Should you be afraid of your mother?

Something reminded me today of one of my favorite television quotes of all time. It's from the old television show Judging Amy. Amy, who is almost 40 in this show, says to her mother, "Mom, you scared me!" And her mother Maxine, who is almost in hysterics, responds, "Well, good! You're _supposed_ to be afraid of your mother. There are two things children are supposed to be afraid of - snakes and their mother! We've forgotten that!" I don't believe that kids should be afraid that their parents will hurt them, but I know that when I was growing up, we all had a healthy fear of 'I'm going to call your mother about this, young lady!' Do you think we've forgotten that kids should be afraid of disappointing their parents, at least a little bit?

I dont think that being afraid serves the purpose, one should learn to respect elders. If you are afraid as a child and that is why you listen to elders, then what would happen once you grow up|? Do you think that you will still listen to what elders say BUT if you respect them you would want to know why they asked us to do a certain thing in a certain manner. I think respect is greated than fear.

I agree that respect is greater than fear, but it's not a concept that very young children grasp at all. You can't make a three year old respect you. You can make one want to please you because they don't want you to speak to them sharply, or to look at them with disappointment. The respect grows as they learn to understand what you and those older than they have lived and learned before them.

I agree that their should be a 'healthy fear'. I know to keep myself in check around my parents. With younger children they should try and make their parents happy, but only because the parents are trying to prepare their children for life. As they get older they should begin to realize that they're only letting themselves down, which is similar to disappointing their parents in the beginning.

I completely agree with you on that. I know that it's very popular for parents to believe it's their job to keep their children happy - and has been for a while now - but children are most happy when they feel secure. They can't possibly feel secure when the parents allow them too much control. Part of our job as parents is to impose control until they learn how to control themselves. It's all part of growing up.

yes. according to me everyone should and has to be afraid of but hurting hteir mothers emotionally. not just afraid at the very thought of her. but about doing something noncomplementative, or nonacceptable to their mother which would will hurt and feel emotionally sick. Bo good, think good, and do good always. this keeps your mother all the more happy and none of us will have to be afraid of anything. mother is the only god every one has in this universe.

I donot agree to this the kid afraid of his mother because the mother is not only a friend ,guide , teacher and care taker of kid but also think that that her kid become the good and responsible citzen of socety . if the mother scold her child it is for the betterment of life of her kid. we should not forget the sacrifice of our mother . we cannot owe to her .she not only give us birth but also struggle of our life. instead of afraid of her we should tell the truth becase she is concerned with our bright future. we should not dis appiont our mother for sucess of life which lies in the feet of mother .
