How can I get my dog to play?

I have a dog that is almost 12. I know she's getting old but she doesn't want to play with anything. It's not that she can't move or run or anything like that. She can still do that. I just can't get her to chase anything like a ball or toy. She just looks at it like I'm crazy for expecting her to chase it. Do dogs do that when they are getting older? Maybe they're like people. I'm slowing down too as I'm getting older lol.

My dog is 12 too and for the last year or so he has decreased his interest in fetching and playing in general. He still enjoys walks though and loves swimming. Does yours still like to walk? Excercise is really good for them, it keeps them from getting old too fast so if you can find any form of excercise she likes try and get her to excercise some at least every other day. They do slow down when they get older but they will not slow down as much if they get regular excercise.

Animals are just like people and when they get older they don't have the energy they used to do . It is very possible that your dog really is just to tired to play and doesn't want to and would much prefer you to take the time to talk to her and pet her then for you to throw a ball for her to play with .
I wouldn't worry about it at all , I would really think it is because of her age but if you are really concerned you could try giving the vet a call and ask their advice .
Best of luck !!

I too have an older dog (13) and I'm just glad he can get up the porch steps every day. My younger dog (11) is a bit more frisky. She's a very happy dog in general. I don't know if maybe bringing treats into the mix would help but I haven't ever met a dog that didn't like to eat.
