I type about 65wpm. I took touch typing in high school and now I'm 54 and can still type well. You can find a free course on the internet if you're interested in touch typing. It comes in very handy, especially in places like this where you'd like to interact with as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time!

I just found this one and it has typing games that should help with increasing your speed. I bookmarked it cos I love to play games--I also write for pay and like to reward myself with a game when I finish a page, it keeps me motivated!

I'm a fairly fast typist though sometimes not as fast as my thoughts..LOL. I am able to type without looking at a keyboard though..the only time I don't and have to look is when I'm typing numbers...or if I'm trying to remember those special symbols to type out and which numbers to use like Option + 3 gives me £ the British pound symbol (have a mac computer so the system of codes is different)

I think you are one of the fastest here Pye. Just looking at you long topics make me think how much time you have to spend when you start new discussion.
It would take me at least 1/2 hour to start long topic like yours.
You are very fast.....
This mean you can finish your novel sooner than I start first chapter....

Believe me I sometimes amaze myself when I start long discussions as I don't realize HOW long they turn out until they are posted, and I'm thinking..yikes did I write all that?
As for one of my novels...I noticed I started typing it out back in May..but not consistently that is not everyday/night...but I'm up to 98 pages now..LOL

LOL! I am not boosting but I can type very fast - may be at the rate of 50-60 words per minutes. I know the proper form of typing and I type the matter without looking at the key board. It is kind of reflex action, which makes us type. You can also learn the proper form of typing, where all the fingers are used simultaneously. You need to search for a programme on the 'net' for 'typing' and hopefully you would find one, suitable to your needs. I can assure you that it will not take more than 15-20 days to learn the proper art of typing, rest will depend upon your regular practice, once you become completely aware of combination of key board keys with fingers. Best of luck and best wishes!!
How are you? (YOU appear to be away from many weeks??)

Hi Poly, you're doing better then me. I read slow, type slow and think.......let's not even go there. LOL! But I don't always look at the keys when I type. But then, when I look, let's just say, I'm glad FireFox has spell check. Have a good weekend my friend...

I have to look and it really slows me down. If I had only followed the rules and not looked durring typing class I be the better and much faster as well...being fast is one thing but fast with no mistakes is another...you might flip through a book on typing and maybe be able to pick up some pointers and practices that might help speed things up a bit. Other than memorization hand and finger placement position is important as well what finger tok which buttons. On a good day about 20 words a minute with 5 or so mistakes and my bad spelling doesnt do much to assist. Take care! :)

i don't know how fast i can type but no i don't always look at keyboard when i type. i don't read fast, i tend to read little by little to understand it and if there is a part i don't understand i will stop so it takes a lot longer for me to read than to write or speak. unless of course it's my own writing i would know it since it's all in my head.

Only time I really look at the keyboard is to make sure my hands are on the right keys when I start typing. Otherwise, I'm looking at what I'm typing on the screen. I can't watch my hands while typing or I mess up big time. I average 60 wpm w/o errors which I'm happy with.

I learned to type based on the home row keys while I was in high school. Much practice over the years has made me better and better.
There are some fun games online that you can play in order to improve you typing. If I was a good little mylotter I would go find them and provide you a link. But I have just one eye barely open, waiting for my sleep aid to kick in.
You should look into them, polachicago, they are actually pretty fun.

I can read fast, but I don't think fast on my feet. I type fast (what I consider fast at 90 words per minute)and usually don't have to look at the keyboard unless I need to type numbers or symbols. When I'm writing, however, I always do my initial drafts by hand. I'd probably save a lot of time if I could type directly onto the computer. I don't understand how college kids can take notes by typing directly on a computer. I think I'd absorb less of the lecture if I tried to do that.

When I was in college about about 8 yrs ago I went to a business college and had to take typing 1 Yep they still did it but it was called something like keyboarding or want not .. The whole clase was about typing you had to be able to type at least 40 per minute in order to pass this class. LOL!! Needless to say since I have left that class my typing speed has improve a tad so I can type about 45 words per minute now and I don't have to look at my hands or the keyboard when I type anymore it's jut auto pilot for my finger they remember where to go .. LOL!!!

Hi Polachicago, Years ago I passed all my Pitmans exams in typing so was very fast but as I don't type daily these days I think I am very rusty and do also have to look at the keyboard quite often. I think if I was to go back into a secretarial job though I would soon be back up to speed. I was an audio typist in a legal firm for a while and that was typing as fast as they spoke but don't really know how many words a minute that would be. Ellie :D

it is very neat just watching them type real fast, and their heads away from the keyboard. he can type without even looking, and it amazes me.

Fast enough that they had to use an hour glass. If I remember correctly the last time I was tested for my typing spell I did 17 word a minute. I really do not even know how I did that. Yes I have to look down at the keyboard. I have even taken typing classes back when I was in school. I just could not help it, no matter what I tried I had to look down at the keyboard. I felt very doltish, when others could type 40 and 50 words a minute. Oh well!

I majored in business in high school which included typing. I believe then I could type 50 or 60 words per. min.
http://www.typeonline.co.uk/typingspeed.php
I just found this online typing test and only got 38 wpm. with 3 mistakes. Dang, I thought I was faster than that. I did it with grandchildren distractions, I'll have to try it again later when they are in bed.
You can probably take a night course at your local high school, that would be the best way to learn to type without looking.
I can type without looking, everything but a couple of the numbers.

I"m a fast typer, but not completely accurate - unless I really have to - . I don't look at the keyboard, but sometimes that is not the best for me because every once in a while my brain flips back to the Portuguese keyboard which has the letters in different places even if it's the international one LOL
I have typed full paragraphs to notice that I am constantly typing the t instead of the a and things like that that make what I wrote unreadable :)
It also took me a while when I came to Canada until I got used to the letter in such different places in the keyboard. My first typing test was complete gibberish because I was nervous and my fingers kept going to the wrong places as if I was typing in a machine back home:)

Maybe a 245 WORD story, but it's not possible to type a 245 page story in 10 minutes, sorry, it's just not physically possible for a human to do so. ANd if it's a 245 word story in 10 minutes, that translates to 24.5 words per minute, which ain't exactly the speed of light.
