be gibberish.this really annoys
me right up the wazoo. People learn how to spell English words again you just might need to know how to do it. lol lol lol

I HATE TEXT SPEAK!!! i find it annoying and rude. i think if you can't take the time to spell out your thoughts then you shouldn't bother. Honestly, the only reason it became popular with cell phones is because you have to hit the same number repeatedly to type one character. i should hope every one's computer keyboard came equipped with a keypad for each letter. *huffs* i think i prefer lolcat to text speak, and those cats should be taught better English, too!

*grumbling* My mate texts me at least 30 times a day. He texts while driving, while on the computer, during work... he has one of the phones with the full keyboard, so he spells everything out. i love his messages, don't get me wrong... but i don't have the full keyboard so i hate to reply!

I don't even use text speak in text messages. I love our language and hate to see it ruined in any way. I even get annoyed when I read a book and there's no 'u' in colour. I only got a mobile phone because it was necessary for the work I was doing at the time I rarely use it now.

I am hopeless at texting. I never text on my mobile as it would take me twice as long to send a message. I don't know all the signs, symbols and abbreviations so I have to use full length words. I must learn how to text, then I wouldn't be worried so much about my spellings. I wouldn't get annoyed at others who text but sometimes I have to read their messages a couple of times to get the meaning of what they are saying.

It is only annoying in certain contexts, such as when someone comes into a chat room and yells "A/S/L" or something witless and rude like that. It is bad enough when they do it once, but getting no responses then sometimes they will repeat it insistently and then finally want to know why one has not answered. Then I say "Because it is none of your business!"
But things like LOL and BRB and TYVM are just standard vocabulary now, and one has to grow with the times to a certain extent, no?

Hi twoey68,
I too hate people who use text language on Mylot, this is not a cellphone and I don't use my cell much only for emergency like you and I can't understand why people text here, is it because they too lazy to type in the correct word? but spellings aren't too good but I do try and use correct words, no I don't like textings on Mylot.

I use to do texting alot and now I don't do it as much. But I will text my husband when I need something and he is at work. Well, he should be working instead of texting me.But I totally agree that texting does get kind of annoying and people do texting in the weirdest place. I know that I would be able to live without my cell phone, I don't need to have it with me all the time.

I never use text speak on MyLot, I always make sure that I type properly on the internet. I do, however, text an awful lot. The only reason that I use text speech on text messages is so that I can fit more in before it charges me for two messages.
It's important to type properly online though, you should want to have a good quality discussion.
