I was having breakfast with my friend at about 6.40pm that day. It was at a Tim Sum eatery and I ordered scallop congee and some coffee for myself. My friend and I shared some siew mai and carrot cake. It was the first time I ate there and the food was surprisingly decent and reasonably priced. My friend was in a rush so right after I gulped down my thankfully-cooled coffee, I signaled a waitress and asked for the bill. I took out a piece of tissue and was wiping my mouth when my friend suddenly bolted off. Apparently he had decided to go to the cashier to settle the bill himself. Then I recalled that the past times I had dined with him, he would always prefer to pay this way. Whereas for me, I rather have the bill brought to me. Do you have a preference for settling your bill? Would you ask for the bill or pay at the cashier? Do share your thoughts! :D

Did you mention carrot cake? Sorry Wiz I got totally sidetracked by the mention of carrot cake, I am anyone's for a slice of carrot cake, I hope it had walnuts in it, yum, I just fancy a bit, of carrot cake that is, as for paying the bill, well I much prefer the waiter or waitress comes to my table, that way I can give them a cash tip and know that they are getting it, whereas if you pay at the desk if anyone is around you don't know if they have to put it in the till or share it or it goes direct to the owner!

Yes I did, carrot cake. Not the dessert type, mind you - there are 2 different kinds. This one I ate was more for meals and not desserts. OIL is used. Those focusing on abs tend to avoid it like the plague. I like both types though. Charms said "try me". Is she now a carrot cake? I don't mind trying actually. *acts innocent*

I remember once when I asked for my bill 3 times before I got it. Needless to say, I was so fed up and had such a bad impression of the place. If I had not been an honest fellow, I would have just walked out without paying!

Whenever that happens to me, I look to see if the waiter/waitress is really busy (for an excuse not to bring it), & if he/she isn't, then I raise my voice JUST enough to catch his/her attention, & say, "Well, my friend, guess the food's FREE, here. Let's go." Amazing how fast the bill appears, then. ;o) Maggiepie

I would rather have the bill brought to me, since in any case I will be billed for the service charge. You can also see from this the service of the waiter/waitress and whether their professionalism would encourage to go back to dine at the restaurant again. However there was one incidence whether I was billed before the food was served because there was too much crowd for the restaurant to handle with its limited staff.

My point too hehe. We are paying for the service so why should we still go over to the cashier ourselves and pay the money?

If I'm dining out with you, I will bolted off somewhere and leave you to settle the bill, lol! "naughty bunny"Um, breakfast at 6:40PM???I normally split the payment when dining out with friends. Though my best friends always insisted they will shoulder the payment, I was too embarrassed to give in to their whims. Coming from a Chinese family, I noticed they love to play fencing when settling the bills. They never even bothered to check on the receipt, just threw in their cards or wads of money.

I was out with a friend and he needed to rush home by 8pm. I didn't have breakfast but we wanted to go a few places (in the end, we didn't manage to go to all anyway). In fact, we skipped the last place so that we can have some food. Yes we went dutch. He may have gone to the cashier to pay first but I paid me my share. It is great if you are among generous friends. Of course it is great to have money yourself so that you can afford to be generous.

Over here, it is almost if not always pay after your meal. You can opt for them to bring your bill to you, or you can settle it yourself at the cashier. It is only for buffets might you be asked to pay first.

I guess you and your friend were playing the game of "who gets the credit or debit card out first" and he won. That is what happens with us. Usually it is my husband, or our sons, and when the hostess brings us the bill, the first one who gives her the credit card wins. We prefer it that way , although it depends. Some places we have to go to the cashier.

It is you who misunderstand. Usually when I am with my friend, it is on either her or my birthday and something around that date. If it is her birthday I pay, if it is mine, she pays. Most of the time when I am out it is a special occasion and one of the guys pays for the dinner. Us women do not pay at all. When I was single, I did pay my share, but so did my other friends. But now that I am married and we all go out, the guys pay because they make most of the money, and we women usually pay for the groceries, and other things. So what happens when lets say my husband and I, my son and daughter-in-law, my other son and his fiancé, my brother-in-law and his wife are there, and it happens to be my brother-in-law's birthday. Then what happens is that my husband and both my sons reach for their credit cards as fast as they can so they can be the one treating everyone. Then is the complaints because the ones who did not get their credit cards out fast enough really wanted to treat everyone. And then we wait until the next birthday, anniversary, etc is around so to reciprocate.

