Posting links in discussions

I have come across several users who are saying that link posting of any sort in a discussion is prohibited and will get it deleted. Frankly I'm quite exasperated. I have pointed out that MyLot allows you to post links instead of just tweaking it's code to disallow link-posting, I have pointed out that the MyLot discussion guidelines actually states in the "Dos" to "make sure to post useful links in discussions when necessary to provide authoritative guidance or to refer to a third party article", but it seems there are still quite a number of people who heard from a friend who heard from a friend that link posting is not allowed. For those of you who have been told that link posting is prohibited, who did you hear it from?

I agree that it is not good to blatantly post referral links and say something like 'please join my program'!
There are many more subtle methods of doing this, like a 'breadcrumb trail' to get people to look at hat ou want them to see, and if the link is relevant, I think it's ok to post it.
For instance, if the discussion is called 'How can I make money online?', surely it's relevant to link to a site you have found useful?

I am not aware of there being any issues with posting links to support a response or a topic and have done it many times myself. Referral links though I am sure are a different matter entirely. Posting a link to an article for example that backs up your own comments is perfectly acceptable and certainly doesn't casue any copyright issues because it is a link to the actual information source. All I can suggest is that you don't post referral links or links to innappropriate sites and all should be fine.

This topic seems like more trouble than it's worth for you. It's not worth the frustration or the battle in semantics when it seems like you really were looking to find a way to be helpful.
