Do your kids help take care of THEIR pets?

My daughter BEGGED and BEGGED and BEGGED me to get her a Yorkie. It was to be a gift for birthday and Christmas, combined. I knew they were expensive, but we found a good deal on one and ended up getting him. I talked with my daughter (13 years old) many times prior to getting the Yorkie about the responsibilities that would be there with owning a dog. Of course, she acted as if she understood and would comply. I am a cat person.....not really that much into dogs because of their dependency on us humans for baths, playing, attention, etc......They are just like having another kid, in my opinion. Since having this puppy, she spends very little time with him and when she IS with him, it is usually because I have MADE her to do so. I don't feel that I should have to remind her all of the time that this is HER DOG and something she BEGGED FOR so long. I thought I made the right choice or rather, wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, but now, I constantly question myself and wonder why I could have been so stupid to believe that she would actually take care of him herself. As you can imagine, I have grown close to this puppy (although he still gets on my nerves from time to time), have put alot of money into him and can't imagine just getting rid of him. What about you? Did you think your child would be more reponsible with caring for a pet but now regret getting one for them? Please share!

I have had 5 children and they ALWAYS begged for pets,my daughters liked cats, sons liked dogs, and i can tell you up front that they want them but after they get them YOU (Mama) will do all the feeding, caring, bathing and caring for them..Of course the dog is attached to you ,he knows who takes care of him...It happens every time.I have never seen a kid yet that took care of a pet..Except for "Timmy on Lassie" and that was just a TV show ,not real life...

Slickcut, you have just affirmed what I already believed to be true. So now, all I can say is "HELP"!!!!! And I guess I should pat myself on the back and say "thanks alot", since I am the one who brought this whole thing on myself, huh?

My little ones are too young to beg for a put yet, but when my now 16 year old was then 13 wanted a bunny, I demanded she care for it. Other wise I would have found her a new home. Tell your daughter if she doesn't start being a responsible pet owner you will find someone else who will care for the dog properly. Yorkies are very sought after, you would have no problems finding a home for the dog.

Guess what? We just had the "if you don't take care of your dog, I am going to find him a new home" talk again. UGH! I am so sick and tired of her not taking responsibility for him! You just would not believe how hard she begged and begged for him! Now, she just looks at me like...."I've got stuff to do, so why don't YOU play with him???" Someone help me! I am about to scream!
