Did you have cats or dogs when you were a child?

My family always had cats when I was a child and I grew up loving them but I always wanted to get a dog. I told myself that I would wait until I was retired to get a dog but I only managed to wait until I was in my early thirties. I have two miniature poodles, called Secret and Magic. Did you have cats or dogs when you were a child? Do you continue to have a cat or a dog now you are grown up?

We always had dogs and cats when I was growing up...always at least once cat and one dog but quite often 2 cats and one dog and maybe a litter of puppies! I believe no child should grow up without a pet, particularly a dog. I am now married with 2 little boys & we have 5 dogs, we breed Jack Russell Terriers so often have lots of puppies. We also have chickens, roosters and a goose.

My family always had dogs from the time I was born. I have always had pets in my life. I cannot imagine not have dog as a friend and companion. I adore dogs and have had a few of my own over the years as well as family ones. I have had lap dogs and big dogs. My current boy is 4 now. He is too big to sit in my lap but I think he would if he could. He likes to put his paws around my neck and get a good cuddle. I have had cats as well but I never seem to get on with them the way I do with dogs. My cats have always been independent creatures who run off outside all day and just come to me for their meals. I have never had a cat that like just sitting in my lap and being patted. I have not had a cat for years. I have been thinking about getting one recently but I am not sure how a cat would work with my dog and my chickens. I have the chickens free range in the garden now and it took me a while to teach my dog not to chase them.

I had a cat when I was four, but my parents gave it away when we moved. Then I got a dog which I had thru my childhood. I also had a rabbit and a hamster for several years. Now as an adult I have too many pets. LOL I currently have three dogs and seven cats. I'm trying to find homes for several of the cats since its just too much to deal with.

We always had dogs when I was growing up. I loved romping with them, playing with their puppies, and then cried when the puppies were given away. I had this dream that someday when I grew up I would have lots of dogs and cats, and I would live in a tiny cottage near the forest or the sea. Now that I am an adult I long to have a dog, but it is impossible now that I live in a cramped apartment. If I get a dog I want her to have as much space as she needs. Maybe when I retire and move back to the countryside I will get to enjoy the company of dogs and cats again.

We never had pets at home because neither of my parents wanted pets (and neither did we). My uncle loved dogs and had many but I would ask him to keep them away from me when I was visiting. I didn't enjoy the feel of animals near me (probably I might seem wierd to animal lovers). We do not have any pets now either....my husband doesn't like them either...our older son is scared of stray dogs and he now stays away from all animals. I've got used to pet dogs because my neighbour has a pet dog. Our young one is an animal lover. He isn't talking yet....but I have a feeling he will ask for a pet when he grows up. We might get him one if he takes on the total responsibility of taking care of it.

My parents wouldn't let us have any pets when my brother and I were young. Think I was around 8 or 9 when my dad brought home a scruffy Irish Setter/spanial mix for a pet. That dog would listen long as he was on leash. Soon as he knew he was off, he was gone for hours and wouldn't come to anyone until he was ready to. My mom fed him too much greasy ground meat and he ended up dying from kidney failure or something like that. I was too young to know what exactly was wrong with him. He was our first pet. I got Briar for my 14th b-day and had him for 9yrs till I had to put him down with cancer. He was my first real pet being we bonded so close. That dog even snuck on the bus a few times to go with me to school. We had pigeons, doves, ducks, pheasants when I was a kid but I never considered them as pets being we never had them over a year before my dad would get rid of them while we were in school.

We rented homes when I was growing up, and most don't allow pets, so I did not really have pets growing up.

YEP! I had lots of cats when I was a child (different times of course, because our Adult cat(s) would always "run away") Fluffy 1, fluffy 2, fluffy 3, they all had their own set of kittens we had to give away. Now that I moved out, I have a baby cat of my very own, his 1 year birthday is actually coming up in October, the 31st actually, and my roommates are going to think I'm so weird for doing it, BUT, I want to find a specialty store that makes those little cupcakes/muffins/cakes MEANT for cats and dogs. Anybody know any in Calgary? It would be very much appreciated if you can shout it out to me on here.

We always had dogs in our family, I grew up with a cairn terrier! and he lived to the grand old age of 17 so all my childhood he was with me! It's weird you know that I was brought up with dogs, yet I don't particularly like dogs and much prefer to have cats as pets. Cats are far more independent. When I was 25 I got a cat and I have still have her, she is 14 now, so they live to a grand old age because they are loved and spoilt so much!

Hi maximax, I had two cats when I was growing up, but at different times. I also had a dog for a short while. I am a great lover of animals and still have two cats, and thinking about getting a dog. Blessings.

Being on a farm we always had several cats and one or two dogs. My mom also raised cocker spaniel puppies so we had puppies to play with as well until she sold them to a happy home. We had cows, sheep, bunnies, goats, a hedgehog, guinea pigs, pigs, All sorts of animals growing up we could have been a petting zoo. currently i now own 3 dogs (one is our male cocker spaniel we got when i was 9 - he is now 17) and 2 cats (again one is a cat we got when i was younger shes now 13)

All of my life while I was growing up my family had dogs. From the time I was about 8 until my early twenties, we actually had poodles. For at least a few months or some other relatively short period of time as a young child, we had one or two outdoor cats, but when we moved the cats did not come with us. I don't have a clear memory of them, but we do have a picture of me as a young child holding a small black kitten. When I grew up, I knew I wanted pets, but I decided that my lifestyle would be more compatible with cats than with dogs because I work during the day and cannot reliably get home to walk them and have not always had a yard. Therefore, all of my adult life, I have had at least one indoor cat and, in fact, I currently have 7 of them. Ironically, my daughter who has recently moved in with me again, has two large dogs -- pitbulls that are currently living with me as well.

I have always had dogs and cats, usually one dog at a timebut two or more cats. I love my animals and as long as I can care for them I'll have at least one.

I was raised in a family with 3 brothers, a sister, and mom & dad. We always had a dog and at least one cat. The animals always seemed to find their way to our home. I now have 4 large dogs in the back yard, 2 little dogs in the house, and 3 indoor cats. All the dogs in my yard have been animals left by their idiot owners. They just off and abandoned them. The cats I wanted. One of the inside dogs I wanted the other I inherited from an old lady where I worked. She couldn't take care of the dog anymore and the family knew I wouldn't put the little one down. My daughter is on the same track as me. She now has 3 dogs and a baby too! I guess once an animal lover always an animal lover. Oh the newest creature trying to become a part of my household is a huge wild pig. I don't think he's going to be allowed in the house or the yard. I imagine I'm going to have to call Animal Control on that beast. He's larger than my chocolate lab. Needless to say I don't have to go looking for new pets; they come find me!
