I lived in India for a year and didn't learn the Hindi language. Now I am living in Egypt and don't know the Arabic language. Not a lot of people can speak English so I'm really struggling. But I am trying my best to learn even just the basic words! How about you? Are you willing to learn another language or will you just stick to English and work it out? What language?

I think I would speak Spanish because my relatives speak it and I think my mom is talking to my grandma and she says things about me but I won't know what she is saying. Though, I would like to learn a pretty language that sounds nice, like Italian or French. Sometimes I pretend to speak French!

I have never heard of Patios, where do they speak this language? You seem to want to learn a lot of languages which is good! I would love to learn to speak a few languages as well but never seem to stay in a country long enough! Thanks for responding.

right now I am self learning irish and german. I have taken french, spanish and latin courses. If I could speak any other language it would be irish. Learning a new language is a struggle for me cause I am hearing impaired but I do try.

I pick up languages very quickly and can speak quite a few languages (including various dialects).
I can speak, read and write Arabic and a few Indian languages too (besides English).
I prefer learning the local language wherever I go and use it as much as I can...even when I can get by with English or Hindi (btw...though I am Indian, Hindi is not my mother tongue and it's a language I learnt).
hmmm...one year in India and now in Egypt? Rings a bell...I think James72(mylot) was also in India for a year and is now in Egypt.
I loved Egypt and was just wondering last week if it is the same as when I visited 26 years ago...I'm sure there must be lots of changes (which you couldn't possibly know about).

lol....the wonderful 3-in-1 lady! lol..I should have guessed but it didn't even cross my mind that his wife would be on mylot. Nice to meet you:)
I guess it's just a gift I have (picking up new tongues).
lol...I'm sure the Pyramids and the Sphinx are probably still around....I remember going inside a pyramid (I was around 6-7 years old at the time). I recently watched a Hindi movie song and it had the pyramids and the Sphinx in the background and the desert looked just the same...lol
But I was wondering about Alexandria and the wonderful churches that we visited. I'm 32 years old now and I still remember the visit and how much I enjoyed it.
Friend request accepted:) (How can I refuse James' wife?lol)

Oh my goodness SViswan. You are very, very good. James72 is my husband. Shhhhh! lol. You must be very smart to be able to learn languages so quickly. I wish it was the same for me. Yes I'm not sure what might have changed in Egypt but the Pyramids are still there! Ha ha ha. Thank you for your response and please accept my friend request.

Thank you very much for accepting my friend request . I was confused about 3 in lady, I had to wake up my husband to ask what it meant! But I know now, lol. I haven't been able to go to Alexandria! The furthest I went is El Sokhna. I have been to the Pyramids but just outside and its amazing! Hopefully I will go back to see inside them as well soon.

Interesting! I would want to learn Spanish since it would be easier for me cuz some of our words here in the Philippines were derived from the Spanish words. But I like to learn French. It seems like a very difficult language to learn. I like how it sounds and it's pretty amazing when you hear people speaking in french. It feels like they are very romantic. lol.. Maybe it's just my imagination.

Hi Cjay, I didn't know you're a filipino. hihihi... It's nice to hear from kababayans. Don't worry about you learning the arab language, I know you'll do just fine. As they say, practice makes perfect. So go ahead start practicing even if it would twist your tongue or even if your grammar is not that good yet. At least you tried. As long as they can understand you, it shouldn't be a problem, right?

Hi Cjay, Do you belongs to India. If yes, from which state. In your discussion you wrote that you lived in India only one year. During the period, which place you lived in India. I know three languages. One is my mother tongue and second is our national language and third is English. I like to learn other languages but I am lazy and these three languages are enough for me to survive. When it is a case of survival you automatically try to learn Arabic also. So try from today itself. All the best.

Hi Sreekala, I am not from India, my husband has to work there and we enjoy our one year very much! We stayed in Mumbai all year. I think that 3 languages will be fine especially if your lazy to learn more, lol. I agree when it times of survival you need to learn the language, but I find it hard to learn Arabic language, I can't even memorize the numbers which would help me a lot when I need to buy things! Thank you so much for sharing and for response.

I would like to learn more Spanish. I had an uncle who married an Argentine lady, they had three sons. He was already a teacher in England, when he met an Argentine teacher who had come to London to 'bone' up on her English. They met, moved to Argentina and set up home there. I think he was quite embarrassed when I went to visit him there, as my Spanish was not to a terribly good standard. "Me ablo un poco de Espanol" - hope that's spelt right!
It is true, that for anyone, whose native language is English, because it's the international language, it makes us very lazy to learn other languages. I never regret learning all the Spanish I did those, as it can be quite interesting, especially when in London, to overhear what Spanish speaking people are saying. Sometimes, I'm surprised how much I can understand, when they are speaking to each other!
If I was to do a lot of travelling again, would certainly make an effort, if I was dealing with one or two particular languages to learn as much as I could!

Hi dreamhealer, I can only understand a bit of Spanish because we used some words from my home country , but I cannot have conversation in Spanish! I think you spell it right, except the 'ablo' I think its abla! I heard that most people who are English speaking is quite lazy to learn other language because English is a National language, so they don't really need to learn more. I admire those people that can speak some few languages because it is not easy to learn. I wish you all the best of learning Spanish and thank you so much for sharing and for the response. Have a good day.

Well if I had a situation in front of me to where I needed to learn another language because I moved to an area where they sppke another one even though it is not easy to learn a different language I would try to learn the new language. It would be a challenge but I would try my best. Everyone is different so it just depends on how you feel.
