When I was little, I had the impression that Smart people all wear glasses. It then followed in my tender mind that I will look Smarter with a pair of spectacles.
Well, I am not sure if wearing spectacles did make me Smart(er)... but let's just say I don't have a choice of wearing or not wearing right now.
What is your opinion on spectacles? Do you feel that putting on a pair of glasses make you Smart(er)? Or do you instead link other associations with wearing glasses? Nowadays with the advent of lasik surgery, many people have taken the plunge to go "top-less". I don't feel like mutilating myself since it is not vital. What about you? Do share your thoughts on spectacles and maybe, even lasik surgery. Cheers!

I have worn glasses since age 9 which is quite a few years and also have contacts. I don't wear my contacts much anymore but did for a long time because my lenses are like coke bottle bottoms because of being severely myopic. I am bad enough that lasik surgery would not be able to get me to the point of not needing glasses at all. I really hate wearing glasses but am at an age now where vanity, which is a part of why I got contacts, isn't a big thing for me.

I feel like if I were to have lasik,I would be the one who had a bad experience. I have worn glasses for fifty years. I would miss having them. I do not know if I am smarter when they are on, but I listen better. I will even tell people, "I cannot hear you, until I have my glasses on."

Thanks GardenGerty, my kids laugh at me when I say I can hear better with my glasses on, glad to meet someone who understands.

I think perhaps the glasses put you in a different kind of mood - maybe receptive, or you observe things better... you listen better.

This lasik thing is such a big question mark. I have encountered both rave and bad reviews on it.

I got my first spectacle late last year. It was that time when my eyes were completely glued to my monitor because I was hopelessly addicted to mylot. I bought the cheapest frame and when I stared at the mirror, I did not look smarter. "pout" More like Ms. Terror from my High School days.
With the rising trend of spectacles in different designs, I got more and more confused as to which one suited me. I will try this one, I look like a nerd. The other one made me ten years older.
I knew of one friend who went into Lasik surgery. She was wearing spectacles since Elementary and had only one word to tell me: relief. One of the reason she took the surgery was that even with the highest eye prescriptions, her visions is still somewhat blurry.

I don't know if I had perfect eyesight before purchasing the spectacles. I only wore the specs for about 2 months. Up until now, I did not bother to wear it again. My vision is fine and can read clearly. :)
What kind of information were they asking? I think it is the usual SOP like age you started wearing specs, medical history, some kind of agreement or something.
Eye consultation is also free here. You are not compelled to buy any eye glasses but the optometrist and the staff will surely sweet talk you into buying a new one. How will they earn money if no one is buying any specs at all. :)

Are you serious? You mean you had perfect eyesight before this?
There was one site recommended by some myLotters here that sell really cheap glasses online. But the thing is, they ask so many details about my eyes that I have no idea how to make a purchase.
Over here, if you want to do a simple test to know how many degrees you have, you need to pay unless you promise to buy the specs from the shop you did the check with. It used to be free but opticians have grown disgusting and smelly recently.

I don't have a choice of Not wearing.
Some guys look very intellectual and smart with their spectacles on.
I do not think wearing spectacles can make a person Feel smarter. It only makes the person Look smarter and more intellectual.
I do not have the privilege to wear one and hope never to have.
2 of my friends went through lasik. Initially, their eyesight were perfect but after a while, their eyesight start to deteriorate. It's important to take good care of the eyes. If a person sticks to old habits after the lasik operation, the eyesight can deteriorate and he may have to wear spectacles again.

Wearing spectacles might make some people look smarter but it certainly wouldn't make them any smarter as in the sense of being clever. Some people, however, look just as bad with specs as without! (or just as good)
I wouldn't like the idea of laser surgery though. Well, I have perfect vision so it's not something I need to consider but I have heard of some awful stories about people losing their sight completely and other nasty things.

Well, as I'm really smart anyway, I wouldn't need specs or anything else to make me feel any smarter.

Sometimes when we "think" we are smarter, we somehow free ourselves and tap onto our potential to be smarter.

Basically I wear spectacles to protect myself from Sun and ultra-voilet rays, but I do feel that wearing it ehances my ourwardly appearance and I look smarter. Wearing dark glasses always feels great and one can look at others, without they knowing about it.........LOL!

