Is wearing coloured contact lenses as a cosmetic harmful to our eyes?can all age groups wear such lenses? In my place the awareness about this is very low, so can anyone tell the demerits of coloured lenses?

Visit your optometrist (one that sells coloured contacts) if you want more information about coloured contacts -- if they sell them, they'll be the best candidates for reliable info. From what little I know as a consumer, if you buy the reliable brands for coloured contacts, there should be few problems. Freshlook is one that comes to mind.
However, there are several somewhat-dodgy cheaper (generally-Chinese) contacts around -- there's nothing wrong with those, but I have heard from some people that the pigment in the contacts may 'bleed'. Which, you can probably imagine, isn't a good thing. However, I personally use two such pairs and they're fine, so as long as you use them responsibly, clean them properly, and not wear them every day/wear them only for a few hours at a time (i.e. NOT from dawn to dusk), it should be fine. :)

Well, given the right conditions, I believe that wearing colored contact lenses are not really harmful. As long as you take good care of your lenses and use them appropriately then you shouldn't have much trouble. Be aware though that these colored contact lenses are not for those who are irresponsible because when used improperly they can blind you. And no, not all age groups can and should wear them. The very young and the very old should definitely not wear them for obvious reasons. I think the most appropriate age group to wear colored contact lenses are those from thirteen to forty five.
