Very often when there is a senseless crime committed by younger people, the television or the music they listen to is blamed. I personally think ( andthis is just my opinion) that this is a total cop out on behalf of the parents, the police and the media. It takes away the responsibility form the criminal and basically says that they are not in control of their actions, when they clearly know the difference between right and wrong, what do you think? Do you think the media is responsible?

Parents and the child are to blame. The child picks who that are friends with. Parents should try when they are with the child to let them know right from wrong, but also when some kids are with friends they act diff. then and home, but NO TV shouldn't be blamed. Parents should also know every thing they do the kids are seeing it so they are learning what their parents do.

No, I don't blame the TV, I blame the parent. It has come to my attention that there is a severe lack of parenting in the US these days. The current generation of kids are being parented by TV and video games. Does this mean the TV and video games are to blame? No, it's the parent, who doesn't make time for their kids any more. Who doesn't show them what's right and wrong, who LETS them watch rated R movies in 2nd grade. I agree that blaming the TV and video games is a total cop out.

well said, if you cant make time to look after your kids and teach them the basics of right and wrong, you shouldn't have had them! They need a parent, not an electronic babysitter

I think that people need to stop blaming tv, music, video games and movies, for all the violent crimes that kids & teens commit. It's teaching them to always pass the buck and look for a scape goat to get them out of trouble. They did the cime, they should do the time, be it in juvie, or jail...heck even house arrest could be a useful tool to rehabilitate...but it's just sad that nobody wants to make them be the ones responsible for their own actions...really sad.

Television networks put "Parental Guidance" in their programs, so I think it's the parents' job to guide and monitor what their kids are watching. With regards to music, I think not only the parents, but the outside influences as well are to be blamed.
Some children learned to hide things from their parents like CD's and DVD's that are not appropriate for them. They watch movies and listen to music together with their friends. So, sometimes it's very hard for the parents.

I totally agree with you. This is the biggest load of crap! I think its the media and societies fault for buying into this madness. I like you believe that if you are old enough to know the difference between right and wrong then you have a choice in what you do. And you also are able to know that because of something you see on tv or hear in a song is fictional. If you are that stupid why not go out and help the church as in the gospel rappers songs? Why not go to school to be a lawyer, cop or judge as on TV? Clearly that person has both right and wrong portrayed in the media and entertainment, why choose the wrong, if you know the difference?

Actually I blame that it is a combination of factors, and that you cannot blame it just on the parents or media or the television. I think if the parents taught the child right from wrong, then if the child goes and commits a horrible crime, then the young person is to blame.
In some cases, the parents tell the child that it is all right to hurt people if they hurt you, but that puts us down to their level and that is wrong. Even if you are a direct descendant of Adolph Hitler, one of the major bad guys of all time, it gives young people no excuse. And the Tv and music should not be blamed. In fact, it brought out what was already in their hearts. It just justified what they did and if they really listened to the music it was because the singer knew of a horrible crime and was singing about it, and if they watched the show, they would have seen that the criminal was caught and executed.

Hello 3cardmonte,
To be honest I think it is the media and voilent computer games and violent tv films are to blame are to blame, where do you think they learn to be violent and even to kill? they don't think nothing of it to hurst another person and sometime even the parents are to blame because they are young themselves and are voilent and kids learn from them, thats is just my opinon.

I don't think it's right to just point a finger at a particular source because it's convenient for the less involved parents. Parents need to be involved in their children's lives, know who their friends are and what they are up to.
I also have my beliefs on certain police (they are not all good) and the media's portrayal of what is the norm is just demented. Everything is so different from even when I was a child with the interent access, television programs, movies, music, cartoons and even magazines. They all portray something that is unrealistic and have no family values anymore.
Every person with even an average I.Q. knows the difference between right and wrong. It's the parents job to instill the right values, morals and belief system to teach children to be responsible and know that there are consequences when you do something wrong.

This discussion just brought to mind something I read earlier. A 4 year old boy tried to hang himself because of a cartoon he saw. He thought it something funny...the maid found him before any damage had been done. My first thought was.."where were the parents?"
Is it the parents fault for allowing him to watch Tom and Jerry and not realizing that it was "pretend"?

I think it is quite ridiculous how games and tv are blamed. I watched violent shows at times but I did not go out and do them because I knew they were wrong. The problem is that a lot of parents arn't parenting anymore thye let there kids sit around and watch tv and play whatever they want, honestly so many parents have no control over their children. The media isn't to blame its the parents and their children.

parnets and the kids are to blame. tv, music and vedio games aren't to blame for what kids do. i used to let my kids watch, listen and play games they wanted too, but i made sure to let them know if you start living your life by the songs, tv or games that's it no more.
one day one of my was listening to this song that was prefering to female as bit&& and hoes, so i broke the cd, nope that isn't happening, then they were listing to the ice t song cops killer, that got broke too.
but i don't kind blame tv for some of racest issues that goes on in this world. they blow things up way too much. because of tv that one thing happen last year got so blown up from tv that just cause so much problmes around the country. i don't teach or belive in raail trash. the only i think tv is bad for.
but i have nephews who will play the killing games, and get straight a and never been in any kind of trouble with the law or in school

It is completely irresponsible for television and music to be blamed for what young people do! It is the responsibility of the parents to raise their children. To teach them right from wrong, to inform them from a very early age that what they see on tv is "pretend", and if you do that in real life, someone will be badly hurt, or worse yet, die. They must be taught that if you do these things, there are consequences. It is not up to our law enforcement, teachers or ministers to teach our children the most basic rules of humanity. Yes, we should work in conjunction with each other, but the basic responsibility lies with the parent(s), not the music or television industries.

I think it's not the fault of the tv when people commit crims adapted from the shows, tv show like CSI, criminal minds, and other crime shows has the ideal of letting the police and let them prepare what will happen next and a precaution needed to be taken.

I would differ from crimes being blame by TV.
Rather, i think that crimes would often blame on computers. People copy games like GTA and lead them into crimes similar to the game. So overall, i doupt media is to be blame, rather the advance technology of computers which have reached these days.
So everyone must beware !

No i do not blame the TV. Although it does have some influence it ultimately up to the person to choose what he or she wants to do.