Geez, no! In case you misunderstand, I paid him my share after we left the place. I choose my friends carefully. We usually prefer paying more than less. Instead of someone trying to get away with paying, it is more common that when splitting the bill, the guy paying would round down the individual sum so that he ends up paying more. Sometimes, we would volunteer to treat the rest too. We certainly don't try to get away with a free meal.

I really don't think it makes a difference as long as it is paid..maybe your friend wanted to pay for your breakfast as well, so he took off to pay...I have done it both ways.some places bring you the bill and other places you go pay as you are leaving..

Geez, it seems that quite a few people have misunderstand that I was trying to get a free meal. Holy no! Just to set the record straight, I paid my friend my share after we left the eatery.

I have always thought it to be customary for the waitress/waiter to bring the bill to the table. I then take the bill to the till unless I have cash and the waitress offers to take the money at the table.

It would be nice if wait staff was paid at least minimum, and did not have to rely on tips. I have worked as a waitress and managed to always have enough tips to bring my hourly rate up to triple the current rate, but that was not in the area where I live now.

Yup, it is usually the cash. But whether I am paying by cash or card, I will still put it in the leather folder and the staff will then take it to the cashier and bring back my receipt, change (if I am paying by cash) and card (if I am paying by cash) and ask for my signature (if I am paying by card). PS.: We don't practise tipping here and it is in fact discouraged.

personally, I prefer to ask for the bill. In fact, I get rather annoyed at proper restaurants that don't bring the bill to my table. Din tai fung is one of them. I know that this saves time for the waiters and waitresses, but after all, I am charged 10% service charge, and surely this can include getting the bill brought to my table so i don't have to queue and stand to wait to make payment! The same goes for japanese restaurants such as sakae sushi and ichiban boshi. tsk. some people prefer to go pay at the counter because they feel that it saves them time too. you could wave to a waitress for the bill, and only get it a very long wait later because they are collating a set of bills so that one person can walk around with a huge stack and dish them out, and then it takes longer for them to collect your credit card, and then get you to sign it and then process and return it again. for small coffeeshops like toast box or ya kun or what you seem to have experienced, I don't mind going up to pay since it's a small amount and not quite a full lunch or dinner. and usually those places don't have service charge anyway since you have to queue to make your order and pick up your food anyhow. :)

tsk tsk - You are in the running for best response!
Exactly I agree! Din tai fung is a restaurant, no? I quite like that place (I don't know why but I love their fried rice and beef noodles. In fact, I find their tim sum only so-so). I can't understand why we need to bring our bill to the cashier ourselves. Their service is usually great so why can't they add this in? Maybe they don't know the local culture well enough to know customers actually like to have their bills brought to them. And yes, for those dealing with small amounts, I can understand about going to the cashier ourselves. Sometimes we have to order at the counter anyway then it makes sense to just pay on the spot.

I like to get the bill ahead of time so i can decide how i'm paying and on a tip. I then like to take the bill to the cashier to pay. Sometimes if you want to pay at the table i find you wait alot longer for the waiter or waitress to come back.

When it comes to restaurant bills, I would prefer to pay the bill at the register. There have been many occasions when I am ready to leave a restaurant after I have finished a meal but can't because I'm still waiting for the server to bring me the bill. I understand they are busy at times and feel it would be easier on both myself and the server if they did not have to worry about delivering the bill to the table. Also, at places where the server does bring the bill to the table, sometimes I feel it is brought too soon. I am left wondering if they are just doing that so they don't forget later or if they are trying to rush me out to get their next tip.

If a particular restaurant provides too questionable a quality of service, the food would have to be really good to tempt me back.

Most places here either has a cashier or brings the bill to the table, and you can't do both. So I guess I kind of prefer the having the bill brought to me so I can settle up in the comfort of my table rather than waiting in some line to settle up.

Oh. There is always a cashier at the restaurant. But if we ask for the bill, a waiting staff would have it printed out at the cashier then bring it to us while we shove over our card or cash and so on. If we walk to the cashier ourselves, then we have to point to which table we were at if there is not visible table number which can be kinda troublesome which is why I prefer asking for the bill (and yes, the eatery I mentioned in the discussion did not label their tables).

I normally prefer to have the bill brought to me. Unless I cannot wait to go off, I will go straight to the cashier. It is one good signal if the company I am in can catch it. Though rare, I do go to the counter so that no one will "rush" to pay with me. I prefer not to owe people favours. LOL.

It really doesn't matter to me how my bill is given or if I go to the cashier unless I'm with someone that can't be trusted to pay their part of the bill. In that case I'd ask for two separate bills to be made one of myself and one of the other party otherwise, it doesn't matter how I recieved the bill.
