Your the grandma, you get to spoil him (within reason). Go for the fun stuff, not the practical. Legos are always good (they are stealth educational because they teach creativity and let the kid use imagination).

My nephew loves his legos. He builds whatever the kit is first, then takes it apart and builds his own thing. I just get him gift certificates now so he just buy the bricks rather than the kits.

Chances are good that he doesn't really need anything. He won't appreciate clothes even though mom probably would. And if he's anything like my grandson, he already has more toys than he needs. I would suggest something like a savings bond that you put in a box with a huge bag of m&ms or something. He'll like the candy, and Mom will appreciate the bond. Another thing my mother did for her great grandchildren was to start a trust fund for them. For holidays she buys them little things but puts most of the money she wants to spend into these funds for college.

Oh, you're going to take him shopping. That's easy, then. He'll know exactly what you should buy him.

I would say give him cash like 10$ in 1$ bill. Take him to the Credit Union. Make him put the money in the bank in his account. Explain how money grows if you put it in the bank. You can also buy him Bonds. These are the things he would really appreciate you when he grows up. You would also be teaching him how to save.

A Toy, clothes he won't be able to play with so a toy would be much better. Cars, Trucks, legos things in the nature he would probably like

Dont buy him an outfit! I think toys make better birthday presents for 7 year olds! What about a book about the planets, dinosauers or some Lego.
