Does anyone else get obscure 'similar discussions' after creating a topic? I mean similar discussions that are nowhere near similar to the discussions you've just posted

It's actually alright.You actually get that or see the "similar discussions" depending on the tag you created.And it's uncontrollable.It is how we tag our discussions.As long as my discussion is not being copied it is actually okay.So just try to be unique in selecting a tag for your discussion.
