How sick do your kids have to be before you keep them home from school? My son woke up this morning with a stomach ache. I decided to let him stay home from school just in case. He does not have a fever, but it is after 4pm and he is still saying his stomach hurts. He never did throw up. have barely gotten him to do anything today and he will not eat anything. Do you let your kids stay home for a tummy ache or do you send them to school anyway? I would have gotten sent to school anyway when I was a kid.

I would ask him first if he feel like he is well enough to function, but if he looks miserable or in pain he will stay home anyway. I don't want him to go to school feeling bad. He more than likely will not focus in class if he is sick.I know because when I go to work sick I don't produce my best work.

My son has trouble concentrating as it is, so when he does not feel well it is about pointless to send him to school because he will not be learning anything anyway.

My kids have told me that they weren't feeling well, only to be bouncing off the walls by midmorning. Unless they are running a temperature or coughing uncontrollably, I send them to school, and I let them know that if they get to school and still don't feel well, they can always ask to see the nurse. That has really cut down on the "pretend" illnesses.

I have not seen him fake sick yet, but he is only 8 years old. He stayed home and payed around all day. He barely ate anything. Today he said his stomach still hurt a little bit, but he needed to go to school because he has a spelling test. He is excited about taking his spelling test because he always scores perfect on them.

I would say err on the side of caution, unless he has a history of getting 'schoolitis' on test days or something. Too often parents send sick children to school and they infect everyone around them. I used to teach preschool, and it was very frustrating and heartbreaking to see sick children mope around all day because their parents sent them when they were sick and all they really needed was to be at home resting. Here is an article I wrote on the topic with more specifics. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/610941/how_to_tell_if_your_child_is_too_sick.html?cat=5
