I know it has something to do with activity, but I don't think it's response count because sometimes it does not change. How does it work?

The star with a number that appears next to your names is a kind of rating when you reached your 100th post. 10 is the highest and 1 is the lowest. Right now mine is at 10 so I have a high ratings meaning I posted quality comments and discussions. And right now you have a 9, just keep posting quality post and you'll be able to reach that 10th star.
But don't be too cautious just enjoy posting and mylotting. There are a lot of people here that does not mind that, they just post whatever they want to post. Which I think is right, do whatever your heart tells you. Its more enlightening in that way and it always attract more responses. Happy mylotting sheepie

I think it something to do with your response. To be easily distinguish how many post you make. Maybe you notice it does not change because your post fails or it just didn't reflect directly. There are cases like that, I've read one here last night. Well, whatever it is, just keep lotting!

The number is show your total post that you ever done it. It will increase when you start a discussion and respond a discussion. From that you can see that how much post that you must do again to reach 200th post. In 200th post you will get a privilege using emoticons. At 100th post before you get a star on the left of your name. So I think the main function is only to show how much post you have done before.
Keep post
happy myLotting...
