I have always wanted to become a writer but have lacked the courage to do so. I am now mustering it up and would love to know where and how to get your name known in the online writing community. My writing would not be limited to just articles as I also enjoy forums, blogs and poetry. I did enter a contest last year for a poem and it did wim a recognition prize...nothing monetary...
Any suggestions or tips on how to get this going...

I would suggest that you select a website where you can publish all your materials. If you alrady have some writing tucked away in your little notebook, it's time to pull them out of the closet and sent them in. I write mainly for Triond. I'm looking into publishing at Associated Content as well. I also write reviews for Review Stream. I was once like you wondering whether my articles would be accepted. The thing is you will never know until you try. Best thing is people are really generous with their compliments. So heads up and start publsihing!

It's available to anyone with a Paypal account. Minimum payout is 50 cents and is automatically transferred to Paypal every mid-month. If you have a few articles ready, you can try it out and see if you like it. Some poeple don't, they prefer Helium or AC. It's a matter of personal choice, I guess.

Hmm Sydney from Triond, paid2write from Helium, now we're just short of Kelly's (from Associated Content) reply in this thread :P
I have a list of 60+ freelance writing sites you can check out here at www.squidoo.com/writingfulltime
Like Sydney said, Triond's a good choice. And while Helium may lose out to Triond if you just look at the earnings for views generated, it does have lots of contests which help to boost a writer's earnings. The forum there is also a good place to get people to critique your writing. Some other good sites to check out are Constant Content and DailyArticle.

Nice lens. I gave it 5 stars and favorited it. Some of those sites I'd not heard of before. I'll have fun checking them all out. I write for a few of them but eHow has my vote for the most profitable; for me anyways. eHow is a regular job sized income for me.

ShowPup is right. I would definitely start with eHow. There is a great support network on eHow, the articles you write a re generally short and require no approval, and earnings can come quite quickly. I have over 160 articles on eHow and my earnings continue to grow every month, even when my attention is focussed elsewhere. The difference in earnings, for me, between eHow and sites like Xomba and Triond is hundreds of dollars every month.
If you're interested in starting to earn money online with eHow, please feel free to check out my blog. This is a series of artices designed to guide people to make money online with eHow. You'll also find LOTS of informative links on everything from choosing topics to increasing earnings.

Another site that is good for a confidence booster is Reviewstream. They publish almost everything and if your article is about hotels, travel or medicine you will paid two dollars per article. You can get write something and submit it, and they will let you know if approximately 3 to 4 days whether they will publish it or not.
I have seen some very good articles on there and some that are like a paragraph. They are probably paid at the bulk rate of forty cents.

There are tons of sites for writing articles and a lot of forums though making money with forums is a lot of work and a lot of posting. There are two tips that are important to keep in mind. While quality is very helpful it is quantity that makes the biggest difference. You need to write a lot of articles and a lot of pieces to make money doing it.
It is also important that you keep the faith. That may sound funny or even a little religious, but there comes a time when trying to make your dreams come true that it is hard to keep at it when it doesn't feel like you are getting anywhere. It is important that you keep working hard at it. It takes a lot of hard work but can be done.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that you should work with lots of sites so you aren't depending on something that might not be there tomorrow. Work hard on having a lot of different places to make money and building them up. It can happen.
For more information and tips you can check out my profile and the my money online blog (the link is in the profile). I have worked hard to get where I am at today. While I still don't make a living, I am growing my income each month.

I too love writing and I'm looking to become a published writer online! I think someone has already mentioned it, Triond! I am fairly new with them, about two weeks old and I'm in the process of writing something now. There is also Constant Content. One of my articles has already been published and that was with Review Stream. You can write about anything, submit articles, perhaps try your hand at a bit of creative writing! Anyway, this is the first article that I have had published. The good thing about this is, they pay you for publishing your article and also, if you get any reader votes then there is also payment for every vote you receive, about 10 cents per vote. For my article, bearing in mind it's my first time, I got paid 40 cents. You can get anything up to $2. The main point is, I have been published and for me, this is a very good starting point. Good luck with your writing. Check these places out. Andrew

You are from Canada. You can try Triond, Helium, squidoo etc. For your poetry, Triond fits well. If you need invitation to join Helium, I am most happy to do that for you. I am adding you as a friend. You can try to find Jobs from genuinejobs.com too.

congrats on winning a recognition prize. even it it's not monetary, it's at least still something. you may want to try writing on different writing sites as well as some sites are only more for informational articles while others have those poems etc. in that case, like many others, you'd be earning from different sites at one go.
for me, i write in hubpages, i don't think this has been mentioned earlier. but it's been some time since i last wrote as i have not had any inspiration. but in hubpages, people are there mainly because they love writing and not really for the money. there is a link on my profile if you do want to check it out. i also write for helium and associated content too.
of course when i say write, it's all those really easy stuff that i doubt people will want to look at but still, i like to write, it doesn't really matter whether people look at or not. if they do and generate even a little money for me, then good but if not, well at least i'm putting it somewhere where people can see it.

If your writing ability is too good and if you think that you can write an article on any subject that is given to you, there are many websites like ground report, associated contents etc. You can go there and submit your articles for publication. If they accept and publish you will also be able to share revenue there by increasing your on line earnings.I have tried but they do not accept my writing.

I would recommend you to start writing at HubPages or Squidoo. These two sites are are ready with online publishing tools. You can publish whatever information you love and share them with other readers. Other readers will give comments on your posts or articles if they have something to say. They are both great communities to socialize. I have a blog with my name JohnKhoo dot com. I have written a post on the difference between Squidoo and HubPages, you may have a visit to find out more when you're free.
Good Luck.

eHow. Period. If you're just starting out freelancing, eHow is a great first step. It allows you to generate income, without experience, at your own pace. This means you can be building your own eHow library of revenue (revenue that grows every month) while pursuing other projects and building a portfolio.
Beyond that, my best paying clients and jobs have come from eHow viewers who contacted me after reading my articles. So, on top of the handsome monthly paypals from eHow, I also make hundreds in unrelated projects I was hired for because of my ehow exposure.
I had a lot of obstacles to overcome in becoming a freelancer. A baby. A disability. Financial struggles. I really don't think I would ever have turned my dream of freelancing into a career without the easy, pressure-free, and supportive eHow environment.
If you're interested in eHow, I strongly recommend checking out BROKEN WORDS. It's a growing online series of instructions for making the most of your eHow experience. No experience, education, or financial investment required.
