Taking up a new interest keeps the mind young

I think that taking up a new hobby stretches the mind and makes a person feel younger. It might be keeping fit. I met an old lady at a bus stop and she told me she had joined a gym three months ago. At first she did gentle exercise and now she feels years younger with no aches or pains. I am just about to join a language class then I will be able to learn Spanish. Two years ago I thought that I wanted to do a qualification in my top hobby, an A Level in Travel and Tourism. I included my own photography in the course work and my tutor really liked my travel experience that I have done. I am a primary school teacher so I must really love learning. What are your current hobbies? Have you room for a new interest? If so what might it be?

I don't see anything wrong with taking up a new skill or hobby. I always like the game of pool and enjoy reading or writing. I am a busy stay at home mother most of the time. I think there is room to start up a new interest though. I am thinking photography or getting a new pet to keep going with and having something to do if I get bored. Traveling is something that would be nice to do if I ever came across the time.

I really appreciate your views about new concepts to undertake. No doubt if you resort to the new things certainly you will feel energetic. Being energetic means freshness and feeling young. Earlier I was involved in my routine affairs and for the last many months I have involved in surfing net and I have learned a lot new things and new innovations initiated world over. The latest I joined my lot where I have an option to talk to different people world over and express my experience on life with them. Now I am busy all the time taking some project at internet and I am feeling stout and healthy.

I definitely agree with you. It's true that we shouldn't stop learning. Its a continuous process. I love to learn new things, new skills. And our mind should always be active on things that can benefit us or others. As of now, I'm interested in learning photography, i haven't enrolled in a class yet. But thank God for the internet, i can learn and search for all stuff about photography. Hope i end up successful in my new interest! :-)

My hobby is my job which I love. I teach English to Thais, but that will cease at the end of 2009 when I retire. For my birthday last week, my wife gave me a keyboard, so that will take care of some of my extra free time. I also intend to start swimming again, an I will certainly get another dog. It's two years sinceI had a dog, and I miss the early morning walks. I hope these extra activities give me a healthy retirement.

I agree that taking on new hobbies stretches the mind and that will keep you mentally young, it does nothing to keep your body young though no matter how hard you try. My current hobbies are computers and reading. I like posting on mylot and I play computer games. I love reading books and we belong to our local library and read lots of books. I am not very active but I am also not very well. I do an exercise program to try and improve my physical fitness as much as I can. Apart from that I also keep chickens and I have a wonderful dog.

In November I am taking up a psychology course to broaden my interests and hopefully help me understand people more. I have always had an interest in psychology and finally I decided to book myself on a course, I hope to find it interesting and would like to take it further and hopefully get qualifications I can use at a later date. My main interest is bodybuilding and healthy eating at the moment and I go 5 times a week to train and I am very serious about it, it is very good for both the physical and to be mentally healthy.

I totally agree with you. Knowing and trying new things will really spice up your life. It will make one feel better and excited. In my case, I'm now into blogging. That's my new hobby. I find it very cool and mind relaxing. I just love to enjoy every minute of blogging.

Of course it does. There's o much that one could do just to stay alert. Playing an instrument is something that many people recommend. It also helps with coordination and memory skills. Playing certain video games or card games can help too. I guess reading could go on this list as well. I'm learning different languages right now, so that's keeping me busy. Along with my guitar playing of course.

Well my hobby right now is still magic and I think that since there is always something new to learn about it then it would still be a suitable hobby for me when I grow old right? Also since I have been studying languages when I was in college I think adding up to my language skills won't be half bad right? Well maybe I might start drawing again if I had the chance or to learn how to play the saxophone.

well u can say that ...... but the point is that sticking to same old interest isn't just possible....so a man has to take a different interest.... if u talk about me.....i am now trying to play cs these days....which is a kind of different interest for me am i have played it in a gaming zone....but now at my home...

I think you are right about the idea of taking up a new hobby or a new interest! I think that it has been a while since I started a new hobby and if the truth be told, I'm thinking that there's also a little fear there about trying something new. I'm quite surprised about the old lady though, it sounds like she has been eating spinich all her life! My main hobby at the moment is reading and writing. I guess this tends to keep me in isolation. I love keeping fit and that is another hobby of mine, I am a regular cyclist. I have several exercise machines within my flat and so I exercise on these on a regular basis. It's probably true that you are someone that just loves to learn. I too love learning, ok I am a bit of a late starter in life, but better late than never at all! There is something that I would like to take up as a new hobby and that is flying! But, this is extremely expensive and I just don't have the means to do it right now. Will this ever become a reality? I just don't know but I have it noted down somewhere that it's really something that I want to aim for. As you say, when you try new things I guess you feel good about yourself. Interesting discussion by the way, thanks. Andrew

I do not know about a new hobby keepiong one young. But just recently I startd to walk and ride a bike a lot more than I have in the past 30 years. I try to walk about 2 miles daily with and or without my Buster beside me. I also try to bike for about a half hour each day weather permitting. I don't feel younger but I can brathe a lot better with my asthma doing this new exercise routine. I do a lot of gardening of vegetables and fruits in my yard till fall then in the winter I sit in the warmth of my house till the snow and cold is gone. That's about it for hobbies. I have thought that this fall and or winter I may start some type of woodworking hobby. Mostly shelves etc for my basement and garage for storage etc. Funds are a tad limited though so I shall see. Thanks for this discussion as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~
