someone else's? My husband only collects his. His brother collects his own and some of the one from the employee room where he works. I do my own plus some on the side of the road.
Someone told me to wear gloves and not to collect ones that have yellow in them. They said that sometimes truckers can't stop to go to the bathroom so they go in a bottle or can and throw it out the window. Do you think that is true, or is the person just trying to scare me?

I believe the yellow bottles tossed could be from any driver who doesn't want to stop. I would avoid those and move on. Better safe than sorry. We recycle our bottles and cans. Years ago I bought a can crusher and it was fun for awhile. Our kids loved to crush them also. Then we had the house sided and don't have a clue what happened to the can crusher. It's easier for us to recycle them even though there is a charge to do so.

You are right. It could be Mountain Dew but I wouldn't run the risk of touching it. Yucky! If Missouri has a return per bottle or can, I don't know about it. It's just too much of a hassle and we don't drink many bottles of anything when at home. I'll get Pepsi once in awhile but that's about it.

True and sometimes you think you're picking up a perfectly intact bottle and then your realize it's broken as you're picking it up and it cuts you. Thanks and take care.

I used to collect my own soda cans since I figured I'd get my money back for the taxes on them. I would suggest gloves, you never know about the pee in the cans. Even if it isn't, it's still a good idea to always wear gloves.

Yeah, you never know what diseases the person could have had. Or the skunks that licked them, or whatever. Thanks and take care.

Well, we save our cans for the roomie's dad.
I have heard that truckers do that, but you can just open them and dump them out - if you are wearing gloves - and they are right about that anyway - there shouldn't be a problem.
We save our bottles and other than soda cans for the city recycling since we don't have deposit like some states.
Starting later this year they are going to allow more kinds of plastic then they do now and even cereal and soda boxs in the dumper - GREAT!
Saving for money - if we had the deposit - I'd be saving them!

It's amazing how many states don't have the deposit. For all the deposits that aren't returned, our state gets that money. So it lowers our taxes and those of us who do return them, get a good deal twice over. Take care and thanks.

There was a homeless man in NYC who started out collecting bottles just to get a meal. Then found a couple of sacks and got enough for three meals. Then he started thinking he was onto something. So he saved money for a cart and got enough to buy a change of clothes and meals. So he started piling the bags of cans & bottles higher and tied them down with a rope, and then he could sometimes get a room at an Inn for the night for a shower-maybe once a week. Then he either found or got given to him a broken down bike that he fixed. Could cover more ground and get more bottles. He started a bank account. Eventually he got enough money to rent an appartment. So now he has a multi-speed bike, and a huge cart. He literally worked himself up from street person to that being a full-time job that covers all his needs.
Up here, in the country, lots of kids collect bottles to get presents for their parents and sometimes parents to get presents for their kids. It really helps people who need more money. I wish more states did this. Good for you when you were in Michigan!

I would think a male could hit the bottle opening better than a female and that's who he was talking about.

I collect my own, and any that people are willing to give me. Recycling is a very smart thing to do.

I collect my own bottles and cans. I use some of them to store stuff and sell some of them to the ragpicker. I do that with old newspapers too.
I don't pick up bottles and cans off the road. Indian isn't one of the cleanest countries in the world and with people using public pavements as toilets, I wouldn't want to go near any bottle or can I find on the roadside...let alone touch them!

lol...don't take it to be a literal 'ragpicker'.
This person takes all the junk (well...a few that he can sell off) and re-sells it to people who neep it.
For example, he sells the old newspaper to people who use for other stuff...like a grocery store owner who makes paper bags out of it. Or metal rods to people who can use it (automobile industry).
Anyways, I'm not bothered about where it goes as long as it's out of my house and I'm getting paid for it. They don't take all the plastic bottles. They prefer glass bottles.

Does the ragpicker make rugs? If not, what does the ragpicker do with the rags? I't's good that you can sell them and that you collect them.
I can see why you wouldn't want to pick bottles and cans off the side of the road. Thanks and take care.

I don't collect on intent but I do save my own bottles and when the time comes, I do sell them in the junk shop. But wasting time to collect bottles? Nah...

I have family members that are truck drivers and men regularly use bottles to relieve themselves in.
I used to collect cans and cash them in for extra money. With gas so high,it's just not worth the effort.
What amazes me is that the part of you discussion about truckers peeing in cans and bottles is getting more response that most discussions. Is it me or is that just a little weird?

You cashed them for money for gas, too, huh? It's not worth it for gas, but for a drink or trail mix, or something, it does pay. But yes, it was worth it for gas for awhile. I collect them while walking. Some people collect them by using their car and that is definitely not worth it. Takes more gas than they make.
Well, look at the number of words you have toward the bathroom issue and how many toward the money.
Priorities I guess.
I never know what will go for a topic on Mylot and what won't.
I do find that sometimes weird topics do better than non-weird ones. Maybe other people have had bottle collecting topics and the rest was the same and that is the only thing different. Who knows, but thanks for your response and take care.

Actually,I meant it costs too much for gas to drive to the collection center and back home. The gas would almost cost as much as the money I would make for the cans.

helps with all the pet food i have to buy. so why not. also I do beleive the peeing in the can/bottle is true. so be careful with the ones on the side of the road...

My husband's brother collects the ones people throw away at work, too. He can't believe people throw money away either. He is able to buy more things with that money, so it really, really pays for him to collect them. Thanks and take care.

We take our soda cans out to my dad's place. My folks are retired and on a pretty fixed income so he's been collecting them for a long time
He has a guy who gives him sixty cents a pound (about 24 cans) so he has sometimes gathered enough to some pretty cool things like a plane ticket to New York for my niece, a tv cabinet and even a trip to the local meat market to fill up the freezer.
Fun part is that he pours the cans out onto the driveway and runs over them with his little Mazda pick-up. They're REALLY flat and the last year or so he's been letting the youngest nephew do it - which meant learning to drive a stick so the kid's learned to drive a bit while crushing cans!!
We're, honestly, too lazy to deal with them other than stuffing them in a trash bag and hauling them out there. We COULD just put them out for the city recycling, but it helps the folks out and I LIKE doing that.

Hi writersedge.
We do keep our own bottles and cans, that we purchased and drank the contents. I rinse them out and put them out for the recycle program we have here in town. I do not pick them up along the road. I do believe there are situations when a driver on the road may use a bottle or can to go to the bathroom in. I definitely would not be picking up those cans/bottles.

Yes, I think it probably is good to wear gloves for the sake of our health and to keep bacteria, diseases and viruses away. It's also good that you collect cans and that your friends do, too. Thanks and take care.

Yuck! I used to jokingly tell my students to do it in a bottle if they keep asking to be excused to the toilet. I wouldn't be surprised if these truckers have similar ideas . Anyway, I collect my own bottles and cans, but not to make money. I just recycle them at the bins. I keep newspapers to be recycled too. The man comes along during the day and if you have newspapers to dispose, he will take them away and give you a few cents for them, depending on the weight.
