When do you plan to buy Christmas gifts?

I know it is still a little too early for some... but here in the Philippines... it is common knowledge that the Christmas season begins during the "ber" months... and since it is already September... i can now hear some christmas music being played... some malls starting to display Christmas trees for sale... and Christmas lights can already be seen at night...
So... when do you plan to buy Christmas gifts... i think i will do it as early as September 15... every payday... i will make it a poing to by an item or two... i plan to give T-shirts this year... since i gave away money instead of gifts last year... and starting early with the Christmas shopping would certainly be a way to avoid the christmas rush... and would also be less financially stressful...
Will you start with your christmas shopping now... or would you rather wait till december?...

I always start my Christmas shopping in October but I might start it this month in September. getting a head start is a really great idea. I have bought my neice her birthday preasent for the 18th of September she turns six.At the same time it never hurts to get started ahead of time. this year has went by really fast that is for sure.

Hi aseretdd,
Hmmm...I am trying to imagine how exciting is this for everyone..I want to start shopping also little by little this time because I don't like to be stress by December...LOL! I will make a list and then try to plan what is best for a particular loved ones! Last year, I had my Sister who helped me so, this year, I will try to coordinate to her so that we will just come up with one gift to a relative so that also we can save, since it is very crisis this time! LOL!
Hmm..I am thinking to play Christmas song today..I miss the "pinoy" songs!

Yea...I am looking really for that, wish they have new songs for this year and I love also to listen to the old ones! ANyway, I agree with you, waiting for huge sales is very very ideal!
I remember before, I was even getting "ukay-ukay" items for some of our neighbors! It was affordable and a great quality too!

With the current world economic crisis... it will be wise to think of ways were we can save... this is why i am waiting for mall sales before i buy my gifts... and that usually starts during September... i hope you brought cd's of Filipino christmas songs... that will surely ease some of your homesickness...

I thought about buying gifts right after christmas... but i spent most of my money during new year and christmas... that even though the sales were quite tempting... i had no more money to use... so Christmas shopping for me always starts during September...

Gift wrapping is also fun... but when there is only one person doing it... it can be very stressful... i just buy those ready to use bags... the cheap ones of course... no point in using the expensive ones if they will just get torn apart during christmas...

Yeah, Christmas spirit are really here in our country, I also hear some Christmas musics in the malls and some people are starting to prepare their decorations and such. I think I'll started to buy gifts around October or November. I agree, that starting early with the Christmas shopping is practical and stress free. I am planning to do that around mid-October but for now, while waiting, I'll start to save money every payday.

I actually bought some items from multiply last February and the months after. half of our 13th month salary is given in May so I usually use some of that. When I see some items, I start buying. I always have a hard time buying gift for my guy cousins. This year I also don't know what to give to my couple cousins and uncles.Last year we gave pasta and and pesto. I wonder what we should give this year. Hmmm...
Not ton mention that I have more than 20 godchildren!!!! Sheesh! Mine alone! My husband have about 10! Good thing most of my godchildren are not in the country so there you go. LOL!

It is always nice to receive christmas gifts early... because if it is something that can be used or worn... they can be a part of ones clothing or accessory during Christmas day... i always do that... especially when i get something i really like...

Well, since next month we're going to Indo (now we live in Finland) and Singapore, if I find something nice there, I'll definitely buy it for X-mas gift. It'd be great if I can find more than one thing. But I don't have to buy too many gifts, so I don't have to be too frantic even if I try to find X-mas gifts near X-mas he he...

I usuallay would start in July but this year just now started. I have been watchign the DVD movies on sale for $5-$8 at target and Amazon.com. Picking up some of the classic movies and tv shows. My son is a John Wayne fan, my husband named him after John Wayne, so in previous years, I had collected all the movies on VHS, but with VHS on its way out, I have been watching for the sales to get them all on DVD. Have picked up several for $5 each.
But I am going with gift cards this year. My kids are hard to buy for, what they want, I can't afford and since their tastes and mine are so opposite, for the last 2 years I have gotten them gift cards to a store that they like but can't afford often -
for instance.. I get my daughter a $35 GC at Starbucks. She loves it but can't afford it so this way, I am able to get her exactly what she loves!
My son - loves the western wear store, so I get him one there.
Also, the fast foods - both are constantly on the run so to get them a GC to their fav place...just makes them think of me when they buy!
I think I am even going to get my GD one from her fav stores - Old Navy and The Pencil Store and a accessories store. She loves to shop and we are trying to teach her about spending nad saving and not over spending and all so I think this is a good way to teach her the value of money and making good choices, all the while covering christmas gift and getting her things she wants.

The Gift Certificate is a good idea... i plan to do that maybe next year... since my cousins are all teenagers... and i am sure they want to be able to get stuff that they really like... and that would also be an opportunity for them to just go to the mall and enjoy themselves...

That was the other reason I went with gift cards - my daughter loves to shop and our tastes are literally opposite. Yes, I could go buy her someting I don't like and know she'd love it, (and I mean that literally!) but since I dont like shopping that much and she loves it, if I give her a gift card I not only give her the gift of hte item, but the fun day of going shopping!

That is a good idea... i plan to make fruit salad on chirstmas... not too many because i am not expecting any visitors... but just in case... my daughter and i usually spend Christmas eve at my parents house... and christmas day at my in-laws... so no need for me to cook anything...

Actually, you have a good point starting on Christmas shopping now. I was so financially strapped last year, I went into debt at Christmas.
I did buy two Christmas gifts, although haven't started thinking about doing it purposefully. The local grocery store had all their summer stuff 75% off. I got a really cute bobble head frog for my daughter since she collects frogs.
And no, I like to do a little shoppign in December but am not one of those folks who love the crowds in the stores.

The bobble head reminded me of the one my father got for his van... but they were dogs... and my daughter loves them... seems like most of those who responded to this discussion are starting their christmas shopping early... just to avoid the rush in December...
Thanks for ther response...

Hello aseretdd,
I think you plan it right. If you start earlier, you won't be in a rush and it is hassle free, stress free and you can plan your shopping too. I read in bestre's discussion too that Christmas celebration starts early in the Philippines. There are certain things that I like about Christmas sale You know I love perfume and that's what I am going to buy first... People think about others and I think about myself!

Well, it is not a sin to think about what you like first... since we also need to love ourselves... i am not too crazy about perfumes... but i think i will buy myself a nice t-shirt with the ones i will give away this year...

I have already started picking up little things. I try to get it done gradually. You are right...financially it only makes sense to pick up a couple of things per week. Our family isn't real extravagant in the gift giving aspect of it all so that so that helps.

My family is also not extravagant... and my cousins, niece, and nephews will certainly appreciate small or big gifts... so it is wise to start accumulating the gifts early... for financial strategy and to avoid the rush in December...

oh my, i would really love to start buying gifts as of this moment. the problem is i still don't have a budget for it. September is the perfect month to buy gifts since there are sales all around the city. The malls are still not too crowded too. The best thing about it is if you shop in advance, you will still have enough time to shop if you are not able to find nice things to give as gifts.

I agree with you... a lot of malls start their mall wide sales during September... but there is nothing we can do if we have no money... in my case... i set aside some of my salary fo buy gifts... not expensive ones of course... just those that i can afford or within my budget...
