What makes an addict?

We are seeing different set of people daily - one set being addicts of something, say, alcohal,cigarette, drugs etc. and another set not being so. Why is it some people become addicts where others don't? Throw some light.

some people are more susceptible to becoming an addict because of their personality and family history.. i dont know why but some personalities can get addicted to anything fast and some dont to anything ever..
