I needed a walking stick/cane

For years I have wanted a nice walking stick for those days that I go somewhere and end up walking all day long. Well I finally got it and it cost me nothing. At the RenFest this Saturday with my neice and her roommate I made a comment about wanting one for years while we looked around at this wood crafting shop there. Well I told my neice I'd have to make sure to save the $20 for it to buy it later. Then she said she'd buy it. But her roommate piped in wanting to buy it right then for me. I couldn't and didn't argue with him. I let him buy it for me after looking at maybe 50 styles of sticks. Now I've finally got my 6 foot walking stick. This is made from a cypress tree branch and hand carved etc. Leather starp with 3 beads made from some type of reptile bones I was told as well. All done there at the renFest show. I love it and it sure helped out walking all day Saturday. Do you own a walking stick? Is it made from Cypress Trees as well?

hiGrandpa Bob nope not a pretty walking stick. I have a quad
cane of metal with four feet that is not a bit pretty but
at least makes me feel more secure walking. You see after
'a bad fall that smashed my left shoulder bones so badly
I became bionic woman hatley with a shoulder joint replacement, I became really frightened to walk anywhere, lest I fall again. if I fell and landed on my expensive shoulder it would mean more
surgery, and the last my insurance did cover but it was mind
boggling 86,000 dollars. so you can see why I do not want to
fall again. I had already had a bad leg with a brace for years but never thought I would ever fall, but I did. and it was all so stupidly silly. I was coming downtown for breakfast out, sat down ona bench beside my favorite restaurant, got up, saw something on the sidewalk I thought I would step around, went up on a slight slope of concrete but it was all slimy from stuff that they had waashed out of the back of the restaurant. I started to turn, tripped and fell just like that. I sat up and could not push myself up to my feet using my left arm. I could not lift my left arm so I knew right thenI was in big trouble.A lady and her husband had just arrived, saw me fall and immediately called 911 then came over to see if they could help. I was utterly embarrassed and still thought at that time I had just dislocated my shoulder. and told that to the paramedics who said we dont want to leave you walking around, let us take you and have you checked out at the hospital. so good thing I listened to them. thats why now I use that stupid quad cane when I go out, I never use it inside the house, and probably I dont even need it. mostly physcological. that is misspelled I am sure. lol.

My dad has one of those four footed canes as well, but his is a hiny black metal. His walker is a Crimson red as well. Did you ever contact the restaraunt about paying for the bill or part of it due to their stuff on the ground etc? No need to have been embarrased. But I totally understand you being so though.

I used to have a walking stick. I am not sure where it got off to... It was about my height came in handy for all sorts of things.. I think that everyone should have one. You never really know how much you can do with one,, till you try walking with one!

Grandpa needed a walking stick? With your boisterous nature, who needs one.
No one in my family had past the age of 50 yet so I really can't say much about cane. However, I tend to use the long umbrella as my cane and it does feel good.
I often mimic an old lady walking with my umbrella in front of my girls. This reminds me they should buy a cane of gold for me in the future.

Mostly just needed it for support when walking is all. I have a deep blood blister in my right heel and it hurts walking on it. So the walking stick helped ease the weight off that heel actually. But I've wanted one for a long time anyhow. I've used an umbrella before as a walking stick as well when I've gone to the car races etc. I felt so british for some reasopn those times. One made from gold? Hmmmm? Now that I would never get as a gift. Hahaha!

Oh goodness, try to refrain from walking too long. Wait until your sores subsided. Take some extra Vitamin C or better, pure Ascorbic acid as this can be pretty helpful in curing any sores faster. And oh yea...a cane of gold...that's going to make me famous, lol!

How awesome is that stick! I've always wanted a stick, but sadly, I need more of a crutch for any distances. I always wanted one really cool one with lots of stuff on it, maybe even bead stuff for it myself.
My day will come - or maybe I should say, my cane will come....

That was really nice of your nieces friend to do that for you and also for your niece to offer to get it for you. I am sure you are very happy with it. I never thought about Cypress Trees and canes. I used to live where there were many cypress trees. haha

My husband is supposed to be making me, and him, one each. His of course would be longer. We actually took a branch off of one of our maple trees, so when we are done we will have nice ones. My daughter had one she had made, but I do not know if she kept it. She actually used it as a prop for a sermon she preached outside, at college. The cypress one will be very durable. Nice of him to buy it for you.

When you talk about walking sticks i remember my grandpa.. who use to have walking stick just to rise the stick and touch the person walking in the front to ask something he never uses it to hold the ground but he just use it for style purpose later days when he became even more old he fell on the ground and got hurt when he performed such actions.. my poor old grandpa.. now a days he is not able to walk fast he is sitting one place..Your niece and her friend , both are so sweet that they were ready to buy you a stick and yes it really good when you liked the material thruough which it was made..

They are mostly used just as a light support for walking. Not for true total support as a cane or crutches. So mine is used just to ease the pressure on my feet is all. Thanks, they were both great. My neice always pays my way to the renFest each year. I don't drink and she loves to get drunk there so I am her sober cab. Hee hee.

When I see people using walking sticks, I immediately think of those kung fu guys. He he he! Maybe you could learn to use it kung fu style too just for the heck of it. LOL! I am glad you got the cane that you wanted for years Grandpa Bob. Happy postings!

Nahhh. I am a peaceful man not a fighting man.
Let someone else clobber others with a stick.
I'll use mine for long walks.

This is basically for just the support to lean on when walking. Not a cane as thought but a walking stick for support and looks I guess. Someday soon I'll be needing a true cane I fear. hahahaha!

That's a cool walking stick.
Personally, with my bad back and knee, I've been wanting a cane. But...when I look at them in stores, there are different lengths and I'm not sure - nor are the store employees - how long it's supposed to be. I've been thinking I'll have to visit a medical supply store.

It should be long enough that when you hold it there is a slight bend in your elbow but not too much. Enough that when you place your arm forward with the cane the cane still reaches the ground. But ask them at a medical supply company to be positive.

This is Cool that your daughter's friend bought it for you, and you now own one. I have a friend who used to collect walking sticks and used to save up to buy one every yr. around here when we had those type of shows. I personally do not own one, but have considered wishing I did the days that I hurt more. Hope you enjoy yours, and Thanks for posting the picture of it as well.

He wants to be a couple with her and she has told him NO. I think he was trying to get on my good side. I called my wife saying I have a boyfriend that is buying me gifts. She laughed when I explained. HAHAHAHA! I love this walking stick.

That was very nice of your niece's roommate to buy you the walking stick. I personally have never owned a real walking stick, but sometimes when I am out in the yard I will pick up a fallen branch and walk with it like you would a walking stick. I used a shovel as a walking stick this past winter on the ice walking out to the mailbox a few times.

Thanks. Well a branch is still a walking stick.
Just not a fancy one is all. Hee hee!
I've never used a shovel for that purpose though. Hahaha!

I am going to get a rubber piece for the bottom some day soon.
