Have you ever moved out of state?

In about a month my family and I are moving about 200 miles. From one New England state to another. I've moved about 5 times in 35 years, once halfway across the US. That move was when I was a kid though, so it's different. This isn't as far as that move obviously, but as the mom now this will be much more work for me. I'm so overwhelmed every time I think of what needs to be done. I want to have a yard sale to get rid of some junk, but that means doing all that work & planning on top of packing. We're moving into a much smaller home, (but our family is smaller too, my eldest is an adult now & moving back out on his own) with much more property. I'm debating if I should build a shed to store some of the stuff at the new place, or just get rid of it. What's been your furthest move? And how did you deal with the stuff you had collected in your life? Did it all go with you? Did you get rid of it & regret it later?

I moved 1600 miles a little over 3 years ago, from Texas to Pa. I stored a lot at my mom and dad's, they have plenty of storage, gave some to my daughters, and what I brought with me fit into a Pontiac Sunfire. And it was packed! lol had enough room for me to drive lol, and a little bit of room in the front sit, like for a bottle of water lol. I did go back down a year later and went through a lot of the stuff and brought back a car load. I had had my mom ship me all my Christmas decorations, and a few other things. We are looking at moving next year, and I look around at all the stuff we had, and have accumulated since we've been together (you can collect a lot in 3 years lol). And dread the thought of packing lol. good luck with your move.

I moved from Philadelphia PA to Florida about 2000 miles. In preparing for the move, I moved three times in two months. I sold a lot of stuff before I left. I always keep stuff handed down from family and the kids special things. I gave some things away to family members who like me will keep them.

I moved from PA to Texas and then back to Pa then to Md then back to Pa and then to Kansas and then back to Pa. LOL!! I have moved so much it's not funny it's a big pain in the but when I have made big moves like that I do end up getting rid of somethings and I usually never regret it. LOL!! Have a nice move and a safe trip to your new surroundings.

Over how many years did those moves happen? Since moving out on my own 17 years ago, I've only lived in 3 homes. One for under a year, one for a decade & my current place for almost 7 years. I hate moving.

I've moved a lot, across the country, out of the country and back again and who knows where next. I don't buy expensive things because they get broken or "lost" in the move. All I need is my family and besides what works in one house never works in the next so if I don't need it, I sell it or give it away and shop at the next place. Anything I don't want to lose I store at a family members house (very old photos, etc). I don't think I have ever regretted getting rid of anything, it feels liberating to me like a fresh start.

Oh yes, I've moved to another state - a couple of times. My last move was three years ago when I moved from Iowa to south Texas. We opted to use UHaul. What a nightmare. LOL I'll hire a moving company next time for sure. We are now considering a move to northern Missouri soon. I think I'll sell the furniture and just take key pieces that I can't give up and just replace in my new town. We also do the garage sale and donate thing to get rid of excess junk before moving. Just remember donated items can be tax deductible if you choose that option. My only regret was this last move. We were rather rushed that time and had family helping. One rather large box had some items I wanted to keep. Unfortunately a family member took it to the dump with other items we were tossing out. So I lost some things I didn't want to lose.

Oh I can see how that would be upsetting. I hope it wasn't memento type stuff.

All my life i have stayed in the same place but shifted to different streets , just 5 years before we shifted to a house just opposite to the house which i was staying and now we have chosed a small house than ever and it was too difficult for us to get accomodated in this place as me and my brother grew our things have also grewn and it was very difficult for us at the begining my mom started covering all the less used things or rarely used things in a cover and wrapped it in a cardboard and kept in the higher shelf so that it is not kept down which will take most of the place and now it is looking good and now we can just survive in this small place

Hi eden ~ No, I have never moved out of state. In the 5 times I have moved, the biggest move would have to be when I moved from the Bay Area to Sacramento. It was a little over 100 miles. That was back when I was 10 years old. All my other moves have been around the Sacramento area. I don't recall what became of some of my stuff when moving. But then again the last time I moved was over 12 years ago, so I haven't even given it much thought. If you feel you might regret getting rid of some of your stuff maybe you should build a shed so you can store some of these things. You could always decide to sell them on a later date after you moved.

I have moved from one state to another. However I have moved from one country to another too. I have moved just twice till now as I have mentioned that's all. Getting settled and adjusting its a big pain Lolzzz... The worst part comes when you gotta pack up all the things in order to shift them. I really hated all that. But soon now I'll have to shift out of home once my job begins.

I was born in the small town located in South part of China,I've spent my Childhood here and moved to the city when I spent my six years high school time. After gratuating for university,I had my job and married in another city in South part of China,800km away from my high school times' city, which was my furthest move. For the stuff,I just took something necessary along with me and left the rest in my old city, thus no way to be regret as they're still in my mom's home.lol...For the future,I can not tell if I will have to move again for new job or something else.

I grew up as an army brat, so we moved quite a bit. As I got older, I have pretty much lived in the same place. But I did move from Iowa to California, and then back 2 years later. I think thats the farthest I have gone. It is a lot of work, having to pack everything, and bring everything that far. I put a lot of my stuff into storage, and just went through it when I moved back.

My mom was in the army, and I did one move with her (that was the 1 cross country move I mentioned) but I stayed with my grandmother during the times my mom did a lot of moving. The stuff you put in storage, did you end up parting with any of it when you went through it when you returned?

I was born in Kent and grew up there. I moved to a different part of it when I was 19 and I bought an old cottage. I moved fourteen years later to a new county called North Somerset. It was a move of more than 250 miles I think. I didn't know that I would have a second child and so my house is a bit small. I like to do clutter clearing to get my house tidy and well organized. I think you might like to clear the clutter or build a small shed. Good luck deciding what to do. I regretted getting rid of emotional clutter and I find it difficult to sort out paperwork as well as photos. I am a collector and sometimes I get too many things in my collections. I adore my collection of costume dolls from around the world but I have many forgotten things in my loft (attic).

Hi eden32, I moved from Ct. to Pa. about 13 years ago and took everything with me. I have moved a few times while in Pa to different towns and still took it all with me. Now my husband and I are looking to move again and this time to a house that may be a bit bigger than we have now. I am looking around this house wondering why I took it all with me in the first place, I have to pack it all up and move it again. This time we have acquired more things from my husband and his side of the family. I have been thinking about a yard sale too, but I am just afraid I will not be able to part with most of what I have. I have slowly over the years sold or gave away some items since my tastes and decor have changed, however I am a collector of collections and there are just so many things I do not want to give up. I am a pack rat in a sense but my things are not packed, they are out and about. I will most likely take it all with me and then wonder why I did THAT as I am unpacking it. ;) BTW, I miss New England and wish I could move back there.

Myhusband came from Washington state to Phoeinx arizona where he met me. I had come there from South Dakota. we moved to Calfornia just before President McKinley was assasinated and here we stay finally. The last time my son and I moved we had the living room full of boxes which are still there. we had moved from a bigger apartment to a smaller apartment.
