How much sleep?

How much sleep do your get per night on average? I think I get 6-8 normally. I saw a local advertisement for neighborhood clinic in my area that said for adults more than 8 hours of sleep a night [on a regular basis] can shorten your lifespan. Have you ever heard this before? xD I was surprised by it, I wonder if it's true?

Not enough! I've struggled with getting sleep since I was young. I get barely 6 hours a night, and usually not even close to that. Six hours is a good night for me. Over the years my body has adapted to not getting much sleep, so I usually function just fine on little sleep. I actually feel more tired on the rare nights I sleep well. I have tried all kinds of remedies:over-the-counter sleep aides, natural methods, you name it and I have probably tried it. I can't afford to get prescription medicine either. I don't think I really want to though. I don't want to depend on sleep meds for the rest of my life.

According to what I understand most adults are supposed to get six to eight hours of sleep per night. However, since I have a new baby at home, I am getting about 4 to five hours per night and an hour nap, if my two year old lets me. That sleep clinic is probably just trying to get people to come in so they can make more money.

I actually heard the opposite to you but again, I don't know how true it is as I have never checked it out. I heard that the older one gets, the more sleep they need and they should not just sleep for about eight hours at night but they should also have a nap during the day...just like a baby. I myself sleep for about six hours every night and whenever I get the opportunity, I like to take a nap for half an hour in the afternoon. I'm getting on in years and I wouldn't mind getting a lot more sleep.

If that were true I will live to be 100. the only time I get more than 8 hours of sleep is when I am sick. A " good night sleep" for me is 3-5 hours of sleep.

I usually try for 8, but I think I'm probably closer to 7 most nights. I hope that it's not true that more than 8 hours of sleep will shorten your lifespan! My fiance likes to sleep about 10 hours or more a day, if I don't wake him up. And they say that children need a lot of sleep, so it seems odd that adults would not. I would think that less than 8 hours of sleep would be the hazardous way to go, from everything I've heard on the subject.

Well, My average of hours of sleep is about six. I work fulltime and I have a 17 years old son with ADHD and AUTISM. I am a single divorced mother, I have to go up early every morning weekdays and weekends, my profession is a assistence nurse for geriatric care. My working days is all day´s of the years. I work day´s, and evenings. I have to wake my son up every weekday so he will be at school at the right time. I have no problems sleeping. And when I have a day of, I always sleep one hour during the day. You need to get your energy some where from resting.

I guess the thing is there's a limitation for everything that is in excess or in shortage. 8 hours of sleep is enough and when you get more than 8 hours, remember we need to furnish our body with food and water and we fail to do so, the system inside our bodies tend to cope which might be quite bad. :)

I try my very best to get between 7 and 8 hours of sleep every day. If I don't get that much sleep, I tend to get very tired and sleepy before the end of my shift at work. On my days off, though, I'll stay up as late as possible before I go to bed on my first day off. Then I'll sleep from late afternoon 'til very early morning. Then my second day off, I'll go to bed about a few hours later than my regular bedtime. I work overnights, so I go to bed between 11 a.m. and noon.

Averagely, I would get about 7-9 hours of sleep regularly because that tends to help me wake up fresh and awake. I've seen a lot of programs that are dedicated to sleep and how it affects even your immune system. It's actually surprising the long-term affects oversleeping and not sleeping the normal hours that a human should sleep. Anyways, I've never heard about oversleeping can shorten your lifespan but that's not good news because my sister oversleeps a lot and I'll look more into this statement and see if it's a fact.