I wear glasses, when I need them. I wear them to drive, I wear them to read but I am not wearing them at this moment.
My mother wore glasses, my dad wore them to read and drive like I do, maybe for the same reason?
I guess I never thought glasses and smart, probably more glasses and geeks - and glasses and adults.

I would say the spectacles is a visual aid to help one to see better.
In the past when I was a kid, you can safely assume that one is a smart kid when he is wearing spectacles cos there is no such thing as a computer console to stare at all day.
And the only time a person will get short-sightedness is due to excessive reading in poor light conditions.
Now a days, kids are all constantly staring at the computer.
During their free time, they would be staring at either a gameboy, or a PSP, all at close ranges.
Eyes how not to spoil? Couples with longs hours staring at the small little screen to complete the game. The eyes of kids these days are going through so much more strain and stress compared to when we were kids.
So looking at a kid who is wearing a spectacles right now, it is not necessary the result of hard work or reading... but the possibilities of it due to staring too long at a game console as a result. Agree?

Wearing spectacles definitely makes me smart because I can see where I am going clearly and do stuff properly. heheheheh!!!!! But to wear spectacles just to look smart....nope. I wish I don't have to wear specs. Of course there's contact lenses and the lasik thing which you mention. But no way I am never gonna spend money on lasik and the only time I wore contact lense was during my wedding day. Had to go without specs during the whole ceremony. And that was it no more contact lenses.

Hello lordwarwizard;
I like this question.
When I was about 8 years old, I thought my uncle looked GREAT in his solid black rims. I wanted to look just like him. So I asked my mother if I could have glasses? Of course she said: "Only people who have something wrong with their eyes, need to wear glasses. Your eyes are perfectly fine. You don't need glasses."
OH? Then in my little mind, I figured that if I was going to get a pair, then somehow my eyes would have to become bad. I started crossing them...constantly.
Within about 2-3 months I needed glasses for my short-sightedness. I was soooo pleased!
I'm in my 57th year now, and just last January received my newest pair of
bi-focals.
Smarter? I don't think so.
Not only that...but my uncle has now gone to that great glasses shop in the sky.

I used to have a pair of spectacles when i was taking my college courses. I look smart, and I feel smart. LOL! It helps a lot. My teacher once said I am smart, its because I studied well and have good grades.
When I graduated my college course. I decided not to wear them. I eat a lot of pumpkin. And always look at green trees, green plants from afar.
When I returned to my eye doctor for a yearly check up my eye grade decreased. Up to now, I don't wear spectacles.
I learn how to take care of my eyes. I rest every 30 minutes from looking at my monitor screen. And I don't read pocketbooks while I'm on bed. It must be on a sitting position with enough lights.

I never thought that waering spectacles made me smarter. I hated wearing them. I was so glas when my eye doctor told me when I got older I could wear contacts. I am not sure if I could afford lasik surgery although it would be nice. At the same time with me hacing ms I have also had double vision and I have also lost vision in my eyes a few times. Luckily only one eye at a time and my vision has came back.

When i was only a child,i have the same opinion with you!I admire the people who wear glasses. They looks like sapiential and smart. Most of my teacher wear spectacles. At that time,my eyes were so good.It was hard to make it short sight.I read books in dark environment or bended over the floor.Till senior middle school,i have no need to wear spectacles. But now my outlook brighter, but i am so sad.I know it is not comfortable to wear glasses. The bridge of a nose will low.expression in your eyes will look like unlight.Without glasses,i can't see clearly.Sometimes,i will misknow the person. It troubles me so much.So now i protect my eyes,I want it will be better.

Yeah, I also have that kind of notion when I was a kid, thinking that all people who wear glasses are smart and geeky. But now, I don't think it will make me smarter wearing one. I'm wearing glasses since I was in college, but if only my eyes wasn't that poor and I badly needed to wear one, I wouldn't like to wear it. It was quite uncomfortable wearing it. However, I am thinking of buying contacts someday, but some said that contacts are not that good and glasses are still better. About lasik surgery, not only it was expensive, I feel scared as well undergoing with it. So, for now, I temporarily go with my glasses.

i dont think wearing a spectacle will make u look smarter unless it is apt.it is meant for getting a proper vision and not for others purposes.moreover u should take care of the spectacle wen go out every time and also u change the glass once in a 2 yr.so it is addition work in keeping it safe...
