What do you look for from your friends, and how do you know if their friendship is real or not?

Trust would be my first choice, and the rest to follow. Thank-you for your response.

I look for friends who stick by me through thick & thin. Who stick up for me if I have done something wrong. A good friend will come to bail you out of gaol. A great friend will be sitting next to you saying "Damn, that was fun" Love the avatar btw.

Understanding and respect. My best friend and I are opposites but we get along great because we respect each other's differences.

A friend never judges you. They are there for you when times are good to rejoice and there for you when you are down, to cry too. They are honest and loving and thoughtful.

This is really hard. I think no one can really know till that time comes that you really need a friend. I have a friend that lives in England for the past 8 years now. He was my best friend since 1986. All those years he was really there for me. And nowm that he is away he still is there for me. At least I still value his opinions. I have a "shoulder" to cry on. I have someone to share my happyness, my thoughts, my fears. This is what a friend is there for. And of course if you want to be a friend you should do the same.

Thank-you for your response remaster, and such a nice one at that! Sometimes you only need one person to give you the support you may need and if you have that, you have a true friend!

A friend is someone who will support you in bad times; always be honest with their opinions, even if they know you won'tlike what you have to say and who you can trust with your deepest darkest secrets. Genuine friends are very special and are to be treasured. Friendship is a two way street, where sometimes one is doing all the giving and the other taking. But that should apply both ways over a period of time, however if one person is doing all the taking then it is not a true friendship.

Friends are like television. Some are like PBS and always asking for money. Others are like the news, with sad tales to tell everyday, some are like that one station with the foreing language; you don't understand a word of it but you listen and watch anyway. And then there are the ones like the commercials, always changes, ever-so-annoying and only seem to be there when you are bored. But every once and a while you meet someone who's like a really good movie of the week or that one tv show you hardly ever get to see anymore because you're so busy. My point is hold on to the friends you care about and since we don't have a remote control to mute someone or just change the channel, pick your friends carefully

Good question. Coming from overseas and having no friends, which I think is hard as lot of people have their close knit and have no need for new friends. So I thought about your question, and the friends I have now, my how fortunate I am. I think they are a reflection in a way of yourself, your personality, strengths, beliefs etc. Like anything it takes a while to grow a true bond, as you go through things together you realise how important that person is to you in your life and you are grateful for them being there for you and you for them. They are the people that can give you the truth. Have I just babbled, yup!
