Do police use tasers too much?

I have been watching the show cops a lot and I've noticed that on almost every show they tase at least one person and I feel that most of the time it wasn't neccessary at all. And tasers are no joke. They hurt real bad. A taser has 50000 volts and although police claim they are harmless, there have been numerous reports of fatalities due to the use of police tasers. What do you think? Do you think that the police are power-happy or just doing their jobs? Do you think that people's rights are being violated? Or do you think that the risk is neccessary to insure the safety of police officers?
