Help, I am trying everything to keep my cat from running out the house when I come in. I do not want him to get hurt if he runs out, and I am scare he won't know the way back if he gets lost. What are some tips and techniques for keeping him indoors?

One of my cats will always run to the door when it is opened. My husband has the habit of standing with the door open when he is telling someone good bye after visiting. I am always yelling close the door, even though there is another closed door before you get outside. Jake has gotten out quite a few times, but then again, I have a second closed door before you get to the street.
One morning, when I was going to work, my husband left out before me, to start the car. I started out and forgot something and went back inside, silly me, I did not close the first door all the way. When I went to the door I saw it opened, and low and behold my husband did not close the second door to the street. To my dismay, I saw jake standing outside on the porch. My heart dropped, I did not want to alarm him, and have he run towards the street. I quickly went back into the house and got a pack of their treats, and called his name and showed him the treats, he came running back up the stairs, boy was I relieved.
I do not know if there is a technique or not, just be careful when you open the door and make sure your cat is not near.
I think all cats try to get out when the door is open.
Where I used to live, we would let them go outside, because there was a fenced in yard. My older cat would find a nice place to nap, my younger cat wanted to explore, so we always had him on a long leash.

Keeping some treats handy by the door might be a good idea too! Glad to hear that you got him back inside safe and sound.

We used to have a cat named Petey that loved to try to get outside and there were a couple times he made it to the porch before he was grabbed and put back in the house, he was a very crazy cat, since he came from two crazy households one with a lot of dogs that tried to eat him,and one was my Granny and I do not blame him because I think I would go crazy living with her,and the only thing we could do was keep a close eye on him when we opened the door, and try to not keep it open very long at a time.

Both joyfulone and mcat have excellent ideas. I use the water bottle one myself and it works very good. I'll have to add the soda can/coin one to my arsenal just to mix things up. Also, don't dawdle when going out. Get all of your stuff ready, purse, shoes, coat, keys, etc., before you head for the door. If they see you hanging around the door, playing with the keys and tying your shoes, they know you're about to go out and they get ready to try to run out the door.

Yes, you are exactly right about having your things ready if I am to go outside. I am pretty good about it, but my visitors are not, and I am having to yell close the door because Buster is outside. It happened last weekend when my parents came down. They were going outside to the patio and he ran out. However, there was a dog barking outside and Buster ran right back inside. He was scared the, but it doesn't stop him from trying to get out the very next day.
I use a spray bottle for him and it works pretty good. He knows what it is and what it can do to him. It only works when I use it, and it does not seem to be a deterent. Its a work in progress I know and I just have to keep working with him.

Take a soda can and fill it with coins. Shake it whenever he comes near the door. Sooner or later he will learn not to try to go out. Make a big noise when you go out and come in. It's not that he doesn't like it living with you; it's just that cats are curious and he wants to know what's going on out there.

The best way to keep your cat from running out when you open your door is to have the cat in another room with a door where he cant get out to the main door way. We had a cat to do the same way and we had to do him that way for a few weeks then he got use to it and never tried to come out of the door again. Hope this helps you out!

My cats run to the front when it is opened they have not tried to run out it yet though but they run out the back door to the enclosed porch all of the time though they like to smell the things that are back there. I hope they never get outside they wouldn't know wha to do.
