i often notice in gasoline stations some signs "no smoking, turn off engines, turn off cellular phones, etc". however, as far as i can observe, passengers do not really turn cellular phones off and more often they even use their phones make a call or send a text message during gas-up. well, i do turn mine off because it was once reported that a blasting incident took place from this improper practice which resorted to the death of innocent passengers. how about you? do you really turn your cellular phones off when you are in gasoline stations?

i don't turn off my celphone while im at the gasoline station.
i don't believe that it will cause fire. id seen it in the mythbuster tv show. they proved that it is not true. radiation or the frequency of the celphone is too small to ignite the gasoline.

This was proven to be a load of rubbish on the TV show Myth Busters. They set up the experiment and rang the phone while he was pumping petrol and nothing happened. They did several different attempts to blow up there test dummy but I think in the end none of the ways they were trying worked.
I have seen a video on the internet where some man has had static charge and a spark ignited the man while he was filling up his car.

I watched a program on this where it was showing all the different cases where people either didn't shut their phones off or were talking on them and didn't realize how dangerous it could be , until I had watched the program , I had never noticed the signs at the gas stations . Just shortly before watching this program , I had gone some place with my niece and we had stopped at a gas station , it was closed for the night and I had went to make a call and she had freaked , when I had asked her what was wrong she had said " don't you realize you could blow us up " ? I drove some place else to make my call and it was that night or the next night that I had seen the program and was amazed that not only did I not know this but had never noticed the signs before .
In my defense , I had rarely ever gone for gas as my husband always does that , and I rarely use my cell phone when out but still was horrified that I could have hurt my nephew and my niece that night because of my ignorance .
I do turn my cell phone off when I go for gas all the time and I always make sure I have my vechile turned off as well .

The signs mean not to use them when you are actually pumping gas. If the station was closed, I'm guessing no one was even using a pump, so you were perfectly safe.

At first, after what I've seen in the video, I think it is in one of the states in the US as I remember it correctly, there is an accident that has been caused by cellular phone during a car is filling up in the gasoline station. The gas station exploded. I dunno what really the cause of it but some say that it is due to signal interuption of the mobile phone. But I do not turn off my cellphone while filling up in the gas station. I don't even switch off engine. I'm just way hard-headed at times.

actually, the chances of a cell phone causing gas vapor to explode is very small, since a phone does not create a spark or ignition source when in use. There is a show in the US called Mythbusters where they tried 8 ways to Sunday to make a cellphone cause a gas explosion, and they couldn't do it. Such and explosion is most easily caused by a person building up a static charge by getting back in the car when the gas is pumping and sliding back out (that builds the static electricity), when they go to touch the pump handle, the static causes a spark that ignites the gas vapor that has built up in the tank while filling. They were able to create this scenario very easily on the show.
So, worry less about the phones and just don't get back in your car to wait while it fills.

yeah. it already happened into our place. when it was reported, I am afraid now to use phone when I am in the gasoline station. I don't turn it off, but I am not using it.
there's this time that my co-passenger was using her mobile phone into the gasoline station (we're inside the tricycle at that time).. I was so afraid that I remind her not to use phone at the gasoline station.. then she apologized.

I avoid using at gas stations...but never turn it off...I have noticed the sign over there...on each station.
Unfortunately..here in my country...I haven't seen any one turn off , their cell phones...

Well... I don't use mine, but I do not turn it off because it would be very annoying. And actually I really don't understand why we have to turn them off. That's still a question for me, since many people said that I could blow the gas station up if I use my cell phone there.

I turn off my phone when the car's filling up specially when I am near the gas tank. Though there are times that I forgot to do so. But I really make sure not to text or call whenever I am in the gasoline station. I have also heard about that story in which a car blew up because someone was using his cellphone. Good thing though that gasoline attendants remind the passengers not to use their cellphones when they are filling up. Happy mylotting!

I never turn my cell phone off at the pump but i do try to leave it in the vehicle if I am pumping gas. I have answered a call and texted at the pump but not often. I really don't believe that a cell phone would be able to provide a spark to ignite the fumes from the gas pump. I think that all gas station fires are from static electricity and that's what ignites the fumes. an examples are when people sit back down in their car while the gas is pumping. This builds up static then they go to pull the nozzle out and cause the spark. another example is people rubbing against their car then discharging on the nozzle and igniting the gas.
so anyways I really don't believe that cell phones cause the gas station fires but other things that people do while talking on the phone. In my opinion all fires are started from some kind of discharge of static electricity.

I've seen that Mythbusters show, and before seeing it I would have turned off my phone when pulling in at the pumps.Despite the story being debunked,I still wouldn't use the phone while filling up..I'd be more concerned that the shoes I'd be wearing would allow a static electricity buildup-I've experienced static shocks touching the metal of my car before!

No, I don't turn it off, but I don't use it while at the pump either.
I remember a few months ago a woman had the gall to smoke while at the pump. This wasn't the first time I have seen someone do this (and it probably won't be the last). I didn't have the nerve to say it to the ones that did it before, but as I had just seen a news story about someone catching themselves, and I think their car, on fire from smoking at the pump, I figured I would speak up. I told the woman if she isn't careful she is going to blow herself up. She kind of laughed and told me that she knows she shouldn't do it and then went into her car while the pump filled up her car. She of course didn't blow herself or anybody up while there, but it did make me nervous to be on the opposite pump of her.

I also observed in all of the gasoline stations that there are signs was what you've mention above.. Well, before everytime I went to the gasoline station I usually turned off my phone but now I don't.. Sometimes, I forgot to turned off my phone or I just don't like to turned it off.. Then I've noticed also that there are some passengers don't turned off their phones instead they are still texting or using in listening music so from then on I don't turned off my cellphone anymore.. I sometimes texting while I'm in the gasoline station..

most of the times when i get near a gas station I just turn it off, its not that hard =). But then again, i havent seen any news about a cellphone making a gas station goin boom; I've heard about static electricity and sparks, but not from any electronical device.
And well about turning the car engine off, only when I need to do a full check to the car, then i'd turn it off and just relax outside ^^

Not really. But I make sure I won't use it near filling stations. Recently there was a program called mythbusters on discovery where they proved its false and usage of cell phones doesn't cause any kind of fire and blow up stations. However its always better to be on the safer side and avoid it.
